Skills from the Agoge: Dantonio swipes MI QB Recruit, Joe Boisture from Boston College

(Bumped - an in-depth post on Boisture is coming tonight.  I'm having a hard time remembering more drama around a position commitment than QB for the 2010 class. - Pete)

In ancient times, young Spartans were trained in the agoge to become soldiers and citizens of Sparta. One of the important skills they had to develop was that they were given scant supplies, and were thus forced (and encouraged) to steal what they would need (if caught, they were severely punished).

Mark Dantonio channeled his inner Spartan today and pulled out his ancient training. MI QB prospect Joe Boisture has apparently broken his verbal to Boston College and is now committed to play for MSU. Boisture is a 4 star on Scout and currently the 14th ranked QB in the nation. On Rivals he is also a 4 star and considered the 4th best Pro-Style QB.

Star-divide

Now, I'm not going to condone aggressively pursuing other school's commits, but I think we can all appreciate the occasional poach, especially when it means keeping a kid in his home state and when it means more talent in the maligned Big Ten.

In addition to getting this commit, it appears that we will probably not be taking Robert Bolden. From what I've seen elsewhere, he wanted to be the only QB commit in his class. That's not terribly worrisome, except that it may make it more likely that he'll be heading to Penn State and he is a good QB. That said, we've got a good one here.

Agreed

that this almost certainly means Bolden to PSU. I’m happy with this, though — Boisture would have been much higher on our collective radar screens had he not verballed to BC.

DRAMA!
I’m having a hard time remembering more drama around a position commitment than QB for the 2010 class

What’s especially amazing about it is that QB is arguably one of the positions of least need in this class. If we had gone without one I wouldn’t have been too upset with Nichol, Cousins and Maxwell on roster.

Also, consider that if Boisture gets an elite 11 invite, which seems very possible to me, that in 2010 we would have 3 elite 11 QBs on roster in Nichol, Maxwell and Boisture.

Bolden

In addition to getting this commit, it appears that we will probably not be taking Robert Bolden. From what I’ve seen elsewhere, he wanted to be the only QB commit in his class.

That doesn’t make sense. PSU already has Paul Jones who is ranked as the #5 QB in the country by Rivals and #3 on Scout. We also have Kevin Newsome who will be a freshman this fall. If Bolden is afraid of competition, PSU is not the place to go.

I’m not sure why Bolden would want to come to PSU other than he must really like the school. The depth chart isn’t favorable for him, but the Spread HD probably fits his style of play better than Dantonio’s power running game with drop back passers.

Congrats on getting Boisture. Your class is coming together nicely.

Well there are other factors

There are rumors going around about Bolden Sr pushing him to PSU. that are unflattering, and which I don’t care to repeat because I have seen no credible evidence about it.

However, your point also makes sense. Perhaps Bolden should consider another up and coming Big Ten, spread program in Northwestern.

Check your facts

Where did you hear that? You might want to check your sources on that one. In no way did Coach D aggressively pursue Boisture. Instead of just making assumptions, you might want to look into things before you post.

My mistake

I meant that to contrast the actual situation. IE, aggressively poaching commits on a consistent basis is not cool, but getting a recruit away from another school once in a while is cool.

That said, you’re right that this situation was nothing like the bolded portion. From what I understand, Boisture approached Dantonio in the last week asking for an offer, not the other way around.

No problem

I just didn’t want people to think Coach D went against his own policy of not recruiting those who are committed elsewhere. Boisture, like Barrent and Gainer last year, approached MSU on their own.

Keep up the good work.

Never too many

“What’s especially amazing about it is that QB is arguably one of the positions of least need in this class. If we had gone without one I wouldn’t have been too upset with Nichol, Cousins and Maxwell on roster.”

Yeah, but Dantonio has said in the past he means to recruit a QB in every class because of the importance of the position. Just looking at recent MSU history, there have been at least three QBs who transferred out that should have been on the roster last year (Dominic Natale (who supposedly has chance to start for Rutgers), Nick Fowles and Connor Dixon), ending up with our punter as third-string QB last year.

"ending up with our punter as third-string QB last year"

I still get heartburn thinking about that.

I think...

…I spent all my heartburn on worrying about a Ringer injury, but that’s true. If Hoyer and Cousins had gone down we probably would have started running the wild Sparty. Or shaved Keith Nichol’s head and tried to pass him off as a rejuvenated Hoyer.

I think the next option

was the guy who throws frisbees to Zeke.
