Saturday Football Open Thread
Your Spartans have a well-deserved week off, and yield to a rather boring slate of games in the Big Ten. My picks are right here, but MSU clearly has to hope for some upsets this week. Here's the conference schedule:
- Noon ET: Iowa at Northwestern (ESPN)
- Noon ET: Indiana at Wisconsin (ESPN2)
- Noon ET: Michigan at Purdue (BTN)
- Noon ET: Minnesota at Illinois (BTN)
- 3:30 ET: Penn State at Ohio State (ABC)
Wins by Northwestern and especially Penn State would help MSU immensely in the quest for Pasadena. Whether they'll happen is another question entirely. Your full slate of games is after the jump. I'll be dropping by from time to time; feel free to discuss any and all of the games here.

U of M!
They squeak by every dang week even against some of the terrible division II teams they have played like UMASS. I think Michigan is maybe the worst team in the big ten because they can’t legitimately beat anyone!
Yes!
NW just helped MSU out a ton! Hopefully Iowa shows up next Saturday the way they showed up after their last loss…
WOOOOOOO
Remember the wreckage that was MSU-Iowa? Yea, that was after Iowa lost to Wisconsin…
BEAT THOSE BUCKEYES!
This kid down the street, I think his name is Denard, keeps throwing footballs at me when I wear my Michigan State jersey...I just don't get it!
That is unreal...
In retrospect – how on earth did MSU beat them? After Illinois lost to Minnesota that is looking like MSU’s only quality win so far this season.
Northwestern and Michigan wins
Aren’t looking too shabby either, especially since they were on the road.

Still not sure how we beat Wisky.
I’m not very optimistic about beating Penn State in what will probably be Joe Pa’s last home game.

After what I just saw of McGloin
I’m less worried. It seems possible, perhaps even probable, that the offensive revival they had was due to playing Minnesota and NW.
It won’t be easy, but I think we can and should win.

+1
PSU started out strong against OSU, but two pick-sixes and halftime adjustments by OSU have allowed OSU to score 28 unanswered points in the second half.
Um...because MSU is good?
MSU is the only top ten team that Wisconsin has played on the road. That’s how we beat them.
In conference play, definitely.
They might have a game against someone like Alcorn State and hang 90 up, but in conference they won’t break 80.

Iowa loses!
That is what we needed.Iowa losing to NW. Dan Persa led an epic comeback to throw the hawkeyes out of big ten bowl game for now. As far as MSU is concerned we need to put Purdue down on senior day and turn our target to Happy Valley. I am sure Coach D is pointing out the fact that we could have had a share of B10 championship 2 yrs ago and they lost big. We will be fine.
GO GREEN!
oops..I meant Iowa is out of B10 championship.

Iowa's not out yet
They are hoping to beat OSU, and have MSU lose to PSU, and Wisky lose to NU. Then there’s a 2-loss multi-way logjam.
For that matter, there's the three-loss DEATH scenario even if the OSU score holds up
We lose twice, Wisconsin loses twice, Iowa beats OSU but loses to Minn, OSU loses twice.

What is this?
“How did we beat Wisconsin?” Come on… we’re a good football team. We imposed our will on offense (most importantly a 8+ minute 15 play drive in the 4th quarter), made big plays on defense and special teams. It was not even close to a fluke win. [/rant]
Impressive blowout, but Indiana is winless in the B10 for a reason.
A triple of things...
Penn State seems to have awakened. Either that or OSU isn’t quite the powerhouse they were cracked up to be.
Persa was injured on NU’s winning TD play. It looked like a torn Achilles based on the fact that he landed strangely and not on anyone much the same way KL did last March and David Beckham did for AC Milan last January, or was it February? Has anyone seen any reports on the injury? The ESPN dopes don’t seem to have anything on it yet.
If Illinois lit UM up for 65 how many will Wisconsin put up next week? Will Bielma go for the century? If he does, will it be the end of RichRod?
Revised rooting interest
With Iowa taking a loss, we now hate Wisconsin again since if they lose we’re in excellent position for an at large.
Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude
More important to hate Ohio State.
If that happens, we don’t even need to hate Wisconsin.

Whats the tiebreaker situation look like now?
I read that Mich St needs to win out from here…but I figured they needed Ohio St to lose.
If OSU is involved, it goes to BCS standings
If it’s just us and Wisconsin, Pasadena here we come.

Yes please.

So essentially I was correct...
Cause if it goes to the BCS, Mich St wont get the nod. Theres a reason Wisconsin poured it on more than they needed to earlier on Indiana. Hopefully Iowa whips Ohio St.

105 points allowed in the last 2 games after allowing 134 in the first 8 games.
