As of 4pm Wednesday, nothing more on MSU guard Kalin Lucas' ankle injury. The team arrived back in Lansing in the wee hours of the morning after Tuesday's 67-49 loss at Wisconsin. Lucas had classes scheduled-- don't know if he made any or not. MSU may or may not release information at any time regarding his status. I spoke with MSU people twice-- they had nothing to add other than an original opinion that he has a high ankle sprain and obviously could miss some time.

"The Dean of Sports" with a (non)update on Kalin Lucas' right ankle

Addendum: My impression is that high-ankle sprains (assuming that's what it is) tend to be unpredictable/nagging. Anyone out there have some expertise on this topic?

LVS EDIT: Per Rexrode, x-rays were negative, and (as we all expected) Kalin has a sprained ankle. His status for Saturday's game is uncertain.

Ugh

This is going to drive me nuts. I can see a win at Illinois if he’s still out, but we really do not want to have to face Purdue at home without him.

I just want him back for March

Obviously, losing Lucas then re-intergrating him might effect chemistry but I’ll roll those dice. Until then, we can get by and see what some other players can bring to the table in major minutes.

You’d rather him be out for a month than out for just one game?

by rcpratt on Feb 3, 2010 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

I understand the logic, but just wanted to be sure.

Well, obviously

As quick as he can come back is great but I’m making my peace with the idea that what’s key is not necessarily the next couple games or even the Big Ten title. Those things are great but MSU fans live for March. Let’s get Kalin back 85%-95% and take on the field of 64.

They're being a little clandestine about this.

That — and that he needed help to get off the freaking court last night — makes me fairly pessimistic.

X Rays confirm a sprain.

Status to be determined later in the week.

Team didn’t practice today, which explains the lack of press availablity.

This is not great news but it could be a lot worse.

The aftermath

I’m counting on the others to fill the hole for a few games. It won’t be easy, but when one door closes, another one opens. I believe Lucious will handle the point duties well. I’m confident that Green will step up. This would be a good time for Morgan to have a reincarnation of the player who could dominate games. Our story needs an unexpected hero. I think Dahlman is the guy to write the storybook ending to his career at State with some key contributions off the bench.

Experience

What I know about ankle sprains comes from UNC players having this injury. Marcus Ginyard had a high ankle sprain in late December. He missed about three weeks worth of games and his minutes were down when he returned. Although, his minutes are down because he hasn’t been great all year, but the ankle injury may have something to do with it.

Ty Lawson missed nearly a full month of games his sophomore year due to a high ankle sprain. When he did return, he was clearly not 100%.

We could be in some trouble.

Don't know what kind of sprain it was

By I had an ankle sprain from completely rolling it and though it was stiff for a few days, I was able to do a fairly physical job the next day after. It all depends on how bad it was and if Lucas is a fast healer.

Via Rexrode

Official Statement:

“X-Rays today confirmed that Kalin Lucas has a sprained ankle. The team did not practice today. We won’t have any idea on status for this weekend until at least tomorrow or later in the week when we see how it responds to treatment and how quickly it heals.”

I really hope that the part about his uncertain status for the weekend is an indication of the general time line they are considering this injury to be healed over.
