Drops

C’mon, guys. Gotta hang on to those.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 2:44 PM CDT reply actions

Caper was off to the races

One shoestring tackle away from a TD.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

Floyd

The gameplan for covering Floyd is to cover him with a LB off the line and then hope a safety picks him up? What am I missing here?

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

Hey! The safety should pick him up! That’s a great idea. From that touchdown play, it doesn’t look like they’ve thought of that yet. You should text message Narduzzi!

Ugh

I fear the gods are not with us today.

The gods...

… appear to be apologizing.

ND beating themselves

which we appreciate.

Nichol

I know Cousins played better last week, but doesn’t Nichol give us a better chance to win?

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

Keep mixing it up, I guess

Cousins plenty accurate. But can the receivers take advantage of it?

Cheer for The Only Colors: Green and White!

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

As long

as they stop dropping passes, they should be able to take advantage. Nichol’s scrambling avoided a sack.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice!

Gotta love that onside kick call… or only when it works.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 3:45 PM CDT reply actions

Seems like it was well scouted

No ND players anywhere near the ball

I don't like it

but that’s a TD

Cheer for The Only Colors: Green and White!

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

That should’ve been a TD. We are catching some breaks, but ND still puts up three more points.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

For the moment, I like replay.

But Maddy is right… they still put up another 3 on us.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 19, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Assuming this is the play I think it was ...

… they got the call right. If you’re falling down as you make the catch, you have to maintain control when you hit the ground. He didn’t. No catch.

Love to hear

the “Go Green, Go White” cheering in an opponent’s stadium.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

Notre Dame is essentially home territory

This is the first time I’ve missed going down there since 2003.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 19, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it’s perfectly fine to use Nichol in situational sets but Cousins should have the job full-time as starter.
Also curious to see whether Caper starts to take over the RB role.

by intrpdtrvlr on Sep 19, 2009 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

More shuffling?

Who knows. I’d have to lean Nichol with how poorly Cousins performed early on. It’s a hard choice to make with the score so close.

I work at the building right next to the practice field, and they were both getting heavy work all week long. I honestly don’t know if Dantonio will ever decide at this point.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 19, 2009 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Split

But of course… I’d like to see more Nichol running the show.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

How worried should we be about our defense this year? It seems like the only way we really stopped them was due to their stupid penalties.

"It's a trap!"

by AdmiralAkbar on Sep 19, 2009 4:41 PM CDT reply actions

No doubt, the penalties stopped ND from causing much damage.

I’d like to see our defense step up. I don’t want to yell at Greg Jones in class on Monday.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 19, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Guh.

I flip over from the Tigers game to see ND knocking on the damn door?

by john.kmiecik on Sep 19, 2009 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

ND still moving the ball much too easily

Don’t know how we keep up for another two quarters.

Feels an awful lot like the CMU game

Competing, yet it feels like we are losing badly.

by TMadison25 on Sep 19, 2009 4:54 PM CDT reply actions

Another broken tackle

another 1st down. Loooooonnnnngggg season ahead.

What happened to our defense being our strength? Our secondary is terrible

Ah, to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again…

"It's a trap!"

by AdmiralAkbar on Sep 19, 2009 6:13 PM CDT reply actions

WHYYYYY???

The smart, accurate, unflappable QB throws THAT pass?

Cheer for The Only Colors: Green and White!

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 6:13 PM CDT reply actions

He had played a great game up until those last couple plays. This better be all the “experience” it takes to know what to do if he is ever in that situation again though.

He made a number of throws off his back foot like that in this game, and that will always burn you eventually.

"It's a trap!"

by AdmiralAkbar on Sep 19, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Argh

How many games is Chris Rucker going to cost the Spartans this year? How did he not intercept that pass on N.D.’s last drive?

by Con-T on Sep 19, 2009 6:28 PM CDT reply actions

Well, he also made a great play to stop ND on the previous drive

Ultimately this game came down to offensive execution. Couldn’t complete the pass with Caper wide open in the end zone. And the horrific decision that resulted in the ND pick.

Cousins played very well today, but this was his game to win and he couldn’t quite make it happen.

Cheer for The Only Colors: Green and White!

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions

The fact that the game came down to offensive execution is amazing to begin with. We were getting breaks (floyd TD catch being called not a TD by stevie wonder) and the fact we were driving to even have a chance to take the lead is amazing.

So, in my mind, it didn’t come down to offensive execution. MSU’s secondary was brutal all day long and one good play from Rucker doesn’t excuse an entire game of being way too noticeable for not being in good positions to keep the ball from his cover assignment. Really poor effort defensively, to me, today.

by Mike Rogers on Sep 19, 2009 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree it’s amazing we even had a chance to get the win.

I do think you have to give ND a lot of credit on offense, though. Clausen made very good throws all day, despite getting dinged up. And Golden Tate was nearly indefensible.

Rucker’s a high risk/high reward guy. More disappointed in the inability to stop the run or get pressure on Clausen w/o blitzing.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Clarification

When I said “came down to,” I meant it in the sense of “which play decided the game at the end?” You’re probably closer to answering “What was the big-picture problem today?” correctly.

by KJ@theonlycolors on Sep 19, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotcha. I guess I was taking the phrase too literally. There’s just a lot to not like in this game. I feel like it was a 35 point loss today. Luckily I didn’t see the first 3 quarters last year, but I sat through today’s entire game (even shunned the Tigers game) and it was a bad decision.

I do give Clausen credit for picking apart the MSU defense, but a portion of that has to be on the secondary.

And not getting pressure on Clausen without blitzing sucks considering the decent sized limp he had working after hurting his toe. And when Michael Floyd goes out with a broken collarbone, that should’ve really dinged their offense but it didn’t seem to do so.

I just expected much, much more from the defense at this point in the season. Did Greg Jones even make the trip today? I felt like he was invisible all afternoon.

Man, TOC should come up with some elixir to wash this bad taste from our mouths. Quick, throw up the TJ Duckett TD catch against U of M in a fan post or something!

by Mike Rogers on Sep 19, 2009 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I did my part

Wore my old Duckett jersey today, hoping it would translate into some good luck for the new #8. Close, but no cigar.

Better break out a Mushin Muhammad jersey next time!

by Mike Rogers on Sep 19, 2009 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Argh II

Absolutely the only thing you can’t do in that situation is turn the ball over. Throw it away, take a sack, ground the ball, trip over your own feet and fall, anything else. Don’t throw a pass that there’s even a microscopic chance of an interception on. Only throw the pass if there’s no defenders anywhere near it. Oh, wait, that didn’t work the play before. Sigh.

by Con-T on Sep 19, 2009 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

Rucker

In addition to getting burned numerous times, and missing several tackles, Rucker also took the block-in-the-back penalty on the punt. He did make the one nice play on a deep ball.

by Con-T on Sep 19, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

So...

…scoring 30 points per game is not gonna be enough this year. Ugh.
