Cousins

If the race is as close as they coaches have been eluding, then I have to imagine that Cousins being voted as the team captain will give the extra points he needs to edge ahead of Nichol for game 1.

That said, being captain doesn’t assure anyone of starting.

Either way, I’ll support the decision. Great to have QB depth.

Nichol

Even through camp, Nichol has continued to be noted as having the superior athletic ability in comparison to Cousins. Cousins has great leadership skills, and that’s something I’ve been tremendously impressed with. But MSU will need to put out the guy that gives us the best chance to win, and I think that will come down to Nichol.

But same as JasonCKent, I’ll support the decision either way. Go State!

I prefer Nichol start (I remember hating him when he went to Oklahoma because of JL Smith getting canned), but I think Cousins will get the starting gig.

Nichol

He didn’t come from a B12 contender to sit behind Cousins. I know the team values Cousins as a leader, but MSU should be past the days of paying homage simply to pay homage (Van Dyke starting over Smoker). The time to win is right now and a more mobile quarterback gives you a better chance in a year where the running game is an unknown. Put as many athletes in the backfield as possible, and I have a feeling Nichol is going to be a really good QB.

Cousins, for now

I would be very shocked if Nichol started against the other MSU on Saturday (I’m so excited to finally be able to write “Saturday”, not "on Sep. 5th), although I would also be suprised if Nichol didn’t turn out to be the better QB in the long run. I expect Cousins to start games 1 and 2, and Nichol to be the starter from ND on.

FWIW

Rexrode thinks it will be Nichol.

Nichol

He’s the superior athlete (though Cousins is supposed to be quicker on his feet than, say, Brian Hoyer) and if he’s hung with Cousins this long, he’s obviously close in the most important aspect, decision making.

Mostly, I vote doesn’t matter who starts against M(t)SU. They’ll have the nonconference season to both get time and shake this out on the field with who plays better. If they’re still tied, I think Nichol’s better running ability will break the tie.

Cousins and then Nichol

I agree with Zeke, Cousins has played and did pretty well against Ohio State. However, at some point, Nichol’s talent should be better suited to our somewhat inexperienced O-line. He reminds me of Stanton, regarding his ability to achieve a positive result from a botched play.
