[Bump. Arnett is an excellent wide receiver prospect from Saginaw; MSU has been recruiting him for a very long time. Other schools involved are U-M, Tennessee, USC, and Cal. This is a big announcement. --LVS.]

Looks like DeAnthony Arnett is ready to announce his choice of school this week.

Kind of unfortunate

That he just visited UoM and it was for the Illinois game, the most fun game to be a Michigan receiver in, well, ever.

Fingers crossed...

…that he goes Green.

Although I have this little voice nagging at me that Arnett would be the second coming of Andre Rison, with all that entailed (both good and bad).

Not too hopeful

On the Spartan Nation message board someone asked Hondo Carpenter directly what our chances were. Hondo flatly said “not good” and then mentioned there were some things going on in the background.

I just know that when Hondo says something about a high profile recruit, he’s right. He said the same thing with the big time D player that we lost to Penn State last year (forgot his name), Austin White, and more.

I would be shocked if Arnett went anywhere other than USC.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see Arnett in Green & White, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I just moved to southern cal

and before moving here, I wondered why any midwest football player would ever pass up a USC scholarship. After visiting the USC campus and going to the USC Oregon game, I understand why.

While the Collisuem is a great place for a game and the USC campus is really nice, the atmosphere at the game and the city surrounding the campus leaves something to be desired. I grew up seeing campuses like MSU’s, Michigan’s, and Wisconsin’s – big, safe campuses tucked into modestly sized cities – cities that obsess over their schools. USC, on the other hand, is a small campus tucked into a not-so-nice area of Los Angeles – only a portion of which cares about USC. Yes, there are palm trees, but most of them are inside of the heavily gated/guarded campus, while car dealerships and fast food restuarants line the busy streets surrounding the campus.

I don’t meant to rag on USC here – it’s a great school, don’t get me wrong. Plus, it was 80 degrees on halloween… I’m just saying that after going there, I could see why a midwest player may pass up a scholarship, just in case any other TOC readers are as afraid of a USC offer as I used to be. Of course, Arnett may not agree with me on this at all. I have no insight there.

Grant and Zettel

I see that most of the people commenting seem to think that Arnett will not go to state so what are the chances of them getting either Anthony Zettel or Doran Grant?

by mkstock28 on Nov 9, 2010 3:41 PM CST reply actions

It's been...

…conventional wisdom that MSU was Arnett’s leader for a long time and it’s just recently switched, based on the RCMB recruiting chatter. I’m not sure we should give up hope based on Hondo.

The, again, conventional wisdom on Zettel is that he wants to go to U of M, but is scared by Rich Rod’s various struggles. The idea is that he’s such a big Michigan fan that he’d unlikely to choose his favorite school’s despised rival if he doesn’t go Blue. Penn State and Iowa are also possibilities.

Grant has been talked about as basically 60 percent chance OSU/40 percent chance MSU. I don’t know how informed that percentage is, but it seems we’re still alive for him.

Streamed on MLive

Sorry, I didn’t find the link until late and got there just in time to watch him pull out a VOLS hat.

How many more scholarships does MSU have to give?

If I read it right, MSU has 96 on scholarship now (?), is losing 16 to graduation, already has 16 commits…

What am I missing?

by CPT Hoolie on Nov 9, 2010 4:21 PM CST reply actions

You must not be reading it right.

Can’t have more than 85 on scholarship. What the right way to read it is, I don’t know.

Trying to find the link

The freep ran a story a while back about the potential impact MSU’s (at the time) undefeated season could be having on recruiting. The article talked about how they had already signed 16 recruits and were now focusing on a handful of players for their remaining 4 or 5 spots in this class. I can’t find the link, but I believe they have 7-8 higher level targets they are trying to lock up with their remaining spots. At least that was the tone of the article that I remember

by trivialstuff16 on Nov 9, 2010 7:37 PM CST up reply actions

Found the correct number

The Scout chart I was looking at before must include all players, not just scholarship.

According to this chart on SpartanTailgate.com, there are 81 players currently on scholarship. Losing 13 Seniors, got 13 so far in the 2011 class. 4 left to play with.

I think others have mentioned

That he seems to enjoy playing around on twitter. Don’t know why a kid would call a press conference and then announce it this way over twitter. We’ll see what happens

by trivialstuff16 on Nov 9, 2010 8:38 PM CST up reply actions

No

He’s clearly making a mockery of the entire thing. The kid loves the attention, that’s for sure.

My guess is that he’s going to post one of these videos switching to Cal next.

Then another switching to UT.

Then announce tomorrow night that he’s going to play at MSU.

But you don’t wear an OSU sweatshirt in your video to announce you’re going to UM. And you don’t say that Lane Kiffin is the greatest coach ever and reminds you of Jimmy Johnson. Or that Denard Robinson is going to win the Heisman. All while some idiot is screaming how it’s a monumental decision in the background and playing the whole thing up for drama. Not if you want people to take you seriously anyway.

All that being said, the more he turns this into an attention getting circus the less I care if he picks MSU.

by SpartanBill on Nov 9, 2010 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Oh c'mon, it's not an attention-starved kid

It’s just someone who appreciates he’s in a position to make people sweat. A position that, given everything, really shouldn’t exist to the level of seriousness that people treat it with.

I say he should take advantage of it to the fullest!

by cwel87 on Nov 10, 2010 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

I understand

And the more I saw of the videos the more it grew on me. He’s obviously making fun of the entire process and I can appreciate that. The process that he’s mocking in a ridiculous one, so I can’t fault him for that. He does clearly love the attention though.

That being said he’s obviously also very confident, and that’s a great trait for a WR.

We’ll see tonight.

He named...

….Grambling as his leader at one point, according to RCMBers who follow him on Twitter. I kinda like his antics.

by witless chum on Nov 10, 2010 5:40 AM CST up reply actions

He's been treating this recruitment like a game all along

messing with all of us adults* who freak out over the decisions of 17 and 18 year old guys.

Good for him

for making a mockery of a truly outrageous cottage industry.

Of course in the south, where this stuff is like a religion, he could get deified, & subsequently cruxified, by rabid fan bases in one fell swoop.

by MSUDersh on Nov 10, 2010 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Really...

His loss. He will miss out on the amazing games we will be playing in and the national spotlight he would gain by playing in them.

GO GREEN!!!!!!!!
