Adrien Payne down to two...

...and Michigan State is not one of them(although spartanmag says the "information may be a bit premature" but I am not getting my hopes up). Looks like Kentucky and and WV are the finalist and Kansas will still get their visit from him. All that was via a rivals article. I always figured he was kind of a long shot anyway. Either way this makes it down to Zeigler and Horford for that last spot and I wonder who MSU will get, if either(assuming not much of a chance on Leslie). And speaking of Leslie, is there any new word on him?

I just posted a FanShot on Payne. This report about only two schools was widely debunked. Payne just announced today via Scouts,Inc/ESPN that he is in fact down to four schools and Kansas has been cut. It’s MSU, WVU, Arizona, and Kentucky. Sure, lot’s of rumors that WVU and Kentucky lead but I don’t think it’s wrapped up. Why even announce that you’ve dropped Kansas if you’re actually done to two?

MSU shot is still legit.

Floating like a turd in the punchbowl. For everything said about Payne, it’s nearly impossible to get solid, confirmed information, even about whether there is or isn’t a Friday press conference.

Rumors

Not-so-favorable rumor here: KY and WV as the final two. (HT: Dylan)

Really hard to see a one-and-done-type big man fitting in at MSU at this point, with Roe/Green/Nix/Sherman all in the fold for next season.

rumors, schmumors

This has been talked to death in a lot of circles. The assertion that it’s UK and WVU is widespread and they’ve been discussed as front runners forever. Around the time Payne hit Morgantown, a WV newspaper said it was down to two (with NO sourcing for this) and pushed the story further. Then Payne’s coach debunked it. Still, you hear “pundits agree,” “common knowledge is,” “word is,” and it’s almost always about UK and WVU having it down to two.

My response is this – the Payne camp is incredibly tight-lipped. I think all this UK/WVU talk is just numerous bloggers repeating each other’s speculation until no one remembers that it’s based on ZERO sourced (on or even off the record) comments from the Payne camp. It becomes accepted as common sense by repetition not accuracy. “Word is,” “word is” ad nauseum but no one has any backing for it. Not saying he picks MSU but I think the idea that’s it a done deal to UK or WVU is pretty baseless if you like actual sources and not speculation.

So, there’s stories out there that Payne was on campus for the Iowa game this weekend, even going to the Breslin with his coach in an MSU sweatshirt. Now, not saying that’s true, however, the anonymous posters willing to claim they saw or were told that Payne was at MSU (including people I’d trust on the Scout free board) are already far closer to tangible “evidence” than anyone has been able to show me for putting UK and WVU in the lead. So, take my analysis for what it’s worth.

Lastly (can you see I spend waaaaaaayyy too much time on this), Payne dropped Kansas days ago. This particular twitter isn’t adding any new or breaking information. In fact, it shows that he’s actually behind and just another person parroting the party line. I would say it means nothing.

Honestly, after following this to the point of a sickness, if I had $100 to bet, I’d put 60 on MSU, 20 on UK, 20 on WVU, and take my chances that Arizona is out. That’s how I’d divide my money to minimize risk. From all I’ve picked up from reading, I honestly think he’s coming.

If he was really in E.L. last weekend,

I guess it’d be a good sign he’s (apparently) announcing this week.

Also: Recruiting is creepy.

True, so true. It’s like any other creepy illness. It’s starts slow; little things, no big deal. Then you find yourself bleary-eyed, googling “Adreian Payne” at 3am. Not that I’ve done that, of course.

I can proudly say this – I have no high school basketball players I don’t know as friends on Facebook. Now that is CREEEEEEPYYYYY!!!!

and, Kj,

I’m probably underestimating the value of Raymar Morgan (this year will decide that) but I believe next year’s team is looking almost better than this year’s team on paper (especially if Lucas stays). I think Payne elevates that team to “scary.”

Fair chance

I had a feeling, from a Jayhawk standpoint, that he was unlikely to pick Kansas. I believe that that may still land one key PF/C, as 2010 is standing to be a major class from them (targeting Knight, Barnes, Selby, etc.), but with a number of young bigs already a school like MSU would have far more minutes.

I’d much rather see the Spartans land him than Kentucky, though.

Here is to hoping my original post here is all wrong

IF and thats a big IF he commits to MSU does that mean zeigler is out??? Maybe waiting till after 6 is a good idea until we try to answer that question…
