Looking at the Spartans sitting at 6-0, with no real behemoths on the schedule the rest of the year, there is a chance for us to go 12-0 or 11-1 and be in line for a BCS or NC berth.
Ok, probably getting ahead of things a little bit here, but daydreaming about MNC games and BCS bowls is what mid-season is for, right?
Question - who should we be rooting for (assuming one is totally objective and ambivalent about the other teams playing) in games involving our past and future opponents this year, in order to maximize our poll standings?
Obviously, we want ND, FAU, and WMU to win as many games as possible to boost our strength of schedule (SOS). But what about games like UM vs. Iowa?
Should we root for Iowa, so that our game with them is a potential national showcase game, with 8-0 MSU vs. 7-1 Iowa? Or do we cheer for the Wolverines, so it makes our win against them look better? Is it better to beat two "good" teams, or 1 "great" team and 1 "OK" team?
Wisky vs. OSU - Obviously a Wisky win boosts our SOS for the computer polls, but for the human polls, would an OSU loss drag down the whole conference, as the voters might see the Big 10 as not having a national championship caliber squad?
What do you think?
