A Banner Year for MSU Basketball
[Bumped. --LVS]
As a Spartan fan, I was overjoyed when I discovered Spartans Weblog during the 2007-08 basketball season. Quality analysis, insightful commentary... but if you're here at The Only Colors, chances are you already know that! I e-mailed KJ during the off-season and offered to create a new banner for the 2008-09 season. The resulting montage of great Spartan guards was fairly well-received and even led to some analysis and discussion. After this year's memorable season, a few commenters at SW inquired about additions to the banner. Since the banner could not make the transition to the SB Nation platform, I offer you, my Spartan brethren, this updated banner (right click-View Image for larger):

What do you think? Has Kalin Lucas earned a spot among the greatest guards in Michigan State basketball history? Do we need another year to make that call? Statistics to back up your opinions are always welcome.

Still
I can’t help but feel that Walton was equally deserving of that spot.
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
He doesn't look out of place to me
Hard to argue with a Big Ten POTY award. With another year like this one in terms of individual/team performance, you can make an argument he’ll enter Magic/Cleaves territory.
There’ll be more on Lucas on the front page of the site shortly . . .

Agreed
Kalin definitely delivered following a promising freshman year as an All-Big Ten Team Honorable Mention. As the leading scorer on a team that made it to the NCAA Finals and the Big Ten POTY, it’s hard to deny him a place.
@Seer- Walton certainly deserves some recognition for his leadership & defensive prowess, but the current banner personnel seemed a better fit with Lucas’ combination of dynamic point skills and prolific scoring. Walton deserves a medal, not just a Photoshop tribute ;-)

Hes Good..
Hes had two good seasons but i would really like to another good season to be classified with the greats. i think hes on the path to become one but i wanna see one more good season
2009: Detroit Lions 16-0
For me,
he’s already more deserving than Neitzel. Empirically, he’s already done two big things which Drew never did: win a B10 POY, and win a conference championship. Plus, Kalin was the star on a team which made it to Monday Night; while Neitzel was on a Final Four team, he certainly didn’t contribute as much as Kalin did this year.

Neitzel may be the only reason the tournament appearance streak is still alive, though. His barrage of 3s all season long (the Ohio State game where he nearly pulled off a 20-point comeback by himself, the four-bounces-on-the-rim shot against Wisconsin, half a dozen four-point plays after the opponents decided they had to hack him to keep him from going off) was often the only consistent scoring we had. Carrying a team with zero seniors and just one other junior (Naymick) to the second round of the NCAA tournament might be more impressive than what Lucas did this year.
Lucas belongs there, but Neitzel definitely does too.
