Now we are so shocked/relieved/happy . . .

. . . we do the Dance of Joy!

Michigan State 53, Purdue 44.  Game recap later.  A Big Ten title is within our sights--but still two games in the distance.

Raymar and Draymond are men.  Big, bad men.  Who would not be denied.

P.S. The USA couldn't pull out the gold medal, but Ryan Miller is your Olympic MVP.

With or Without Hummel

I say it’s our best win of the season thus far.

I know it’s absurd to be a fan swinging from inflated optimism to hyperbolic negativity but I am two games and one big-time B10 tournament performance away from believing MSU has as good a shot as anybody in a wide open NCAA Tournament. Let’s close this thing strong!

And hey, let’s celebrate the victory with a Branden Dawson verbal. C’mon dude, you don’t want to go there!

Saw him take three charges

One was a total flop, one was completely legit, one was probably legit but he definitely embellished it.

I only remember two, back to back.

I didn’t have a great angle on the offensive foul on Raymar, but that one was probably embellished.

One earlier in the game

Which Kellogg described as “he went down like he got shot”. Don’t remember who that was against.

May have missed a few while flipping back and forth between that and the hockey game, though.

The other

was an out of control Lucas driving and then dishing to Summers at the baseline. An offensive foul. 2 charges, 2 flops… Regardless, it’s just annoying to see it so frequently, IMO. Give Kramer credit.. he’s a gutsy, heads-up player and makes things happen.

Poor memory

But I remember thinking the Lucas one looked distinctly legit. Was that the unequivocal one? I remember thinking Lucas just ran him over.

by intrpdtrvlr on Feb 28, 2010 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Lucas was completely out of control and barreled into him as he passed. Zero argument with that one. The Morgan one before was debatable, and the first one I saw (first half, I think) was a total flop, but the Lucas one was unarguably a charge.

Easy, easy

Now both of you write

“I will not misspell embarrassment.” 100 times on the board.

I was quoting him, doesn’t count.

Nice timing.

The unofficial end of this basketball season caused me to change my avatar a few minutes ago.

In fairness

I can’t imagine how bad losing Hummel must suck. OSU, MSU, NW, WISC, and others have had serious injuries issues concerning their best players throughout the season that have hampered everyone’s year but this is probably the worst.

I don’t want to go schmaltzy, but it’s not over. It’s a new challenge. The tournament field is wide open and magic can happen. It’s time for Moore and Johnson to step up. They play at 110% and Purdue is as good as anybody.
At least, that’s what I’d tell a discouraged Boilermaker.

But if you, uh, want to go ahead and lose to Indiana or Penn State, that’s cool too.

It's pretty weird that each of the top 4 Big Ten teams had an injury to their best player this year.

I’m not too bummed about sharing the conference championship because of that. The fact that this injury is season ending at right before the tournament is the really crappy part.

It might not be over, but at this point I’m just going to go ahead and assume it is because I can’t handle any more disappointment this year. After game 163 and then losing Rob to another freak injury, I’m about to lose it. Anything more than a first-round NCAA win I’m just going to consider a bonus. In the meantime, I’ll trick myself into being happy that this will pretty much guarantee that all three of them will be back next year.

I suppose I'm looking for shared optimism

Because if MSU is a 4 seed, I’m not betting my life savings that they see the Sweet Sixteen. Of course, they could throw it in my face and make a deep run. But so could Purdue.

Our conference all-hospital team

Is on par with most all-conference teams. (Heck, it might be our all-conference team.)

by SpartanDan on Feb 28, 2010 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

What a line-up!

Lucas, Turner, Hummel, Coble, and Leuer is a legitimate squad that could match-up against just about anyone in the country.

Just because someone doesn't root for MSU

doesn’t mean that they’re not welcome here.

Yeah!

“cause we’re classy like that.

Add one more big, bad man

I thought Derrick Nix showed a little break through today. He looked pretty good out there, both physically and basketball-wise. Made me think that he is following in Draymond’s footsteps a bit, as far as starting to play like a soph at the end of his frosh year.

I liked what I saw!

by GreenMitt on Feb 28, 2010 5:52 PM CST reply actions

So true

Nix really looked good. If he starts to turn things on in the next few games, the size issue becomes less of a problem.

by TMadison25 on Feb 28, 2010 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

For sure

but I imagine it’s an off-season conditioning program that’s really going to take Nix to the next level. I think his role this season will still be pretty limited. This could be a high-water mark.

Great win, fellas

I saw it today in person. You wanted it more. Good job.

Thanks

Purdue fans seem to be a pretty classy bunch on the whole. Unfortunately, it looks like our rubber match would have to be Saturday instead of Sunday in the BT tourney (assuming the top three win out, OSU would be the 1 seed at 2-1 against us, you’d be the 2, we’d be the 3). A fourth round doesn’t seem especially likely anymore, sadly – both of us looked a lot more likely to make Indy a few weeks ago than we do now – but I hope it happens.

would have been a great game with Humell but still great game.
