Who?

Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Jones gets all the “inexplicably coming back for a senior season” points Brandon Graham got last year. Noted his intent is to play himself into the 1st round, but I would find it very admirable if part of this is due to wanting to see things right before he leaves after such a poor year for the D and a chance to lead the team out of the end-of-year turmoil. I got this impression and a feeling he could come back after his “how can I be a leader if no one is following?” response during bowl week to the RatherGate incident.

Per Rexrode's paraphrase

some of that was the reason.

“The promise Jones made to his mother about getting a degree was a factor. He also says he has unfinished business on the field at MSU. Jones is not projected as a first-round pick by most analysts and has consistently said since August that he wouldn’t go without a first-round assurance. More on this soon.”

Official release

“I’m excited to announce that I’m returning to Michigan State for my senior season,” Jones said. "After the bowl game, I was leaning toward returning, but it was important for me to step back and do my homework in regards to the NFL Draft. The bottom line is that I greatly value the relationships that I have here with my coaches and teammates, and I’m not ready to let go of these Spartan family ties yet. My teammates and I have some unfinished business to take care of, and despite our final record of 6-7 from 2009, we’re not that far away from being a championship contender. I have returned to help Michigan State compete for the Big Ten championship and a BCS bowl bid.

Whatever. The suspended players are coming back too.

While it is exciting that Jones is coming back, I can’t help being concerned about the program as a whole. I’ve always liked Coach D, but I can’t support letting the suspended players back on the team. What sort of message does this send to the athletes at State? That it is ok to wear ski masks to a residence hall and hit people? Total garbage. We don’t need people like that on this football team or on campus. These players don’t deserve to be at our school.

I want to know more about what happened before passing judgment

But anyone who was actually fighting should be off the team for good. If they were there but didn’t get directly involved, and all the actual fighting was done by Jenrette and Winston, I’m okay with them returning (with the understanding that it had damn well better not happen again).

Dude, c'mon

The whole ski mask thing is a myth, per the campus cops in a public statement. One guy had on a baklava of something that didn’t even hide his identity. There also appears to be very minimal damage done to everyone. The only word we have heard of anyone being hurt is the kid who’s been somewhat public and retained an attorney. And they’ve never explained what injury he sustained, just that he went to the hospital. It’s not comparable to the hockey house incident, where Winston messed up two or three people.

I think it sends the message that MSU will punish you if you screw up, but not overeact and throw people out for something that doesn’t look to me like it warrants it. At least with the information we have now. It sends the message that if you screw up twice in a major way, like Winston, Jenerette and Charles Burrell before them, you’ll be going somewhere else.
