Floyd
The gameplan for covering Floyd is to cover him with a LB off the line and then hope a safety picks him up? What am I missing here?

Keep mixing it up, I guess
Cousins plenty accurate. But can the receivers take advantage of it?

As long
as they stop dropping passes, they should be able to take advantage. Nichol’s scrambling avoided a sack.
Seems like it was well scouted
No ND players anywhere near the ball

I don't like it
but that’s a TD

Agreed
That should’ve been a TD. We are catching some breaks, but ND still puts up three more points.
For the moment, I like replay.
But Maddy is right… they still put up another 3 on us.

Assuming this is the play I think it was ...
… they got the call right. If you’re falling down as you make the catch, you have to maintain control when you hit the ground. He didn’t. No catch.
Somehow, we are
AHEAD!

Notre Dame is essentially home territory
This is the first time I’ve missed going down there since 2003.

More shuffling?
Who knows. I’d have to lean Nichol with how poorly Cousins performed early on. It’s a hard choice to make with the score so close.
I work at the building right next to the practice field, and they were both getting heavy work all week long. I honestly don’t know if Dantonio will ever decide at this point.

How worried should we be about our defense this year? It seems like the only way we really stopped them was due to their stupid penalties.
"It's a trap!"
No doubt, the penalties stopped ND from causing much damage.
I’d like to see our defense step up. I don’t want to yell at Greg Jones in class on Monday.

Guh.
I flip over from the Tigers game to see ND knocking on the damn door?

Three guys all patrolling the same zone

ND still moving the ball much too easily
Don’t know how we keep up for another two quarters.

He had played a great game up until those last couple plays. This better be all the “experience” it takes to know what to do if he is ever in that situation again though.
He made a number of throws off his back foot like that in this game, and that will always burn you eventually.

Argh
How many games is Chris Rucker going to cost the Spartans this year? How did he not intercept that pass on N.D.’s last drive?
Well, he also made a great play to stop ND on the previous drive
Ultimately this game came down to offensive execution. Couldn’t complete the pass with Caper wide open in the end zone. And the horrific decision that resulted in the ND pick.
Cousins played very well today, but this was his game to win and he couldn’t quite make it happen.

The fact that the game came down to offensive execution is amazing to begin with. We were getting breaks (floyd TD catch being called not a TD by stevie wonder) and the fact we were driving to even have a chance to take the lead is amazing.
So, in my mind, it didn’t come down to offensive execution. MSU’s secondary was brutal all day long and one good play from Rucker doesn’t excuse an entire game of being way too noticeable for not being in good positions to keep the ball from his cover assignment. Really poor effort defensively, to me, today.
And now at Beyond the Boxscore and Project Prospect!
Agree it’s amazing we even had a chance to get the win.
I do think you have to give ND a lot of credit on offense, though. Clausen made very good throws all day, despite getting dinged up. And Golden Tate was nearly indefensible.
Rucker’s a high risk/high reward guy. More disappointed in the inability to stop the run or get pressure on Clausen w/o blitzing.

Clarification
When I said “came down to,” I meant it in the sense of “which play decided the game at the end?” You’re probably closer to answering “What was the big-picture problem today?” correctly.

Gotcha. I guess I was taking the phrase too literally. There’s just a lot to not like in this game. I feel like it was a 35 point loss today. Luckily I didn’t see the first 3 quarters last year, but I sat through today’s entire game (even shunned the Tigers game) and it was a bad decision.
I do give Clausen credit for picking apart the MSU defense, but a portion of that has to be on the secondary.
And not getting pressure on Clausen without blitzing sucks considering the decent sized limp he had working after hurting his toe. And when Michael Floyd goes out with a broken collarbone, that should’ve really dinged their offense but it didn’t seem to do so.
I just expected much, much more from the defense at this point in the season. Did Greg Jones even make the trip today? I felt like he was invisible all afternoon.
Man, TOC should come up with some elixir to wash this bad taste from our mouths. Quick, throw up the TJ Duckett TD catch against U of M in a fan post or something!
And now at Beyond the Boxscore and Project Prospect!
I did my part
Wore my old Duckett jersey today, hoping it would translate into some good luck for the new #8. Close, but no cigar.

Better break out a Mushin Muhammad jersey next time!

Argh II
Absolutely the only thing you can’t do in that situation is turn the ball over. Throw it away, take a sack, ground the ball, trip over your own feet and fall, anything else. Don’t throw a pass that there’s even a microscopic chance of an interception on. Only throw the pass if there’s no defenders anywhere near it. Oh, wait, that didn’t work the play before. Sigh.
Sigh, indeed

Rucker
In addition to getting burned numerous times, and missing several tackles, Rucker also took the block-in-the-back penalty on the punt. He did make the one nice play on a deep ball.
