Game Thread: Spartans vs. Bulldogs (of The Citadel Variety)

Michigan St. Spartans at The Citadel Bulldogs, Dec 7, 2009 6:05 PM CST

Pregame Linking Laconically (almost all football, for some reason)

I should be actively engaged in tonight's game thread (having just recently discovered that I get ESPNU).

Go State!  Beat the Bulldogs!

Ouch...

MSU forgetting to defend the 3 already… disappointing.

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 6:11 PM CST reply actions

Well, they're knocking down some tough looks, too

More disappointed that the early offense was so reliant on Morgan’s mismatch down low.

Another team lighting it up

Looks like another school that is saving its best shooting night for the Spartans. We more aggressive early on, which I’m glad to see, but still only 6 points in the first four minutes.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 6:11 PM CST reply actions

This could be the day...

That Nix hits another free throw.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 6:17 PM CST reply actions

Anyone else...

feel like Kalin is playing for the NBA and not the team? Seems on that break he should have dished off to an open Raymar…. feel like he’s making the decision to keep it instead of dishing off in instances like that a lot…

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

I think Izzo teaches it that way

If you’ve got the edge to score or get fouled in transition, you take it.

Can't see game

Ironically no ESPNU in the dorms.

I’m more afraid of Harbaugh than Kelly. Kelly has spent no more than three years at any division one program, so there’s at least an outside shot that he is not good at evaluating talent in recruiting. Harbaugh also will want the same type of players on offense that we do, while Kelly is a spread guy.

Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

by Seer on Dec 7, 2009 6:20 PM CST reply actions

I'll buy that

Harbaugh’s shown he can have success at a school that places a higher emphasis on academics.

Neither seems like an ideal fit from a personality/PR standpoint.

Nice move...

go Kalin… and nice job by Sherman with the steal

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 6:27 PM CST reply actions

Chris Allen with 2 bad plays in a row.

What was he thinking with that switch on defense?

by Chris in Kzoo on Dec 7, 2009 6:34 PM CST reply actions

A fire needs to be lit...

under Summers and Allen. They have disappeared, and we need them.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Attaboy, Chris

Shooting the ball when he catches it.

Bulldogs hit rim with 3/4-court shot to end half

Would have been perfect end to half if it went in.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Dec 7, 2009 6:51 PM CST reply actions

Good news...

is we’re still up at the half and the Citadel can’t possibly shoot that well for the second half (can they?)

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

First Half Stats

MSU up 40-36 in roughly 32 possessions.

The Citadel 8-10 on 3s, 3-12 on 2s.

23-8 rebounding edge for MSU.

7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block for Roe

6 different Bulldogs have hit a 3. For those that don’t get ESPNU, trust me when I tell you that a number of the looks have been from well behind the line.

Give The Citadel a still-healthy 50% 3-point shooting percentage and we’re up 13.

+1

I’m impressed with how well we’re dealing with essentially the worst-case scenario.

MNF

Harbaugh denies interest in the ND job.

Allen's finally hitting some shots

and he’s giving it away on the other end.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 7:13 PM CST reply actions

allens alright

sank a three ball. Very solid perimiter defender.

I think he needs to drive more. He seems to eb good at finishing. That shotll get hot though. I have faith.

and no negative vibes!

Go Green.

by zachjuett on Dec 7, 2009 7:16 PM CST reply actions

Drive more?

Allen should never drive. He turns it over every frickin time he does.

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

nope

sicky at finishing around rim. I’ll take him driving or everyone but lucas and summers

by zachjuett on Dec 7, 2009 7:19 PM CST up reply actions

Second half start

5 points out of the gate in the second half in four and a half minutes. We have to improve at the start and out of halftime.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 7:17 PM CST reply actions

So...

Apparently their hot shooting can keep up through the 2nd half. Tooo many uncontested shots.

by MooTheKow on Dec 7, 2009 7:23 PM CST reply actions

I have to wonder...

about the effect on my lifespan watcing these games.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 7:28 PM CST reply actions

If Lucas would do that more often

we would get a lot more easy baskets. Two beautiful assists in the last few minutes.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 7:39 PM CST reply actions

No problem

Wish I would have looked for it sooner.

by AlkalineKidAP on Dec 7, 2009 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

Better late than never. Go Green.

Yes, we have holes. It’s December. As a fanbase, we can certainly pull the Debbie Downer bit.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:46 PM CST reply actions

I shall not apologize for my downerness

I want just one season of staying in the top 10 all year.

We are.

Ask anyone not in East Lansing. Ask the national people. They’ll tell you we are plenty elite.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

Certainly in NCAA results, which matter most

But not in the regular season. Haven’t been a #1 seed since 2001.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Dec 7, 2009 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

You have a point.

But I can only name two programs significantly better than ours since 99. Kansas and UNC. And UNC was god-awful in the Guthridge/Doherty years.

Those guys pick their players out of a catalog. We can’t do that. I’ll take what we have quite happily.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Just being greedy.

Fight for The Only Colors: Green and White!

by KJ@theonlycolors on Dec 7, 2009 8:02 PM CST up reply actions

Again...I'm not being nasty.

But I ask my Spartan bretheren to look at Illinois after 05, or UCLA this year and last year, or LSU since 06. Lots of schools make it once or twice and then hit the skids, comparatively speaking. To do what State has done is rare. We had the two first round exits in the Davis years, which were very disappointing, and we finally ended that Big 10 title drought last year. But we’ve never been downright bad, and pretty much everyone else has at one point or another.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Right.. it'd be so nice

not to lose to the early season games… but still… hard pressed to find a coach that gets a team playing their best come March.

by TMadison25 on Dec 7, 2009 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

Not bashing anyone in particular.

Just the base overall tends to overreact to early season troubles, like everyone saying this is the 05-06 team. That team had size and a freshman point guard. Totally different animal.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Looking good, Delvon.

Right until that second free throw.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

52% FT

for Delvon? I thought we addressed this?

by TMadison25 on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Other teams are capable of playing really well in Nov. and Dec.

I believe we can too. Seems like a reasonable expectation.

by donaldo on Dec 7, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Those teams...

don’t run 40 plays. Even the Gold Standard Izzo teams struggled early. It’s the nature of the system.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

I am actually encouraged...

by the offensive execution the last few trips.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:54 PM CST reply actions

I agree

well-executed set plays in final 5 to 10 minutes

by MKgreen on Dec 7, 2009 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

Foot on the line

Have we ever taken a three? Or are they all deep twos?

by TMadison25 on Dec 7, 2009 7:54 PM CST reply actions

I've been asking the same thing the past two years

I swear these guys forgot that the line was moved back a foot.

Durrell...

the season has begun. We need you. That is all.

by rook34 on Dec 7, 2009 7:58 PM CST reply actions

Question

Is there something this team can do defensively to cut down opposing three point %? Or is it just bad luck?

Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

by Seer on Dec 7, 2009 8:04 PM CST reply actions

It's bad luck.

Stats-wise, we’re actually pretty good defending the 3. 27% before tonight.

The % people are shooting from 2 against us is a much larger problem.
