My fellow Midwesterners, our long conferencewide nightmare is over

(I've been really anxious about the possibility of using that headline.  Isn't it a beauty?)

Tell your Sagarin-based odds to shut up.  The Big Ten pulls it out by going 3-2 on the road--with perhaps the biggest win resulting from a 23-point Illini comeback in Clemson, South Carolina.

It's mildly ironic that the conference finally took down the ACC without a win from MSU, the only Big Ten team that doesn't have an all-time losing record in the challenge (5-5 now).  But what's good for the Big Ten is good for MSU.

In other words: WOOOOO!!!!

WELL DONE

Congratulations to the Big Ten!!! College sports (esp rankings) are based purely on perception and winning the BIG TEN/ACC Challenge goes a long way in determining that. Well done everyone! Now we must do the same in the bowl games

Wish we'd contributed to it

But anything that’ll get the pundits off our conference’s back is a good thing.

Wooo indeed, my friends

Wooo!

It’s a shame neither Indiana nor Michigan State could pull out a win, but everything seems slightly assuaged now that the Big Ten has finally come out on top. It’s just a relief to finally, finally get that monkey off our backs.

On the Wisconsin/Duke...

…broadcast, Bob Knight asserted that most Big 10 fans weren’t really rooting for the other teams to win, because we hate them too much.

As an MSU fan pulling for Wisconsin and the Grinch, I can assure him that wasn’t universally true.

But mostly just wooooo!

That was the hardest one

I can’t stand Count BoRyanula at all.

Bob Knight is wrong

The Big Ten has been curb stomped so much recently, we have been collectively backed into a corner. Our conference has been perceived to a point where an undefeated Lions team (last year) and undefeated Hawkeye team (this year) could and would probably miss out on a title shot simply due to perception. The same applied to our conference in basketball. That has led most logical fans to understand we are only as good as our weakest member. It is simply shortsighted to root against your rivals when they aren’t playing in conference.

I'm Selling...

…on the notion of feeling good that the Big Ten won The Challenge despite another MSU loss to North Carolina. Any good will that now shines down on the conference from winning The Challenge is lost on MSU for the three-peat shellacking we got at the hands of UNC.

Wisconsin looks pretty good, michigan awful

I watched some of the basketball last night. Great stuff. I hate to admit it, but I was rooting for the Badgers. Other than their meltdown at the end where they almost gave away the game, they looked awfully good. Their execution is flawless, and they look big and strong with savvy guard play. The game down there will be a hard win.

On the other hand, Michigan seemed awful. Harris may be the best player in the conference, and yet he doesn’t see the ball on every possession; Sims did not appear improved to me — and they don’t play a lick of defense.

Harris takes a lot of terrible shots

Because no one is hitting anything right now, Manny’s chucking up some just hideous shots, and he can’t make ANYTHING from 3 right now. He was 1 for 6 last night and the one he did make banked in from the top of the key.

They could have won one of the Old Spice games but Manny chucked up a 3 with a ton of time left on the shotclock (missing it, of course) in a tie game and gave the other team the last chance to win, which they did.

But I think he’s doing that in part because the only guy sorta making anything is LLP, so he’s losing trust in his teammates and feeling like he needs to do it himself, which doesn’t work. Hell, last night Stu Douglass passed up open 3s when they were working on a comeback, something he’d never do if he had any confidence right now, so instead they ended up with highly contested Manny shots, some of which were blocked. Sims has been terrible the last week, and I think they’re still figuring out what they’re doing on defense since Morris is active but isn’t anywhere as good as CJ Lee was last year defensively. They’ll get better (they can’t shoot this badly all the time, guys like Vogrich aren’t going to miss open looks all year) but they’re digging themselves a hole where they may have to go 11-7 in conference to get in the tourney. Fortunately, they do have a good OOC game in the middle of conference play when UConn comes to Ann Arbor so they’ll have a chance at a name victory when presumably they should have it together.

They have no size depth either. Cronin isn’t ready, so they keep playing Novak at the 4 (a 6’4" guard playing power forward doesn’t work) because they want to have Gibson available to spell Sims. Gibson needs to play more.

Someone apparently forgot to tell Illinois that their game started an hour earlier than they actually started playing.

Last night

I, too, found myself rooting for the Skunks. It felt dirty. But I’m a non-fan of Duke so the rotten taste in my mouth was somewhat diluted. I saw the second half of the Illini game and wow, how were they down by so much at the half? Even as the second half started they still looked flat. I do think they got some break calls, but many kudos to McCamey and the Mikes for putting it all out there and giving a great performance. Michigan looked dreadful, losing their third in a row after needing overtime to beat Creighton. I’m really surprised. I agree Harris looked to be forcing all sorts of stuff and Sims just looked like he had no idea what was going on.
