Game Thread: Michigan State vs. Purdue

Michigan St. Spartans at Purdue Boilermakers, Nov 14, 2009 11:00 AM CST

5-5.

You need a "6" in front of the hyphen to extend your season into December.

Can they get there today?

Go Green.

Just feels good to get a win. Go State.

(Whew!)

I'm going throw this line out again because I enjoy it so much:

Hopefully, Cousins can limit his touchdown passes and keep Keith Nichol on the sidelines today.

Nice to be tied

Given that they’ve looked way better than us so far, outside of the fumble.

Fumbles even now

The rest of the equation not working in our favor.

Pass defense appears to be extra porous today.

Hey, a goal line TD!

Don’t see those every week!

by AdmiralAkbar on Nov 14, 2009 11:55 AM CST reply actions

that was exactly what we needed

to keep this game from getting out of hand

by Arro on Nov 14, 2009 11:56 AM CST reply actions

Play action pass to Hawken on the goaline for a touchdown!?! Whaha, huh? Eghgh?

Sorry, I can’t process this.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 11:56 AM CST reply actions

Whoa, I apparently do not understand the difference between “running into the kicker” and “roughing the kicker” at all. So, when one player sweeps low and takes the kicker out and another flies on top of him in a block attempt, that’s “running into?” Okay…

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 12:11 PM CST reply actions

3 yard out on 3rd and 7

Vintage MSU playcalling right there

We need some happy thoughts

The MSU hockey team. picked to be middle of the pack and have come out strong this year. Up to 13 in the polls. Justr beat number 6 UM at UM after getting swept by UM for the first time ever last year.

What has to happen for our defense to get better?

More experience? New recruits? Coaching changes?

Week after week, there are basic mistakes made. Guys wide open, missed assignments, poor tackling… and this is against people like Minn, CMU, Purdue. These are not great teams. What has to change for next year at this point to get us back to “average”?

Halftime stats

Purdue’s outgained us 266-174.

MSU only 1-6 on 3rd downs.

Cousins: 7-18, 110 yards, TD.

Elliot: 19-26, 180 yards, TD.

Could be down more. QB numbers need to reverse themselves in the 2nd half.

8 tackles (7 solo?) for Trenton Robinson. Only 3 for Jones.

Adjustments

Since we don’t make any on defense, what can we do on offense? The run looks like it’s there and Purdue has the worst run D in the conference. Maybe that will open things up as the appear to be playing it pretty tight in coverage.

"When does the whistle blow?"

“Doesn’t matter.”

Really, the official’s whistle doesn’t matter any more? Thanks for that very well-informed color commentary.

Associated commentary
that’s dantonio standing outside the locker room at the end of halftime. presumably a players-only meeting.

Note that the visitors' locker room looks like a freaking maintenance shed.

Yeah

Talking about, say, some defensive adjustments might have been a better use of the time.

Secret plan

By getting no pressure up front, covering no one downfield and pretending to be unable to tackle we are attempting to get Purdue to lapse into indecisiveness and fail to call any plays.

Watching Caper,

I often get the sense that he’s a split second from making a lot of big plays…like, just a tiny bit too slow to decide…I think he’s going to be amazing next year.

by nickexperience on Nov 14, 2009 1:30 PM CST reply actions

Caper "near highlight" reel

He knows it, too. You could do a funny compilation video of Larry Caper sitting on the ground smacking the ball between his hands in frustration. You’d probably have at least a dozen clips to use from this season.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 1:32 PM CST up reply actions

Would be lovely to force a turnover at some point here

(Not counting the fumble on the first play of the game as a “forced” turnover.)

by KJ@theonlycolors on Nov 14, 2009 1:35 PM CST reply actions

Force a turnover? I’d settle for forcing a punt. Heck, I’ll take a field goal.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Tolzien, Weber, now Elliott

We can turn anyone into Joe Montana.

by Con-T on Nov 14, 2009 1:41 PM CST reply actions

Just for reference, today (against defensive powerhouse South Dakota State) Adam Weber has thrown for about 80 yards, 0 TD and 1 INT.

So,

Really, once he gets his conditioning under control, Derrick Nix is going to be a monster.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 1:44 PM CST reply actions

Um...

Does that mean Purdue gets the ball back?

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

Whew

Gordon was on a wideout again, but Elliott never looked that way.

by Con-T on Nov 14, 2009 1:50 PM CST reply actions

We finally get pressure on Elliott

and he escapes for an 8-yard gain.

Hey cool, another offsides call on a D lineman.

"It's a trap!"

by AdmiralAkbar on Nov 14, 2009 1:53 PM CST reply actions

Please, try the kick

Because they will convert on 4th down.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Huge Block!

I’ll take that in lieu of the turnover I asked for.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Nov 14, 2009 1:55 PM CST reply actions

Is it wrong to hope for a quick Purdue score here?

I think it’s really just embracing reality. Is our D really going to stop them?

Or Keshawn

That works, too.

Hey, we held them to a FG!

And Martin just took the kick inside the 10.

by SpartanDan on Nov 14, 2009 2:11 PM CST reply actions

Need the TD

Way too much time left on the clock for Elliott.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Nov 14, 2009 2:15 PM CST reply actions

Oh, c’mon, we have this! When has the MSU defense failed in this situation?

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 2:17 PM CST up reply actions

Argh! I was hoping Cousins had something.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 2:16 PM CST reply actions

At least it's a 3-pt lead, not 4

Four would bring out the prevent. Even Dantonio isn’t dumb enough to run the prevent when a FG matters.

by SpartanDan on Nov 14, 2009 2:17 PM CST reply actions

Beautiful D, Rucker.

by SpartanDan on Nov 14, 2009 2:21 PM CST reply actions

Our DL looks either gassed or bored.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 14, 2009 2:21 PM CST reply actions

3-man rushes on those last few plays

No time to adjust, presumably. Need to mix it up again.

Good timeout call.

Who?

I was so excited I didn’t even catch who got the sack. Answer?

Bowl game!

Wow… terrible D, but we pulled it out.

Thank God.
