Alamo Bowl Blowout

Mark May picked the Michigan State/Texas Tech matchup as the non-BCS game most likely to be a blowout. He cites the suspension of eight players and Tech's passing abilities. Nothing we didn't already know, but its getting old that the suspensions are constantly brought up whenever the Alamo is featured. I fear the possibility of a blowout, but there is a reason they play the games on the field and not on paper.

It is true...

…that in the previous bowl games Dantonio and his defensive staffs seem to have come up with pretty effective defensive game plans. They held BC and Matt Ryan and the Georgia and Matthew Stafford down much better than expected. MSU basically lost those games on offense. Taylor Potts, or Leach QB model year 2009, would seem less scary.

But both the ‘07 and ’08 defenses looked better and were more sucessful during their seasons, and on paper, the Dread Pirate Leach’s offense is exactly what can tear us apart.

I don’t see a blow out, because I think MSU can still produce some points without Cunningham and Dell. A Minnesota-like game is my fear, where we never really stop Texas Tech and ultimately can’t keep up.

Prepared?

By doing what, practicing the Cover 4 more? MSU was exposed this year as using a very bad defensive scheme. TT should be able to take advantage of that.

If MSU can move the ball and control the clock they’ll be fine. I still think TT will put up 35+ points though.

This team is one demensional....

…….BC and Geo could both run the ball…..this team is all pass and thats it……Wait and see we win by 2 tds.

Also in those 2 games.....

…..We went against QBs that were both top 3 picks in the nfl draft after each game.

BC couldn't pass

Well, Matt Ryan could throw, I guess. But his receivers dropped a godzillion balls. Give him receivers that were even mildly competent, and that game is a 40-point beatdown.

Also, we actually had a defense that was somewhere in the realm of mild competence that year. This year, that is not the case. Tech won’t have to run the ball, not when their WRs are wide open enough to moonwalk into the endzone.

The only reason this game won’t be a curbstomping is that Tech has no defense either. 45 might not be enough for either team to win.

I love MSU

but idk if they could win this game. With out 2 of our starting recievers (and i read some where another backup reciever got suspended) then White is the only reciever Tech needs to shut down. I dont see us having much of a pass game and our run game is sub par. Terrible pass D isnt gunna fair well against T Tech

I am not buying a blow out.. just a tough hard fought struggle

Based on the match ups it’s pretty safe to say Leach won’t change his game plan. The offensive scheme is going to be series of RB draws, short slants and wide receiver screens. Out let/ dump off pass to a RB in a 4 x wide out set. Best offensive set (IMO) is the 2 x back set because it lends itself to a little misdirection, off tackle sweeps or RB screen.
We have seen in the near term 3 x bowl teams in a row which successfully set their defense to stop Tech’s preferred play selection. Golden Gophers, Cavaliers and Rebels, first two managed it for 2 or 3 quarters, last one managed to unsettle the Leach offense for 7 /8ths of the game. Result was a double digit loss in the Cotton Bowl.
On defense you will see the Tech Def coordinator play very basic defense with 4 down linemen & 3 Linebackers on 1st and 2nd down and 5 x def backs or the hybrid safety / linebacker on passing downs.
Our best down linemen is a NT Colby Whitlock, best sacker is Brandon Sharpe a fast Def end. The top cornerback is senior Jamar Wall he is as close to lock down guy as we have.
They like to use a "joker" set – stand up def end/linebacker – in the middle of the field – who is rushing late – against a running QB. Scheming to stop up the middle and prevent the 5 – 9 yard scramble.
I haven’t seen your Offense much in Big 10 action (not because I am uninterested but it’s tough to see Big 10 football in Texas). So just asking what’s the preferred set for Kirk Cousins and Coach Dantonio? An I backfield / single back with a TE or a flanker to unbalance the side of the field your folks are trying to attack? A 3 x wide receiver set?

Ive seen Tex Tech...

…..and they dont look that good to me….all this talk about a beat down is stupid….Oh wel I see a victory…..Not a very good Oline and a average defense at best…..No way its a blowout.

Much like the Big 10 the competition in the Big XII is brutal

Raiders’ played their best games against Nebraska and Oklahoma. The first an away game in Lincoln actually was an anomaly the Tech defenders shut NU offenses down for a quarter and half allowing very few first downs and only 7 points in garbage time. The defense got 3 sacks on them in three successive series. Versus Oklahoma a home game. They stopped 3 x OU drives inside the 20 in the first half, OU scored only 2 x FG’s. 2nd half the Raider offense punched them in the mouth 2 x 6-7 plus minute drives in the 3rd and 4th periods hanging 40 plus on the Sooners.
Tech routinely has 2 x big scheme problems. One they really need to have an offensive rhythm between the QB and the receivers. This is difficult with finals and holiday interruptions. So offensively you see a slow first quarter plus. Secondly the if defense can’t get off the field and or the opponent has success running- like versus Oklahoma state a – a 7 point loss and versus Texas s A & M a 22 point blowout in Lubbock. A running attack that gets over 4 yards a pop really tips the scales against them. The magic number over the course of the last 3 x season has been 200 yards rushing. So the going in thought when playing the Raiders is to shorten the game with a successful rushing attack and short passes

QB Concerns

It has been mentioned that Taylor Potts will start for TTU. He is WILDLY inconsistent. He has played a couple of admiral games and led the team well… and he has done just the opposite just as many times. If he comes out firing and our WR’s will hang on to the ball (we’ve had some issue with this this year) I see a good game with the nod going toward TTU. If he comes out flat, throwing off his back foot and throwing behind WRs all day then you can chalk up that 2 TD win for MSU Bennie seems so sure of. The way I see it each team has about a 50-50 chance at this point.

I’m with centex in wondering if you have a mobile QB. Is he prone to scramble for 7-13 yards when a play breaks down? If so I will give the nod to MSU regardless of who shows up at QB for TTU. This has been a perennial weak point for our defense with this year being no improvement over previous years.

Not really

Kirk Cousins, who’s listed as the starter and should be, is a classic drop-back MSU QB. He did lead the team in rushing against Michigan, but he normally keeps looking for a receiver maybe to a fault. He can pick up the odd first down, but he’s not going to run the option and he’s not going to break a real big run.

Keith Nichol (who’d committed to MSU, changed to Oklahmoa when John L. Smith was fired and then transferred back to MSU after losing the QB battle to Bradford as a true frosh) is a pretty good runner and Dantonio has vexed the fanbase by mixing him in for a series, or a few plays here and there during the season, so you might see him, but Cousins is listed as the starter.

Here is a comparison of the two QBs.

by witless chum on Dec 18, 2009 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

The worst thing MSU could do

Is to knock Taylor Potts out of the game early. Our backup QB is much more mobile, makes quicker reads, and is less prone to panic and make bad throws. He’s not perfect and he has his own set of flaws, but he’s not nearly as frustrating for us to watch. In the 2-1/2 games he played, he led the team on something like 16 TD drives while throwing 2 picks. Unfortunately (for us), he broke his foot in the Nebraska game (finished the game anyway) and has been hobbling around since then.

For reasons unfathomable to most Tech fans, Leach insists on sticking with Potts even though Sheffield should be fully recovered by bowl season.
