Updated "1,000 Day" Streak List (and a new record!)
By this point, it is common knowledge that MSU has not lost to UM in football or basketball since November 3, 2007. On July 30, 2010, that streak reached 1,000 days, which marked only the 5th time either school has had a streak of that length against the other since MSU joined the Big 10 in 1953. The other 4 streaks are as follows (in order of length - the school holding the streak is in parentheses):
1,127 Days: 1/11/75 to 2/11/78 (UM)
1,092 Days: 10/13/62 to 10/9/65 (UM)
1,090 Days: 3/4/57 to 2/27/60 (MSU)
1,043 Days: 3/4/72 to 1/11/75 (UM)
At the time of this year's football game, MSU's streak had reached 1,071 days. After MSU's win to keep the streak alive, the next matchup is a basketball game on January 27, 2011. By that point, the streak will be at 1,182 days, well past the previous record. In fact, MSU fans can circle December 4 on their calendars, as that will be the day that the new record is established at 1,128 days.
And hopefully we'll be streaking for much longer...

Thanks '72 bball team!
If we didn’t win that bball game on 1/11/75 it looks like things could’ve REALLY got ugly for the Spartans. Glad I didn’t have to endure Spartan sports in the post-duffy, pre-jud era.
Exactly
It would have been an unbelievable 6-year stretch of futility if Gus’s boys didn’t pull out that victory in ’75.

Well done
It’s going to be at least another 365 days added onto the 1,071. No chance UofM beats us in basketball this year.
Don't be that guy.
That’s why they play them.
No way during our run in the run to the NC game in 2009 does Penn State beat us at home. They did for the first time ever.
No way does Northwestern beat us at home. They hadn’t won in EL in 25 years. They did.
On any given night in the Big Ten a team can catch another sleeping. Add the fact that it’s a rivalry game and strange things can happen.
I'll be "That Guy"
Michigan State wins twice but I see your point. For all we know Tim Hardaway Jr. is the next….Tim Hardaway. Zack Novak will check Delvon and DayDay in the post effectively and Stu Douglass abuses Durrell Summers. Darius Morris gets to the hoop on Lucas and Evan Smot-Whatever- does whatever he does well. Who am I kidding? They don’t have a prayer. I have not even mentioned Appling, Payne, Lucious or Nix and all of those guys would start for them as well. If we sat Roe, Green, Lucas and Summers we might be on upset alert. I’d still take the starting lineup of Appling, Lucious, Payne, Nix and Thornton over their projected lineup.

You are the only one that CAN be That Guy, That Guy.
Even the most homerrific of Michigan blogs is down on the M-Hoops’ chances of doing anything this year:
Tim Hardaway Jr.,….might be the team’s best player, which is bad for this year….[Michigan] could be a good team in 2012.
Still, I don’t like to count our streaks before they are…streaked? But the risk of it being snapping by basketball is low.
Sorry for the typo.
But the risk of it being snapping snappy is low.
Or should it have been “snapper”? Even I’m not sure. Oh Lord, please get Saturday here faster, I’m going crazy waiting for the next football game.
Don't be THAT guy.
We all know that anything could happen, but relax, have a little fun and enjoy the moment.
I’m sure this thread is somewhere else on this website, but even with all our off-season silliness in basketball, I just don’t see anything on the 2010-2011 UM bball roster that adds up to a win. I guess maybe there is one, if they shoot 75% or better from 3 point range as a team, they could win. Other than that, MSU takes two blow-out wins.
As I’m sure you know, bball is about match-ups and we’ve got them all against UM, there are probably 3 guys on our team that they just don’t have a match for. There are a few interesting Freshman on their team, but no one’s gonna match-up with Summers, and the don’t have 40 minutes of PG’s to match-up with the Lucas/Lucious combo. And the combinations we can do in the paint and crazy.
I only wish they would make it far enough in the Big Ten Tourney so we could beat them 3 times!
The real question is, with next years football game in EL, and Cousins and several other skill players coming back, how long will the streak be if the next time we lose to them is either basketball or football in 2012?
3 Guys?
There are only 3 guys on our team that they don’t have a match for?
Michigan doesn’t have a player on their roster that would crack MSU’s top 7 or 8 or 9.
They’re going to be TERRIBLE this year.
If they win 5 games in the Big Ten I’ll be surprised. If they win 12 overall I’ll be stunned.
If Izzo allows the streak to be snapped to that team I have to think he’s going to make his guys run for 24 hours straight.

You could add our other trophy game with UM
and the streak wouldn’t change.
The men’s soccer team hasn’t lost to UM since 2003. (The MSU and UM men’s soccer teams play for the Big Bear Trophy. Very cool that they have a rivalry trophy too.) While I know that soccer isn’t one of sports that we care about…eh, it seems like I’ve seen a front page post or two…
Yeah, but if you add hockey ...
… which is really the third biggest sport on campus (second at Michigan, now that their hoops team is awful), the streak is about 2.5 years shorter and encompasses a whopping one game.
You can take 28 days
off of the largest streak (1/11/75 – 2/11/78).
We beat U-M 1/11, and lost to them 2/8, of that season. So, technically, the longest streak is 1,099 days, because they didn’t start a new streak until they beat us in the second matchup that season.
So in your face, U-M teams from before I was born – your streak is under 1,100 days!
If that's the case, you'd have to take even more than that off our current one
We’re counting from the day they beat us last, not our first win after that point.
I like the thought, Dersh...
…but Dan is right – the streak is really “Time Between Victories” for the school on the wrong end of the streak.

Website
There’s got to be a Spartan out there that can put up a website with a clock on it counting the days, right?
I’ll chip in $5 for the godaddy fee on www.msuoverumstreak.com
