THE ONLY PODCAST #1: MGOBLOG AND MAIZE N BREW
Our podcast guests, in happier times.
For those of you wondering if we'd be rolling out new features for the biggest football week of the year: wonder no more. The first-ever episode of The Only Podcast (presumptuous because we can!) is now available for your listening pleasure. Pete and I go over the finer points of the Wisconsin game, and then we bring on our two guests: we discuss the Michigan team with Brian Cook of the famous mgoblog, and then we talk some more about the Michigan defense and the importance of this game with our fellow SBNation blogger Dave, from Maize n Brew. Total running time is a shade under 54 minutes.
Since this is our first try at podcasting, we're eager to get your feedback. Also, it'll take a little while before we're listed on iTunes, so for now, you can listen here or download the podcast in mp3 format through the link below. Enjoy.

Very disappointed in the lack of singing :)
More seriously: The point about UM having an effective extra blocker on Denard running plays is a good/scary one. I’m becoming less convinced that MSU can limit the UM offense any more than previous opponents have (although, as others have pointed out, that still means UM may only score on 50% of its drives). More realistic hope is that UM finally coughs the ball up a few times.
Alternately, it may simply come down to the MSU offense executing even more efficiently and without turnovers.

Notre Dame
Did force them into 10 punts and except for the big 87-yard run they did passably well containing Robinson. If MSU could match this effort, and it seems plausible that they could, the offense has a decent shot of besting the 28 points UM put up against ND. I almost wish they did have an FG kicker as it’s somewhat troublesome to imagine them going for it, as Brian says in the podcast, on everything except 4th and goal.
re: Notre Dame
Notre Dame is also the only school to hold Michigan to a scoreless quarter (3rd). I think the ND Defense did an ok job and just ended up being gassed at the end. MgoVideo has the entire offensive highlights from the ND game and it seems like he passed a lot more than I remember from the game.
One thing I hope we can steal from the ND DL is getting the hands up to try and block/tip Denard throws.

On the offensive execution note
I like the sound of this:
This, like Odoms sitting way down in the hole, is a pass that takes advantage of cover two. The sideline 15-20 yards downfield is always a weak spot. Not a lot of quarterbacks can exploit that as ruthlessly as Chappell can, though in this instance it’s so open a lot of QBs could make the play.
Throwing to the sideline 15-20 yards downfield could also be described as “Kirk Cousins’ bread and butter,” no?

I'd say yes
Most of the UM fans seem to think that Chappell is by far the best QB they’ll face this season. They may be correct, but right now Cousins has a higher passer rating then Chappell even though Indiana has played an easier schedule. If UM can’t stop the pass against Indiana when they know it’s coming, what are they going to do with an equally (or more) effective QB with a vastly superior run game?
To your other point KJ, I’m also getting more worried as the week goes on about our ability to slow down Denard. The two James White runs where he jumped outside and used his speed to score TD’s scared me when thinking about what Denard could do.
UM fan here (easy, put away the torches and pitchforks for a minute)
I don’t know if the majority of us would consider Chappell to be “by far the best QB” we will face this season, but there’s no way Cousins (or anyone else) drops back to pass 50+ times like Chappell did. Chappell has been deemed the “best” QB Michigan will face based on the sheer volume of pass attempts (and thus, completions) he had.
The general consensus among UM fans seems to be that we’re OK with teams running the ball against us. While not dominant, Michigan’s rush defense is ranked 37th in the country despite their near-triple digit total defense rank. Granted, they haven’t seen a rushing attack anywhere near MSU’s, so we’ll see how that plays out.
Either way, this game should be a shootout. So, knowing this rivalry, it will be a defensive struggle that goes down to the final possession.
That picture is awesome
I’ll check out the podcast after work.
Objective predictions?
This sort of started in the “Next Up:” entry, but how about a fresh post where we put in our predictions for Saturday’s outcome?
Tonight's going to be a good night.
