Brian Hoyer is the new Matt Cassel?
It was a surprise when the Patriots cut QB Kevin McConnell last week; the former third round pick, whom the Lions claimed on waivers, had looked like a shoo-in to back up Tom Brady. The cut was also good news for the other quarterbacks trying to make New England's roster, including 2008 MSU starter Brian Hoyer.
And now, Hoyer looks poised to become Brady's top backup. Last night, Brian played QB for all of New England's preseason win over the Giants, and he went 18-25 with a touchdown and no interceptions. Bill Belichick even offered this effusive (by his standards) praise for Hoyer, according to the AP: "Not bad," coach Bill Belichick said. "He handled the ball fairly well, threw it accurately." That's code for: He's in!
Here's the full game recap.

Well, he's not the next Tom Brady
But there’s nothing he can do about that. You’re either born with supermodel good looks or you aren’t.

Speculation is...
…that Belichek has his lidless eye on some other vet to bring in, but Hoyer’’s almost certainly making the roster. I’m really glad to see him succeeding at the next level.
Can I be a downer for a second, though, and fear that if Hoyer is actually pretty good, it means our recievers were really screwing up last year, more so than we realized?
"[I]t means our recievers were really screwing up last year, more so than we realized?"
I think we all know that, besides Blair White, they sucked royally — goes back to Todd McShay’s analysis showing that Hoyer had 70-something passes dropped last season. Now comes the part where I stick my fingers in my ear and yell “LA LA LA THAT WAS LAST YEAR LA LA LA ALL IS WELL.” Yeah.

I'm very, very happy for him.

Way to go, Hoyer
You knew he has a big arm, and isn’t given to throwing picks. Those are two characteristics every team looks for in a QB. Congrats, Brian, now go take Tom Terrific’s starting job! (smacks self across face)
