Open Thread: "Can both teams lose the same game?" Edition

Purdue at Ohio State.  6:30 p.m.  Big Ten Network.

This is kind of a big one, so we'll do a special edition game thread for a non-MSU game.  Regardless of the outcome, MSU will continue to technically control its own destiny for winning the league outright.  Logic would say we should pull for Ohio State, though, since we get the Buckeyes at home but have to play Purdue on the road.  An Ohio State win tonight would mean that an MSU win on Sunday would set things up to win at least a share of the conference title (barring Penn State or Michigan knocking us off at the Breslin Center).

Mr. Brennan has a solid preview of the game up, along with links to pregame material from the Purdue and Ohio State blogospheres.  The BTN's Brent Yarina, meanwhile, interviewed the folks from Boiled Sports and Eleven Warriors about their expectations going into the game (spoiler: they both think their boys are going to win).

Discuss away.

"Think I'll sing it again!"

As I just typed, if a share of the Big Ten title means Purdue beating OSU, MSU beating OSU, and MSU getting swept by Purdue, Purdue can have the title. They will have earned it. It’d be a tie with a giant psychological asterisk. I say root for Purdue. Let MSU have to run the table and take the outright number one spot into their own hands. @Purdue would be the biggest win of the year thus far. Let’s make it happen.

If Purdue didn't have Kramer, I might be okay with that.

The thought of Kramer on a #1 seeded team just makes me want to throw up. Go Bucks.

I like banners

Winning the thing outright is of course the ideal.

Sharing the title with a team that beat you twice is still a title.

And the fact our best player wasn’t 100% for the first game has to count for something.

I would not refuse to hang any banner

Of course, outright, with an win over each other team in conference, is the ideal.

Diebler Update

From Bob Baptist:

Just saw #Buckeyes’ Jon Diebler warming up. Right wrist and thumb are taped. Tape runs a couple of inches up his wrist.

Uh-oh

Bucks have NO bench.

I dislike OSU

But I like our chances of hanging a banner better if they win. If we get the most likely split, an OSU win tonight means a tie and a Purdue win means second place.

Lauderdale 78% from the floor?!

I guess that’s what happens when you never shoot any jumpers, only dunks and tip-ins.

Hummel scoreless

Purdue up by 12.

Turner needs some help here. And quickly.

So... first half teaches us a valuable lesson...

Entire Purdue Team > Evan Turner…. too bad nobody else on Ohio State suited up today.

We were up 13 at half in the first game, too.

So that’s just lovely.

On an unrelated note, I can’t wait until Turner is in the NBA with guys that are as athletic as him, and then we can watch his ONLY move (spin! spin! spin!) start to fail.

I can't decide who I want to win less

I guess we have a better shot at taking the OSU game so rooting for them to win would give us the best shot at a title, but I would really like to steal one in West Lafayette. That’s not very likely but it would be more gratifying than a tie for the title when they won both head-to-head matchups. Ideally we’ll win all our remaining games and win it outright.

Man...

Turner is good… absolutely carrying Ohio State… Purdue can do absolutely nothing to stop him.

shooting %

I’m not watching this one, just randomly checking the gametracker, but it sure seems like Purdue has started this one similar to when they played us in East Lansing – shooting lights out (2’s AND 3’s) for the 1st half.

by my2fish on Feb 17, 2010 6:48 PM CST reply actions

Yup...

Purdue sure as hell is able to get up for big games in a way that I can only fantasy about MSU doing. Came to play against OSU, MSU, and WVU and just look confident and hungry for the W.

Yeah

A lot of easy baskets around the hoop and clean 3-point looks, though. More good execution (and bad defense) than red-hot shooting.

OSU

has made a nice climb back into the game in the 2nd half

by my2fish on Feb 17, 2010 7:06 PM CST reply actions

Geeze...

Ohio state going to lose this cause they are just jacking up 3 after 3 after 3…

by MooTheKow on Feb 17, 2010 7:07 PM CST reply actions

Thad Matta = coaching fail...

nice timeout after getting the rebound on that blocked shot…

oh wait.. no – he just let them scramble and crossed his fingers.
