THE RISING: MICHIGAN STATE 26, MICHIGAN 20, OT

(Photo Courtesy of Rashaun Rucker, Detroit Free Press)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. That's all I have to say about that. This looked to be a mirror image of 2004, where Michigan scored two late touchdowns and pulled out a win in OT. The same event was about to occur here, except for one crucial third down play: Danny Fortener jumped a route and Chris L. Rucker plucked the ball out of thin air. From there, it was one heart-rending missed pitch, one decent pass, and one awe-inspiring Larry Caper run to victory.
Forget all of this team's flaws tonight. It's time to party. We'll go more in depth later, but for now get off the internet, AND CELEBRATE!

Wishful Thinking
RichRod is going to be around for a long time at UM.
Its great to see MSU get a hard earned W.

Says the guy whose team called for a flip pitch with a wet ball on first down from the 25 needing only a FG from one of the best kickers in college football to win. Jesus, if there was ever a time for Dantonio’s old caveman football approach, that was it.
Rodriguez isn’t going anywhere, and to think he’s a below average coach is, well, something only a blind State homer could think. Not even the OSU fans think that. (And before you bring up the fake punt that was a bad read by the punter, not a called fake).
Fun game. Your d-line completely owned most of this game, and Cousins killed us with his legs, which is something probably no one ever thought they’d be saying. Congrats on the win. And enjoy possession of Paul for one more year before we take him back :)

Saying Rodriguez is a bad coach...
… is just plain being out of things to say. Extensive track record shows otherwise. Besides, isn’t it much better for us as State fans to think that we will have the kind of team that beats other well-coached and talented teams? Isn’t that better than winning because the other guy is supposedly dumb?
For this season, any kind of win was good enough to avoid 1-4.
"Hes a below average coach anyway."
Uh, no.

The guy...
….can coach.
It’s like chanting “Overrated” after you beat a higher ranked team.
Better to chant “Not an upset.”

I'll take it.
But knock off that “below average coach” stuff. UM made the adjustments and damn near pulled out the last gasp victory. When UM gets more talent to suit RichRod’s system (especially on defense), look out.
Too many elements of SOS today for my liking. Penalties galore, turnovers, blowing a 4th Q lead. I am happy with the win but we have very little room to run our mouths.
I look forward to the day when an MSU win is a good but businesslike win over a rival.

Co-signed on all points
The good news is that we were good enough to overcome all those things today.
Stat of the day: 10 carries for 23 yards for Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown.

It doesn’t bother me as much because some of those penalties were just plain bad calls. Jenrette’s hit, and Forcier’s “helmet to helmet” call were both good plays. But hey, it’s Michigan, and that just comes with playing the winningest program of the late 1800s. The interceptions were Kirk getting hit while throwing, but blowing the lead….that was disturbing. I guess I have to say that we could’ve folded then, but didn’t, which isn’t what the SOS would do.
Any update on Cousins? I mean, I’m assuming that his leg must have been really bothering him, because I really don’t believe that after Cousins’ play in the game that Dantonio really would have thought that Nichol was the guy to go with in OT. Did Dantonio say anything about it in the postgame presser?

Scary game
It was pretty much dominated by the Spartans, but they nearly found a way to lose it. Of course, there’s an asterisk there because in past years, we would have actually lost.
Kudos to the players for rallying back and finally finishing off the team, but the execution really needs to be refined. We outplayed Michigan pretty terribly, but turnovers and penalties once again made a game a lot closer then it had any right being.
Here’s to hoping that crap gets identified and purged for the rest of the season.
Beautiful win.
Methodical domination for 3+ quarters followed by the clutch plays when it was all on the line.
MOST ENJOYABLE HEART ATTACK EVER

2005 Game more apt...
2005, Michigan came in to Spartan Stadium unranked and 2-2 after losing to Notre Dame and Wisconsin. They were on their way to a 7-4 regular season and ABSOLUTELY had to have that win to save a winning season.
Michigan State was 4-0, and ranked after beating Notre Dame and a bunch of nobodies. It APPEARED that they were on the way to a decent year, but as it turned out the early sked was weaker than it appeared. We ended up 5-6.
Had we beaten Michigan that day, rather than lose in overtime due to HISTORICALLY awful FG kicking, then both teams would have been 6-6 and we may have gon to a bowl game. (And John L. Smith would probably have hung on for another season.)
Instead, Michigan got the season saving win in overtime that they absolutely had to have. Today, just about the whole story was reversed.
Rich Rod isnt a great coach......
……I really think that michigan would be happier with Les Miles……Hes a much better coach in my opinion……I just dont think hes that good so I will continue ro say hes below average……I have that right.
Ok........
……..you……do have……….that right…………………………………..congrats?…………………………..
…………………. ……………….. ……
…………………………………………………………
Yes, you do have the right to make yourself a laughingstock
Michigan might be happier with Les Miles. But the guy they got is not a bad coach. I’d put him well above average, in fact. West Virginia had one conference title in 33 years prior to his arrival; they won four in his seven years. If you’re judging him simply by last year, keep in mind that with the talent available to them last year, Michigan was going to have a Yakety Sax year no matter who the coach was.
Not me.....
…….Rememebr when we tried to run this offense in the big 10 with JOhn L Smith…..Didnt work……I dont think it will work in the Big 10…..maybe in the Big East but not the Bog 10.

The problems in the JLS era had little to do with trying to run a spread offense and everything to do with taking bonehead penalties at the most inopportune times, switching to the prevent defense (and prevent offense) way too early in the game (a problem that still exists), and having a secondary that regularly got roasted extra-crispy.
RichRod and Les Miles
RichRod is in fact a very good coach. Look at what he was able to accomplish at that hotbed of talent, West Virginia. After an initial 3-8 campaign (time needed to install his crazy ninja offense), he went 57-18. 57-18! We should be so lucky to be as “below average”.
And yes, there are some elements of the Michigan fanbase that would be happier with Les Miles. Those same elements would be unhappy if Michigan brought in Urban Meier or Bob Stoops, because a) they’re not Michigan men, and b) their offenses are “just too radical”.
The whole 'Michigan man' premise is comically stupid and obscenely elitist
“If someone doesn’t graduate from Michigan, they’re not intelligent or charismatic or hardy or witty enough to coach Michigan!”
You’ll still find droves of UM alums that believe Rodriguez is not the man for the job.
Exactly......
………He just rubs me the wrong way…….did you see his press confence yesterday……He thinks hes like a big shot…..Dont like him……never have and never will.

Now, see, that's fair.
You are entirely welcome to view his personality as grating. Lord knows UM fans view Dantonio the same way.
I'd say the jury is still out on RichRod
His resume at WV was impressive, but a lot of coaches have impressive track records at multiple schools and then get somewhere where they just don’t click (JLS is one such example). I’m not saying RichRod is going to flame out by any means but he’ll have to put together a couple of good seasons before the jury is completely in.
This is a young Michigan team with a really bad D. They are much better than last year and as long as they continue to improve he’ll stick around.
On the game – fantastic finish, but why oh why do we have to make everything so difficult? We were up by 2 TDs and went into clock burning mode with like 8 minutes left in the game. That is way too early to sit on a 2 score lead.
End of the game
Well, we did go for it on 4th down to try to ice the game with 5 minutes left.
