AFTERGLOW THREAD: MICHIGAN STATE 35, NORTHWESTERN 27
Well, that one took roughly eight years off of each of our lives, but -- WOW! B.J. Cunningham came up with one of the greatest catches any of us have ever seen, and MSU survives. 8-0!
Oh, and this is a questionable executive decision on my part, but epic victories need epic celebrations:
VICTORY FOR MSU!

I don't know that i have ever felt that range of emotion before
my whole body is in shock/pain
Good call on the Dance of Joy, IMO.
Down 17-0, 24-14 in the 4th, seems worthy for some DoJ action.
Hey! I'm tryin' to eat lunch here!
DANCE OF JOY!
for the fact that we are an Undefeated team, and each win is just taking us to heights we haven’t been to since 1966
For sure
I did my own version of a BJ-juggling-touchdown-catch-induced DoJ in my living room.

It probably shouldn't have
They had coverage only the DB turned the wrong way and created space. Huge call none-the-less
Not to mention
it’s at the 36 yard line, down 10 in the fourth quarter. If we had actually gone through with the punt there I would have been screaming for blood. I don’t care if it’s 4th and 11, you DO NOT PUNT inside the opposing 40 when trailing. And you only do it when leading if it’s very late in the game.
I think he heard someone yell "fake"
And looked back to see what was going on.

GREAT PLAY NAME
“cuz they take the cheese”
where do they come up with this stupid **** lol when naming plays?
Ooonst ooonst muthafucka!
Well we have a lot of things to improve on
but great by job by this team coming back from 17-0. We actually ended up covering the spread.
Baker's touchdown was definitely a "great moments in gambling" moment.

Try showing up for the first half next week. Iowa will not let that stand

I would do a Dance of Joy...
but I’m still kind of pissed about the hole we dug ourselves into.
We can’t pull this crap against Iowa next week and we can’t be a 2nd half team anymore.
And I quote: "Detroit Bad Boys is full of HOMOS ,JACKASSES and NON-sports fans" - ralphgoblue
Sorry for being a Debbie Downer
But I seriously wanted to choke someone because these guys were not playing to their full potential the first 30 minutes of this game.
And I quote: "Detroit Bad Boys is full of HOMOS ,JACKASSES and NON-sports fans" - ralphgoblue
Finally paying off
Having been through the great abandonment by that whore Nick Saban, the Bobby Williams gum sticking out of my mouth dazed and confused era and the JLS face slappingly embarassing years I can’t find a way to nitpick a team that wins the close game and takes us to 8-0.
I’m just. So. Pumped!!! Go green! We can worry about Iowa later, for now let’s just bask in the Spartan’s warm glowing warming glow.

In Sabans defense
I wouldve left for LSU too. He did it in a completely innapropriate way of course, I dont care how sick he was of getting little to no credit in the media, but remember he was constantly frustrated by the MSU administration.
I wish hed left on better terms, but I cant help looking back at Sabans days at State and the ’99 season reletively fondly.
Ooonst ooonst muthafucka!
Agreed
The way he left stung, but the administration did not step up when they should have. That man should have had a contract extension paying him big bucks well before he left. I’ll always love him for what he did at MSU, but I also think he’s a bit of a scum bag for the ever wandering eyes he’s demonstrated ever since he left East Lansing.

Not saying I hate the guy
but he is a total carpet bagger. It wasn’t just us he left abruptly when something better came along. On the plus side we probably wouldn’t have Dantonio now if Saban hadn’t hired him.
by TheCrestedHelm on Oct 25, 2010 6:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Saban...
…is kinda a tool for leaving, but that’s kinda hating the playa and not the game. He’s certainly not the only one.
Nick Saban certainly didn’t force MSU to hire Bobby Williams without a real coaching search and he didn’t make Bobby run the program into the ditch, either.

gr8 game.
This was a miracle victory.WOW..I just threw up my lunch. I have so much adrenaline I might just go and run 10 miles…Boy gutsy drive by Kirk Cousins and MSU offense..gr8 Cunningham catch. Also the think on Little Giants 2 or Mousetrap, was that we ook a delay of game penalty and then called the fake.Ice in the veins for Coach Dantonio.I need the defrib right now.
But, we can not pull this hole against Iowa. We will be buried. I thought MSU team was looking forward to next week in the first half.
Here's the thing
I had CONFIDENCE! Not crazy koolaid drinking stupidness. But even when things were looking bad early I thought “plenty of time left. The old spartans people want to write about don’t exist anymore. These guys can turn it around.”
Did thee fourth quarter cost me 11 out of 10 fingernails? sure. Can they do the same thing about Iowa? Wouldn’t bet on it. But that doesn’t matter. They survived a pair of games they played poorly during and they hit the reset button and regroup and start over 0-0 against Iowa with an 8-0 record.
Good enough for me.
In Dantonio I trust!

Dantonio's half time talk
with the media made me feel very confident. His demeanor calmed my nerves for a little while at least when he calmly said, “We’ll be alright.” These players trust in their coach and so do I. And now for statement I’ve only dreamed of typing until now: BCS or Bust!

I almost forgot the fumble
We are a team of destiny or was it pure luck. Cousins fumbles the ball during the last drive down by 6..and he gets hit. I do not know if Stipek or Foreman recovered, but that is the break that teams need to win a big ten championship. We got it baby!!!
Man, this is new territory for us. We have to fix a lot of things before we go to Iowa, including our offensive line which did not have a great game.
I thought the defense was fired up in the second half, especially Worthy.
Worthy was an absolute beast in the second half.
His bull rush was dominant, and it played a huge factor making Persa uncomfortable in the 4th
What an incredible comeback performance
For as awful as that first half was, this team really stepped it up and got it done, pure and simple.
And I never really lost hope. I was surely concerned, but I was well aware we always had a chance.
I’m believing in you guys. And I love it.
Keyshawn Martin?
Does anyone know if Keyshawn is good enough to return against Iowa?
By the way Iowa’s offensive line looks like a beast…after scoring the TD against wisconsin.
I talked to someone "in the know" about Key
He injured his Achilles, but they don’t know if it’s ruptured or not. He looked VERY gimpy walking to the locker room before the half.
On the plus side, Fowler has been pushing Key for playing time in practice, and was gonna see the field today even before Key went down

I was at my son's basketball tryouts watching the first half on my Blackberry
People were looking at me kind of funny. I must have been cussing a little louder than under my breath.
A ton of credit to Northwestern. They played the uptempo spread to perfection in the first half. I think it was OTE and LTP commenter Chadnudj that suggested the wet track might help NU more than MSU, and he was right. MSU’s run game looked sloppy because the OL and RBs couldn’t get traction for the zone stretches and cutbacks, plus NU did a great job with run blitzes and slants and linebacker play.
Fortunately, both the MSU offense and defense made adjustments in the second half.
And how about that delay of game to sell the Mousetrap, huh? Giant, massive stones.
NU was pretty impressive. If they can bring that level of play all the time, they are an 8-win or even 9-win team.
And I’ll admit, I was yelling at Baker to go down after getting the first. But credit to the D for getting it back to finish the game. This team is finding ways to win games they would have found ways to lose, in the past. Regardless of what happens next week, it’s been a heck of a ride.
by CPT Hoolie on Oct 23, 2010 3:04 PM CDT via mobile reply actions 1 recs
So nice, he had to say it twice
What about Cunningham – ball was on a string! Moron commentators: “Baker may have scored too quickly”
Yeah, stupid mobile browser.
Well, obviously MSU had confidence in the special teams and defense to finish it off after the Baker score. Huge, huge INT for Gordon.
I think they...
…were maybe right.
If he kneels at the one, we gotta execute two or three kneeldowns and we win, rather than giving NU the ball. It’s a tiny chance either way.
I wonder if Dantonio discussed it with them during the TO.
by witless chum on Oct 25, 2010 6:01 AM CDT up reply actions
The kind of game...
…that happens during a special season. Pure and simple. Everything went wrong in the first half: 20 yard run on the first play from scrimmage called back for holding, not converting 2 third and 1 plays, NU fumbles but ruled incomplete and not even reviewed, Conroy misses first kick of HIS CAREER, ‘Queze gets hurt and NU converts a 3rd and 18 when his replacement (Mitchell White) loses his assignment, Rock loses the rock for our first turnover in, like, forever, biggest weapon Keshawn goes down and doesn’t return, DJ Young goes down, and NU moves the ball at will. To overcome all that, to keep fighting, and to show some serious cajones in the 4th quarter is maybe the best statement about a team. A team that is now smack dab in the middle of a seriously special season.

DOJ, the world seems right again after a FB win.
Biggie: Kirk “Captain Cool” Cousins. This obviously goes nowhere without him, great job today on the quicker routes, even if he still holds on to the ball too long at times.
Dantonio's on his sideline
All’s right with the world
Hoovers forced fumble at the 1 yard line may have saved our season
Yeah, Northwestern was still able to get up 17-0, but it could have been an even bigger deficit.
O-line Blues
Was it just me or was Cousins running for his life the entire game? Has our O-line regressed that much? We def need to get our shit together before Iowa in that regard. I’d like to suggest a slappy for O-line and a Biggie for Keith Nichol’s two 3rd and long receptions.
Great win today though!
by Bealstreetgreen on Oct 23, 2010 3:58 PM CDT reply actions
You're not wrong
O-Line has ranged from mediocre to bad the last two games. I would say part or the problem is Treadwell calling all kinds of play action with no run game. When we have been stuffed repeatedly, nobody is getting fooled and Cousins is getting hammered.
The offensive line played much better in the second half then the first
But, the fact remains, it was because they played so poorly as a unit in the first half that any sort of moderately competent performance could be labeled as an ‘improvement’.
Playcalling
I like Treadwell a lot, but I think his early play calling is way too conservative. Our struggles the last two weeks can be tied to the offense’s inability to sustain drives.
Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude
Well in his defense
We were supposed to be able to run on them. Their rushing D had looked bad to date and our running game was (until the past two weeks) pretty impressive.

stupid SEC announcers
LSU vs Auburn game – just had the same clock issue as our ND game – play clock is at zero, then the snap (but within the “gap” for the back judge to check the clock and then check the snap).
announcers obviously think the flag should’ve been thrown, don’t act really too sure on the rule, either.

Wisconsin
We control our own destiny, but in tie breakers Iowa has already lost a game to Arizona. Therefore, if we all finish (MSU, UW, Iowa) 7-1 in the Big 10 then Iowa will be eliminated from the tiebreaker for being 10-2 while MSU and UW are 11-1. Then we win the tiebreaker of head to head against Wisconsin. Of course if Iowa doesn’t beat OSU then the 3 way tie is between us, UW and OSU in which case I’m not as sure on the tie breakers, but I think since we haven’t played OSU and our overall records would be identical then it goes to BCS standings.

Iowa win would probably have been better if you're thinking NC
As we’d have the chance to make an enormous statement next week (it’ll still be big, and if top teams keep falling that might be enough, but if there’s still a logjam at the top the extra hype on Iowa might have been key). But for winning the Big Ten, Wisconsin was definitely the better result – now as long as Iowa beats OSU and Wisconsin doesn’t blow one down the stretch (their toughest remaining game is either Michigan or NW), we can lose to Iowa and still go Rose Bowlin’. If OSU beats Iowa, BCS standings would be the tiebreaker, in which case OSU losing early instead of late and starting the preseason polls higher would probably give them the edge.
I love the fact
that John Clay has a TD in 13 of 14 games – and we were the team that held him to less than 100 yards and NO touchdowns.

Wisconsin looks much better now than earlier in the season. Although on second thought, they looked good earlier too, except for the game when they played MSU. Hmmm, maybe this Spartan team is actually really good.

Back from the game
Two things:
That game took eight years off my life also,
and seeing B.J. Cunningham make that miraculous catch in the end zone in the 4th quarter will rank up there as one of the most ecstatic moments of my life.
Anyone watching Wiscy and Iowa?
Great game going on right now. Wisconsin just took a 1 point lead with a minute left.
Good news for next week per Rexrode
“Pat Narduzzi said Pickelman and Treadwell should be back next week at Iowa. Keshawn Martin was assuring teammates that he’ll be back next week, too. If not, it’s not like Bennie Fowler can’t make some plays.”
Part of the reason we didn’t play the run well was missing those two big guys inside.
21-3
That’s the score of today’s 4th quarter.
Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new & greatly improved Spartans.
GO GREEN!!!
wow
Wiscy beats Iowa, two huge wins in a row for the Badgers. It’s all setting up perfectly for MSU.

Very impressive win by Wisconsin
They played almost the whole game with out White, Kendricks, Toon and their starting center yet still won.
So, is MSU's player of the week streak broken?
I figure it’s either Cousins for OPotW or Bates as STPotW if the streak is to continue.
Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude
The rest of the story on the fake punt
As it turned out, MSU was baiting the trap with its whole fourth-down charade. The Spartans had noticed on tape that NU junior cornerback Jordan Mabin, when he guarded gunners in "safe punt" situations, would chuck his man for about 10-15 yards and then peel toward the sideline to avoid having the coffin-corner punt bounce off him.
So, on fourth-and-11 following the delay penalty, punter Aaron Bates lined up deep and MSU gunner Bennie Fowler (No. 13) lined up wide right in his usual gunner position. Northwestern kept its regular defense on the field just in case Michigan State tried something funny, but it turned out the visitors only needed to fool one guy.
Just as the Spartans figured, Mabin chucked Fowler for several yards and then headed toward the sideline to avoid disaster. That explains why Mabin couldn’t find the ball and went in a circle as Bates lobbed a pass downfield to Fowler for a 21-yard gain and first down.

High five to the coaching staff for doing their home work.
I was initially so pissed when lined up to punt the ball then I did the dance of joy once Bates hit Fowler.
i've never played organized football
so maybe i’m making too big a deal of this, but that strikes me as damn impressive to pick up on something like that and then exploit it. wow.
