Misery is Right

I’m drowning my sorrows right now.

I'm starting to think

our defense isn’t good.

Ha ha ha

Oh my did that make me laugh.

by DrDetroit on Nov 21, 2009 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Sigh

I was only able to see from halfway through the third quarter on. I’m thinking, ‘hey, only down seven, at least we’re not down by 35 or something.’ Then, before the couch cushion even got warmed up, we were down by 35 or something after watching our blooper reel of a defense try to best itself drive after drive, following consecutive Cousins picks. I finally gave up and did a puzzle with my three year-old.

Holy hell, that was awful.

You probably don't want to hear from a Penn Stater right now but

FWIW, when the regular season ends I think you’ll end up being one of the best .500 teams in the country and most likely cruise in your bowl game, as long as you get a fair matchup. When our offense gets in that “put up a shit ton of points randomly after struggling for the entire first half mode” it’s hard for a lot teams to stop. Plus, at least you guys always have basketball season.

by PSUisMyHeart on Nov 21, 2009 8:25 PM CST reply actions

That may be hard to stop

But most teams at least make a token effort at doing so. At least one of the TD catches was so wide open that the guy could probably have started doing the Russian squat-dance at the 20 yard line and still made it in before he got tackled.

Really?

Why is there such positive thoughts on Dantonio after another beat-down in a big game? I think we are all so exited about beating scUM two years in a row that we don’t see the mediocrity that is so obvious. i came into this game thinking we were making the next step. I thought we had all the momentum going into halftime and then that…..it made me sick. Seriously State, let’s not assume Dantonio is the right guy because I don’t see it. Yeahh 6-6!?!

by Dantonio critic on Nov 21, 2009 8:27 PM CST reply actions

Really?

Yes, it’s a disappointing season with some indefensible losses to CMU & Minnesota. But I’ll take three bowls in three years because that’s consistency and stability that have not been present for a long time in East Lansing. Step back and enjoy the big picture. And a beer or three.

Still There

Dantonio is still building his program. He can still do a great job at MSU.

He just needs to get a better defensive coordinator.

I went to Sonic

And got a burger, a corn dog, a shake, onion rings, tator tots, and another corn dog. It helped. It also gave me a lot of time to think about adjectives to describe our defense, and specifically our secondary.

Putrid. Awful. Atrocious. Horrendous. Porous. I tried to think of an adjective that meant “like a wet paper bag”, but all I could think of was “wet paper bag-esque”.

friable?

friable |ˈfrīəbəl|
adjective
easily crumbled : the soil was friable between her fingers.

I've got it!

It’s so bad it can only be referred to as Narduzzi!

by DrDetroit on Nov 21, 2009 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry, we left him in East Lansing in 2007

At least you got to meet Kevin Newsome.

I’m not gonna brag about winning the Land Grant Trophy, because it’s a freaking piece of s***.

13-4?

I can’t see bragging about winning something that appears to be owned by Penn State.

Quarterbacks who threw for at least 290 yards against MSU this year

Dan LeFevour, Jimmy Clausen, Mike Kafka, Adam Weber, Joey Elliott, Daryll Clark.

Note the list doesn’t include the shredding given the secondary by Scott Tolzien who took his foot off the gas after getting a big lead.

by Con-T on Nov 21, 2009 9:18 PM CST reply actions

Also, Scott Mitchell, Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell, etc.

I think.

I think Heath Schuler went for 3 TDs, too.

We did shut down Tim Hiller

And I heard he’s going to get drafted by the NFL.

So that’s something.

Well. . .

Northern Illinois shut him down too. The phrase about blind sows and acorns comes to mind here. . .

Cute

I’m going to go back to the basketball thread now and recall what it feels like to root for an actual defense.

Postgame Quotes

Narduzzi:

“It did happen fast,” MSU defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi said. “There were some short fields. We just didn’t get it done defensively. They made plays and we didn’t.”

Really? After the way this season’s gone, he’s going to imply that the offense/special teams created the defense’s problems?

Also, Jones’ dad on the NFL:

“We don’t have any plans for the NFL right now,” Jones Sr. said outside Spartan Stadium on Saturday night, after MSU was crushed 42-14 by Penn State. “But we will talk about it next week.”

Ye gods

A short field doesn’t make a damn bit of difference when you forget things like “putting a defender in the same time zone as the receiver”.

by SpartanDan on Nov 22, 2009 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Short fields?

That’s insulting. Whatever.

by intrpdtrvlr on Nov 21, 2009 10:49 PM CST reply actions

More from Pat!

Penn State did have some short fields in the second half, but when the drives are 3, 3, and 1 plays, the field length does not matter.

Another quote from Pat:

Defensively overall, we played a good first half but it’s a 60-minute game. We didn’t play well enough in the second half to get it done. We had a chance and just didn’t make plays when we needed to. I feel bad for our seniors, who played their tails off. Our kids played their tails off. We never, ever question their effort. That’s the most important thing: effort.

Is is just me or is he throwing the players under the bus?

by DrDetroit on Nov 22, 2009 4:15 AM CST reply actions

Nah, I don’t think so. In a related note, check out some of Dantonio’s comments. He listed “execution” as a distinct third behind other factors, including coaching, for losing the game. Nice contrast to someone else we know.
