Suton's Draft Status

(Bumped - can anyone answer this?  It seems strange that he wouldn't want the exposure. - G0EL)

On the strength of his terrific postseason, Goran Suton appears to be rated the number three center in the draft, behind Thabeet and Mullens, (HoopsWorld).  Strangely he will not be attending either the NBA combine or the Reebok EuroCamp, either of which would enable a borderline player like him to get more visibility with NBA scouts.  He might not have been invited to the NBA combine (Combine list), but reportedly declined an invitation to the EuroCamp (DraftExpress).  DraftExpress is uncharitably speculating that after his performance in March, his stock can only go down.  Anybody heard any more about what's up with G and his current draft status?

Yeah, that is strange.

I don’t know why he would turn down the chance to further improve his draft stock.

He might end up in the Euro League anyway. If I remember correctly, there are some European leagues that dictate the number of American players on a team. With Suton’s Bosnian passport, he wouldn’t count against that American limit.

Is it a matter of fit?

With some teams, Utah?, Suton makes a lot of sense. He is the kind of combo player who can provide some difficulties for NBA power forwards who struggle when pulled away from the basket. The thing that NBA scouts will know, that I don’t, is whether Suton still projects or if he has reached his potential. I believe that there is still room for growth, but I am a homer.

Maybe Suton and his agent believe that he can only hurt himself under the microscope, and are content either way, if he starts his career in the NBA or Europe. I think that the Suton is not someone who passes the “eyeball” test, he needs an opportunity to prove his worth, due to his inconsistency and his sometime apparent lack of focus.

Will he grow any more? That would be another factor, it would seem. I like his prospects better than Paul Davis’, who I believe hit his ceiling while at MSU, whereas Suton should have some growth room.

As the honorary president of the Goran Suton Fan Club,

I know I should do everything in my power to play up his ability at the next level. But, frankly, I think he may have come close to hitting his ceiling during the NCAA Tournament run. He can knock down the 20-footer now. He knows how to move his feet to deny position on defense. And, as always, he rebounds as well as you could ask of a guy who can’t jump. In short, he’s already learned all the old man tricks; what’s left?

Ultimately, I think his lack of athletic ability prevents him from projecting as a major NBA contributor. The thinking may be to try to grab some major Euro money now on the strength of the tournament run. (Don’t know enough about the EuroCamp to know what the deal is there.)

EuroCamp

According to the camp website

“The Reebok Eurocamp is a three day event taking place each June at La Ghirada Sport Complex in Treviso, Italy. Each year 48 elite players, ages 18-21, are invited to participate and gain the opportunity to showcase their skills to scouts, coaches, and general managers from a number of basketball teams and leagues from around the world, including the Euroleague and the National Basketball Association (NBA), as well as gain coverage from major global medial outlets.

With a format that utilizes the morning sessions for skill workouts and the afternoons for 5-on-5 play, this camp displays the most talented international basketball players from around the world. A recent addition has also been to feature number of all star games against under-20 national teams. This incorporation provides the opportunity to display a greater amount of talent to those in attendance."

NBA scouts will be in attendance and it is apparently viewed as a sort of one-stop shop to see a group of top European prospects at one time without having to traipse all over Europe to do it. Because of the scouts a number of draft-eligible US college players will also be there.

As far as Suton’s potential, I have to believe that if Chris Dudley can have a lengthy career in the NBA earning millions of dollars then there’s at least a chance for G.
