Studens

Rumor has it, the students were lining up to enter the Stadium early today. Did I miss something? I thought we waited until half way through the first half to be in the stadium. Have we finally learned from the Penn States and Ohio States???

Good start for the o

Nice throw to Blair. Let’s see how the D does.

Tackling

Tackling not looking good so far.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 11:16 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

D line

I’m concerned by the lack of pressure I’ve seen so far from the d line. Forces MSU to blitz to create pressure which takes guys out of coverage. Against spread teams it’ll be deadly. Think we will see the 3-3-5 sometime this year? Or 4-3 with a deathbacker?

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 11:22 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Deep throw

Too bad Blair couldn’t hold on. Nice to see MSU stretching it deep so far. Don’t remember that many legit deep throws last year.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 11:27 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Hold on to the damn ball!

4 fumbles so far this season. Fortunately no turnovers.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 11:36 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Fortunate not to be an interception

But that’s 2 TDs in a row that receivers have let out of their hands. Cousins is putting it where they can get it but still a little too close so the defense can make a play. On that last play he should have thrown it under to the drag route for the first down. Still, you can’t fault aggressiveness.

Nice blitz

Well done in the red zone. Still, CMU is moving the ball a little too easily.

This is ugly. If we play like this for the rest of the season, we’re looking at 6-6 or 7-5. However, I think they’ll pick it up in the second half.

First half thoughts

Offense: Cousins looks more comfortable. He is 3/6 but 2 drops. Nichol just not connecting.

Defense: Looks like we will struggle with spread teams this year. D-line appears good at stopping the run, but can’t get much push on the pass rush. Linebackers look pretty good. Frustrated by the mediocre tackling and the D backs slipping.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 12:55 PM CDT reply actions

Ye gods

That looked exactly like the LaTech game from my freshman year.

by SpartanDan on Sep 12, 2009 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

Ugh.

What a poor effort. I can’t wait to watch the 2nd half replay and break it down.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 2:33 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

two points

1. We rushed the ball 29 times for a total 106 yards (3.6 average) against a team that was ranked 118th out of 119 teams in pass defense last year. Cousins was highly effective with the pass, why not stick to what works? This seemed like extremely poor play calling.

2. The preview totally jinxed us

by dcspartan1 on Sep 12, 2009 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

Cousins

In the first half, Cousins showed a tendency to go for the home run when he could have just thrown for the first down. He needs to be a little more selective. Also, we saw the return of the “just a yard short” play — need 3, get 2 and so on. Execution needs to be better.

Also, I think Cousins may have separated himself in the QB battle. Barring a complete meltdown against ND next week, I think we’ve got our starter.

by CPT Hoolie on Sep 12, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Bad Tackling

It had less to do with the play calling, and damn near everything to do with the HORRIBLE tackling in the open field. Too often, Michigan State defenders were looking for the big highlight reel hit, and less for the wrap tackle. The secondary coverage was atrocious. Complain about the pass rush all you want, doesn’t do any good when Michigan State defensive backs are giving 2 excellent recievers 5-8 yard cushions every play, INCLUDING 3rd and short situations.

Narduzzi needs to shove his foot right up someones anus in film and practice this week.

A 1-2 start would be absolutely disastrous with Wisconsin and Michigan looming…

by SpartyOn37 on Sep 12, 2009 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

Dissapointing

Very dissapointing loss. Other Big Ten teams aren’t playing too well this year so I was hoping for a strong game from us. The defense didn’t play well and we had no running game. I still can’t believe that on-side kick happened.

dcspartan1…we were thinking the same things. With Dell back next week I think we need open up the offense a bit and pass more. I hope to see more pass plays that involve routes with any combination of 3/4/5 receiver/TE’s trying to get open with Cousins throwing the ball. Nichol made some nice runs but to date has been inconsistent with his throws. I think we need to hand the ball to Cousins permanently.

I know Dantonio likes to run a pro-style offense and a pretty even mix of run and pass plays but we need to play to the strengths of our team. Our O-line doesn’t create good gaps for the rb’s on running plays, but seems to held up better in pass protection and we have some very talented WR’s/TE’s. Cousins was 13-18 today for 164 and a TD and was very close to having a couple more with White and Martin . I know it’s a small sample size but he has a 70% career completion rate. The guy is an accurate passer, we need to use that to our advantage more often.
