Linking Laconically is learning how to rush the QB
Make sense to give Dion Sims a look at defensive end given the glut of tight ends.
Marcus Hyde to start.
On account of his "aggressive" run toward the end zone Saturday.
Going for 3-0 in post-Michigan games under Mark Dantonio.
Don't beat yourself up over it, Tate.
Yes, they do.
Gonzaga blogger concerned about bringing young team in to Breslin so early in the season.
Can we go big against Texas and UNC?
Subscriber-only, but the headline sounds positive.
"Young" and "middle of the pack" are the two main descriptors for MSU.
In the Corners agrees about the "middle of the pack" thing.

I still think MSU trails Kentucky and West Virginia for Payne but he’d be a great addition and take the 2010 class up a whole level.
FYI, he has officials remaining for WVU, Kansas, and Arizona. The idea seems to be to visit Kansas last for Halloween, decide, and sign early.

Crap
That really sucks about Jenrette. He was really improving as he played this year. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

Recruiting Rankings
Yes, recruiting rankings do matter, but the chart he created isn’t a 100% accurate.
The problem with recruiting rankings is that they are not ever adjusted. So, Michigan last year gets credit for 5 Star Ryan Mallet and 4 Star Justin Boren. Neither of whom were on the team.
Looking at Michigan State, this year’s Seniors (signed in 2006) are supposed to be DE Ervin Baldwin, DT J’Michael Deane, QB Connor Dixon, DE Patrick Rigan, DB Ken Tinney, DB Nehemiah Warrick, and WRs Devin Thomas and T.J. Williams.
Outside of Devin Thomas, I have never heard of any of them.

For real?
Come on- Baldwin was half of our fantastic pass rush in 2007! Warrick delivered that KO hit to Wisconsin’s Kyle Jefferson in Madison that year!

Yup, no idea who they are
I really didn’t start following college football that close until last year.
CPT Hoolie posted in another thread that Baldwin was a JUCO transfer, so he wouldn’t be here this year, unlike what I indicated above. He still would count toward the overall rating being used this year in that analysis.

Fair point on recruiting rankings
Warrick was also a JUCO who was a two-year starter at SS.
John L. lived by the JUCO, and he did bring in some good players that way. (Baldwin, Domato Peko, Devin Thomas) Coach D has only signed one JUCO to a scholarship, now-senior DT Michael Jordan, who contributed some last year, but hasn’t seen much time in 2009.
J’Michael Deane was in the mix to start on the o-line this year, but got hurt in camp. Connor Dixon was a dual threat style guy who was the backup QB in 2007 and then transferred to I-AA Duquesne. T.J. Williams was the best WR in 2006, but got in trouble off the field and played only some in 2007 at CB. Then, was academically ineligible for the Champs Sports Bowl and got the boot. Found a home at Valdosta State. Not sure on Rigan and Tinney.

JUCOs = Death
Recruiting JUCOs is a feast and famine prospect for college football teams.
I think Bill Snyder did a lot of that at K State and his program would dominate one year and die the next. The turnover of players is just too significant for a program to handle.
One year a kid learns the system, the next year he has a great season, then he’s gone. A lot different than bringing in someone, redshirt or not, develop for two years then play for two/three years.

Don't forget the Sackmaster...
Jonal St.-Dic!
JUCO transfers can occasionally serve as a quick fix to plug holes. It’s the closest thing to free agency in college football.

In 2007...
…our starting D-line was three JUCOs (Baldwin, St. Dic, Ogembi Nwagbuo) and one four-year recruit, Justin Kershaw. Not an ideal situation for the program, but we sure got some good pressure on QBs that year.
It’s possible to bring in a talented few, like Saban did, without doing it too much and hurting the team. Too many, though, and DrDetroit is right.
