Ask an FGCU Eagle Fan

I know what you're thinking, "they have fans?"

Seriously though, I thought it might be interesting for all of you to learn a little about your early season sacrificial lamb, so if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

To preempt your first question: No, I don't think we have a chance in Hell. Staying within 30 points is a moral victory.

Reed Baker

Another former Wolverine! (We’re playing one tonight in our final exhibition game.) Looks like he’s your top scorer?

Baker

Baker and Reggie Chambers make for a solid guard combination. Chambers is small, but he’s speedy and tenacious, and is more of a threat to drive. Baker isn’t as good on the drive, but is a better distributor and a better jump shooter.

With Franklin graduating last year, Baker will be the main threat from behind the arc. However, there are two freshman that I am very interested to see how they play. Those two are Hunter Miller and Brett Williams. Williams won the team’s three-point shooting contest, and Miller set all kinds of state records in Tennessee in high school.

Last season Baker had a great first half against Florida. If I recall, he was 5/6 from 3-point range in the first half, including one from the hash over Calathes. Florida shut him down in the 2nd by using the double-team and traps. If he gets hot, it’s wise to ensure he sees no daylight the rest of the game.

Last year’s biggest problem was inexperience. We had 11 new players on the roster, an although it wouldn’t have mattered, the unfamiliarity and inexperience really showed against Kansas to open the season.

Kyle Marks and Derrick O’Neill are going to be the go guys in the paint, while if you see George Erkvania in the game, he’s just there to be a body on defense. He has the size to play on a bigger school, but lacks any semblance of offensive skills.

Overall, this team plays tough, although they tend to be led by emotion. If they get down, keep the foot on the pedal to break their will. However, if things even look like a run could get started, they thrive on energy plays and the momentum follows, so calling a timeout can ice them off.

Something interesting...

I know that there aren’t many people that care about women’s basketball, but our women’s team is sick-nasty.

In two years of D-I play, they have made the NIT both years. They also made history by becoming the first team to win a postseason game in their first year of D-I.

Our ladies will be visiting MSU on December 16, as part of a home-and-home where you all will be visiting The Nest in 2012.

So yeah, if I had to pick an FGCU/MSU game that I would like to watch, as in, will be a competitive game, that would be it.
