MSU vs. Michigan Tech in GLI third place game. 4:05pm today

In a fitting match-up for this season the last place Michigan Tech Huskies from the WCHA take on our Spartans, who are currently in 10th place in the 11 team CCHA.  It goes without saying that this is a game that in any normal universe, the Spartans should and would win. More after the jump.

The Huskies have finished 4th in the four team tournament 13 times since 1985 and 7 times from 2000 to 2009 alone. MSU has won the tournament 4 times in that span but also finished last in lost year of 2007.

It should go with out saying that our low standing this season (although becoming a common occurrence under Comley) is somewhat unexpected or at the very least unacceptable. MTU's disappointing season happens more regularly as they have not won their conference (regular season or tourney) since 1976. Their last NCAA tourney appearance was 1981.

On paper it would seem that we should be the (slim) favorite in this game. Still MTU lost to UM yesterday by a count of 4-2 whereas UM drubbed us 5-0 in the Big Chill a few weeks back. MTU also has beaten a Minnesota (like we did). This one is probably too close to call.

My feelings on our head coach and the direction of the hockey program in general have been noted many times on this site. I won't rehash them. I will say that a last place finish in the GLI for the 2nd time in 4 years when we finished last only 2 times in our 34 prior appearances will certainly intensify the calls among the remaining fans of the team for Coach Comley to retire/resign/be fired.
