I was just flippin' thru the channels and came across the Duke-Princeton bball game. As I watched I noticed some empty seats in the upper levels of Cameron Indoor Stadium. It got me to thinking about the shots Spartans fans have taken recently regarding attendance in both football and basketball. These shots have come from the media (both in print and on the radio), which shouldn't surprise anyone. But they've also come from plenty of people wearing green and white. That is surprising. Dantonio was asked about the empty seats after the Minnesota game. He gave a reasonably understanding answer. He also pointed out that we've had solid attendance for a long time now.I don't have any figures on attendance but if he said that to a room full of reporters, those who love to call attention to others being wrong, and hasn't been roasted for it yet, I believe him. I also know, from many years of attending MSU games, that we are an incredibly supportive and passionate fanbase. Over the years we haven't had the best football program to support, yet I'd say we've been pretty good to it.
I honestly don't see what's so horrible about not selling out for a game against Minnesota that takes place on a cold saturday at noon. Sorry, I just don't. Nor do I see anything horrible about a lack of interest in playing Florida International at Ford Field. Driving to both locations is not quick for most MSU fans. Parking at both locations isn't cheap for anyone. Neither are concessions. If one has a family it's not the easiest thing to take up an entire saturday for a football game. Admonishing adults for not dropping everything on their plates for games against Minnesota or Florida International and not dropping upwards of hundreds of dollars to do so is weak and stupid.
Yes, many of the seats at the Brez were empty the other night for Eastern. Just like there are many empty seats at Camron Indoor for Princeton. Anyone want to claim Duke fans suck?...........Didn't think so. Spartan fans represented strong this year in Ann Arbor. We take over Crisler arena annually (that place has never sold out by the way, yet the Detroit sports media will have you believe Ann Arbor is a colleg sprots mecca). Downtown Detroit was a sea of green during the 2009 Final Four (Jim Nantz went on record on how impressed he was). If you see empty seats at the Brez for Purdue, Illinois, or that s.o.b Bo Ryan's team, let me know. If Spartan Stadium has empty seats for Notre Lame, Penn St, or that team that's trying to confuse other teams by not playing defense, let me know. Until then, recognize a real fanbase when you see one. And if you're one the fellow "fans" giving others a hard time about this, check yourself.
