Derrick Nix Not Traveling to Maui Due to Personal Reasons
Perhaps we'll hear some tactful explanations on this soon. I hope it's nothing too serious for Derrick personally nor his future as a Spartan. Izzo did say that he is not suspended.

Sounds like he's unhappy about playing time...

Not surprising given his quotes before the start about the season how he wanted to be the player on the MSU team that everyone was talking about.
Sad to see him go if true — but at this point I’d be happier to see more PT to let Payne develop than having it go to a big man who can’t finish around the hoop or hit FTs when he is fouled trying to score. Maybe Gauna isn’t going to redshirt after all now?
Wow
I can’t even imagine what that dynamic is like. I don’t want to speak too hastily but if they came to mutual agreement that it’s a good idea he not go to Maui, that does not bode well.
Nope - it doesn't.
I kind of liked the kid — like that he was confident. Have gotten the feeling from reading his quotes/listening to him (and watching him play for that matter) – that he thinks his skill set is far more advanced than they actually are at the moment. Shame if he leaves as he seemed like he could be a beast if he put in the work and polished off his post moves.

All of the players that I spoke with seemed very surprised when they heard Nix would not be making the trip
That's a good sign
…I hope

Is Nix being...
Unrealistic? This is the guy that was positive Chris Allen was coming back. Maybe he and Izzo aren’t on the same page about a lot of stuff…
It’s only been two regular season games, and SC was a fast paced/terrible free throw shooting night, the worst possible combo for Nix. If he isn’t willing to go to Maui and try to earn more playing the situation might always be out of hand. Izzo has always said takes a while to find what rotations work.
I hope he sticks around and isn’t being pressured from people on the outside to leave. I was looking forwards to the Pershing Nix/Appling chemistry.

Interesting Decision Making
If Nix hopes to earn more playing time, missing three games at the beginning of the season when the rotation is being set, does not appear to bode well for him. Team chemistry doesn’t benefit when a player is feeling down about his playing time and carries that baggage around.
Hopefully this comes to some sort of conclusion sooner rather than later.
surprised
for me, this is surprising considering how passionate he was about having izzo return. He was the only player at the izo rally, and was almost in tears. Nix was the last guy I’d think would run into a situation like.
I agree with this
I saw him at the Izzo rally. He talked about how Izzo had been a mentor to him and how much he loved him.
Maybe it’s a sign that he is kind of an emotional kid that is letting his frustration take over for him right now.
This is so strange.

This is weird
Kid goes from starting on a Final 4 team as a freshman to possibly transferring 2 games into his sophomore year because of playing time? Doesn’t seem right. It’s not like Sherman and Payne have locked down their minutes – plenty of PT still up for grabs. IF true, it definitely has the markings of unrealistic expectations/outside influences.

Was hoping
This would be his year to put in solid work and lead into next year as a Big Ten beast alongside Sherman and Green in the post.
Technical issue
I’m pretty sure playing just two games means Nix has burned a year of eligibility. Here’s the NCAA on the subject:
Generally, NCAA rules say that any competition in a season — regardless of the amount of time — counts as having played a season in that sport. If you play any time during a season, regardless of how long you played, it counts as having played for an entire season in that sport. Your season of competition starts when you spend one second in competition on the field, court, gym or track.Since you have to spend an entire academic year at your new school before you can play, a transfer would effectively cost Nix two years of eligibility. That would be a pretty radical move if it is being contemplated. Wonder if something else is going on.
Right
Unless someone on the team wants to take a baton to a limb so he can apply for a medical redshirt, that’s right.
As for the transfer, I believe if he transferred right now successfully to somewhere on a quarter system, he would be eligible at the end of Fall quarter next year. He’d play a lot earlier than if he transferred to somewhere on semesters. I’ve seen quarter schools (cough Ohio) attract late transfer players (cough number two Armon Basset) due to this “loophole.”
I'm wondering if this is a large part of what Izzo is up to.
From Comp:
For MSU and Izzo (and nix), the best thing for all would be if Nix reacts to jet leaving for Maui without him same way Mo Pete did as frosh
Hondo Carpenter at SpartanNation saw this coming
He says he knows ALL the non-juicy details… and will only spill them if he transfers. It seems pretty convenient he is being so vague about what’s up.

Still boggles my mind...
that a guy who publishes something with the phrase ‘point will be mute’ in it actually gets inside access to MSU sports programs.
Pet peeve of mine
moot |moōt|
adjective • having no practical significance, typically because the subject is too uncertain to allow a decision : it is moot whether this phrase should be treated as metaphor or not.
That's exactly why Hondo gets access
He pretty much toes the company line, and holds “inside” info until he gets the OK to release it. I don’t know if that’s good or bad- I can see both sides

Bah, Hondo
He did this with Chris Allen – said he’d divulge details of why he was so confident on Allen transferring only in the unlikely event that Chris stayed. Who knows; maybe this is a sure sign Nix will return.
I really hope this works out the right way. Nix has all the stuff to be a big time fan favorite. He’s probably bent to find out he’s still not there yet after working so hard on his conditioning and 19 year kids don’t often handle things like that very well. He’s close with Green and from that rally appearance I gather he’s close with Izzo too.
Big D, you belong at Michigan State University. It’s not always a day at the beach, but whatever the problem is you’ve got the ability and support system to get through it. Stay with us and don’t leave until you’ve kissed the emblem at center court.
This sounds more positive...
I read it and it appeared that Izzo was about to say that he didn’t expect Nix to leave, then pulled back. Might just be me.
Take your time, Nixer.
Huh, interesting last bit
Which I hadn’t seen yet, re: Gauna. Kind of sounds like Izzo is open still to removing the redshirt if he thinks it’s necessary to make the team better and compete for a championship this year. Obviously, if Nix does leave it becomes an even stronger likelihood.
Tendencies
After reading Izzo’s comments, I was reminded to step back for a minute and understand that Nix is trying to figure out how he fits in and how his reality compares to what his dreams may be. Being 19 years old means he has a limited perspective in which to weigh (no pun intended) his options. As fans, it is easy to see things in a black and white way – is this going to be good for the team in the long run or not. Nix needs to figure out what is going to be best for him in the long run. Hopefully he is seeking council with some adults who can help him see the big picture. Maybe he gets on that plane and allows things to slow down a little for him. Or maybe a few days away from the team will provide him with enough perspective to make a considered decision. I wish him well. He appears to be a quality guy.
