*Attempt at counter-schadenfreude: The head coach of Mr. Cook's team is now sporting a career record of 3-9 in Big Ten play.  Our guy is 12-9.  Does that help?  No?  Nuts.

Brian Cook

…should console himself this week with a thoughtful analysis of when he expects their spread offense guru will have a conference winning percentage that eclipses our dearly-departed spread guru at a comparable point in their Big Ten careers. Maybe do a contest or something:

“Can Rich Rod catch John L. Smith before the point where Sparty decided they’d had enough and fired him?”

Maybe offer a set of cowboy boots to the winner.

Right now, halfway through his second season, John L. Smith was 8-4 in Big Ten play — his high water mark, to be sure. As noted, Rodriguez is 3-9.

John L. didn’t slip under .500 for good until the second to last Big Ten game of his third season. (But then won only one conference game the final year.)

The finish line is 12-20. As soon as he can get 10 more wins, Rich Rod is in the clear.

I think realistically, he COULD catch up by October of 2011 — the final season. But that’s assuming a 2-2 finish to this year, a 4-4 mark next year and then a big 4-0 breakout to start off 2011 (the final season of the contest.)

Anything less and it’s going to be a hilariously close finish.

For the record, I actually liked TOC’s post a lot. Just because I spotlight something doesn’t mean it’s dumb or mockable, it just has a lot of pain in it. Or it’s clever, like the stuff in the comments.

Usually it’s dumb or mockable, sure, but not always. I don’t think I launched any broadsides at MSU in the post, just attempted to relate what seems like a relevant characteristic of the program.

I like this blog and know a lot of State fans and tell them to check it out when they ask if there’s a good MSU blog out there, OK? OK. I even like the RCMB quite a bit. As message boards go it’s extremely funny.

Don’t tell anyone that last bit.

Yeah

I realize you’re an equal-opportunity schadenfreuder. And we’re certainly very appreciative of the support you’ve shown for the site.

But once in a while we have to release our inner RCMBer (and, if ever there were a week for that, it’s this one). You may have been confused by the lack of standard RCMB jargon. Allow we to translate:

DickRod couldn’t win a championship for those scUMbags if he were playing in the Ann Arbor (Whore!) Women’s Flag Football League, LOLOL!

RCMB?

What does this acronym mean?

Red Cedar Message Board

It’s the forums over at spartantailgate.com.

I stay away from that particular forum; it makes IQ points flake off my head like dandruff. YMMV.

RCMB

Good for a laugh, bad for any intelligent discussion. The recruiting boards are good if you’re a cheap son of a gun like me.

Just to be clear...

I wasn’t flaming Brian … just attempting my own snarky counter-schadenfreude. But it was late at night and I was typing fast, so I forgot to put in the silly smiley faces and perhaps did not convey enough mirth and make clear there was no malice intent.

But it would still be a funny contest. :-)

By the way

I absolutely love the updated football schedule.

Brian Cook seems...

….like a lot of things, but I’m really surprised that doesn’t get Pete’s Vonnegut jokes appears to be one of them. I thought everyone read/had to read “Slaughterhouse Five”?

Or am I falling into a double secret sarchasm?

Every MSU football fans knows what “So it goes” means emotionally, even if they don’t know the reference.

I think he gets it.

I'm pretty sure he got it.

I didn’t really take offense to anything Brian said, and I took his commentary as a compliment. I can see how it might have been a bit confusing at first, and if I had to do it again, I might make the times relate to the games more clearer. But as we know all too painfully, hindsight’s 20/20.

by Pete Rossman on Oct 27, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

This was...

…why I thought he didn’t get it.

From the Sporting Blog:
“The article’s conceit is a little confusing, but if you can get over the time shifts, it’s actually an excellent insight into the psyche of Michigan State’s particular fanbase.”

I guess that’s ambiguous about literary references, but it is a good point about us (or at least me) as MSU fans. We’ve had enough up and downs since I started following MSU football in the late 80s for several fanbases. I think it builds character.

Maybe certain other fanbases will build a little of that character, for their own good, of course.

I don’t see why anyone would take offense at Cook’s posting. It was pretty gentle ribbing and it was true.

To close this loop

I didn’t take offense to Brian’s post. My comments in the post were an attempt at comic relief—which apparently fell a bit flat.

Exhibit P as to why I do best to stick to statistical scatterplots.
