Game Thread: Spartans vs. Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan St. Spartans, Feb 9, 2010 8:00 PM CST

Alright, forget what that number-crunching ninny told you last night.  The Boilermakers are coming to our house tonight.  And we don't show our guests much hospitality.

I'm off to Breslin shortly.  LVS and Pete are busy attending to their odd obsessions with "taking care of academic responsibilities so we can get jobs."  So you kids are on your own for the game thread.  Don't invite your friends over to get drunk while we're gone--unless we win.

If I have any fantastic on-site observations, I'll likely post them to Twitter.

Go Green.  Go WHITE.  Beat the Boilers.

P.S. Sounds like Mr. Lucas is definitely going give it a go:

MSU assistant Mark Montgomery says Kalin Lucas is playing, and looked like he had no doubt when I just asked

All right.

Let’s give ’em hell and get it done.

Go Green. Go White. Go State.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 6:25 PM CST reply actions

Go State!

I’ve got an ample supply of Bell’s Porter and a snow day coming! I will not go to bed grumpy!

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 7:00 PM CST reply actions

I second the snow day!

It’s great living on the east coast where cities don’t have plows!

by Milton58 on Feb 9, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

You'd think they'd invest in a few

Given how they get at least one good storm every year (and about a dozen this year).

The snow totals they’re talking about on the east coast wouldn’t have even fazed people where I grew up (Minnesota). Two feet might be worth a day off … maybe.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

We got 32 inches in 24 hours here in DC

I think that would shut just about any city down for a day or two. Plus we’re getting another foot tonight into tomorrow.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that would do it

The upcoming storm, not so much.

We hit close to 40 inches in a single storm when I was six. That got us one day off. (Might have been two if it hadn’t been a Friday.) The looks I get from people in Texas when I mention that are quite comical.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, this new storm isn't that bad

but they haven’t plowed most of the side streets yet from the weekend storm, so it’s just piling more on there.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

No kidding

We are supposed to get 8 to 14 inches and they cancelled school for me and work for my girlfriend before any snow had fallen!

by Milton58 on Feb 9, 2010 8:07 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

They are quicker to pull the snow day trigger out here

I never remember them cancelling anything in Grand Rapids until after the snow had fallen.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

So we're all agreed?

Mike Kebler is 6’4"of superstar waiting to happen…

by arjunface on Feb 9, 2010 7:38 PM CST reply actions

Well, I think we can all agree and say...

FINISH off Wisconsin at the Kohl Center, Illini! Up 4, 3 minutes left.

If they show the beginning of it

Do we really need to see the last four minutes of a 22-point pantsing of Tennessee?

OK, Vandy's up 25

They are going to switch for the tip, right?

Man..

ESPN piss poor… no showing start of MSU so we can see a 20 point blowout?

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

How did he get that open?

At least he got hit hard enough not to make the dunk.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:14 PM CST reply actions

Second one, yeah

Looked like there was definitely contact, and he was fading away so it seems unlikely that he initiated it.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

Every single game...

he has to take at least one of those jump hooks that doesn’t even come close to the basket. Drives me nuts – he simply cannot make that shot.

Lucas doesn't seem too badly hampered by the ankle

If the speed with which he blew by the D there is any indication.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:24 PM CST reply actions

Don't know

He sprained his ankle against Illinois and hasn’t been himself of late. his best defensive play was a block in the end of the IU game. Other than that, pretty quiet

Even so

Kramer is one of the biggest pests in the Big Ten. And I mean that as a compliment (at least, when we’re not playing him).

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

Gotta be smarter than that, Morgan

Stevie Wonder could have seen that push-off from outer space.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

Okay, guys

Cold streak needs to end. Now.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Thank you

That was just as obvious as Morgan’s, and for a moment I thought they were going to let it go.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:34 PM CST reply actions

Wonk is probably having a heart attack right now

Our rebound total sucks because Purdue won’t miss anything.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:36 PM CST reply actions

We're not getting it done on the offensive end

It’s been one and done for us. We need to get some second chances

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

This is horrible...

but it appears we are out of gas before halftime.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 8:46 PM CST reply actions

They're shooting 65%

And it’s not because they’re just randomly catching fire. Our defense has been mediocre at best.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:46 PM CST reply actions

Man...

MSU getting their asses handed to them. Shame that Raymar and Summers have apparently decided they don’t like playing good teams.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 8:50 PM CST reply actions

It's a team-wide problem.

It’s not just Ray and Summers who aren’t guarding anyone.

Nope.

And what have they done with our basketball team?

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 8:57 PM CST reply actions

Musburger

Already trying to keep people from changing the channel.

by Con-T on Feb 9, 2010 8:58 PM CST reply actions

and they foul the 3 point shooter… all sorts of awesome.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 8:58 PM CST reply actions

Wasn’t any contact on the other end.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

That was Jackson fouling Lucas.

But I must admit…I didn’t see any contact on E’Twaun’s 3.

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

That was a horrendous call.

But we still just don’t have it for whatever reason.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:00 PM CST reply actions

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 9:01 PM CST reply actions

UNC, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue

All played better than they have or will play the rest of the year against MSU.

by Con-T on Feb 9, 2010 9:01 PM CST reply actions

Give Purdue credit

But we aren’t playing defense worth a damn. I haven’t seen a team defend this badly since the post-Sampson-firing Hoosiers came to visit on Senior Day and gave up 105 or so.

Worst defensive half of basketball

I can remember from an Izzo team. Just horrendous.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:02 PM CST reply actions

To be honest, I agree.

I have never seen Purdue get the ball to the post so easily. Not even against Cal State Northridge.

Hitting the treys is a nice bonus.

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

True

But I don’t think Purdue hits like that in a shoot-around.

by Con-T on Feb 9, 2010 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

Sooo....

Anyone else starting to feel like this team really isn’t very good? They’ve sqeeked by against mediocre teams.. beat the really bad teams.. and been embarassed by good teams.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 9:03 PM CST reply actions

I dunno

We pounded Wisconsin at home, pounded Illinois (before we lost interest after going up 25). Sometimes you just hit a bad stretch.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

We did beat Wisconsin at home

and that was a reasonably convincing win. It seems like it happend last year at this point though.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

We lost 3 games in a row earlier this season, too. You guys will be fine.

Besides, this ones not over yet. It’s college basketball. And you’re at home. Anything can happen.

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Agree, it's not over. Besides...

This is a tricky 3 game stretch. Can’t control the schedule.

by Beavis Beefcake on Feb 9, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Besides

If I remember right, the ‘05 team didn’t look all that special in the regular season either. They did just fine in March.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

Ummm.

‘05 team would have won the big ten if the Illini didn’t have the best season in their school’s history and almost make it through the season undefeated.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I thought that was the year we kept throwing away games with randomly awful FT shooting

I guess we looked pretty good as long as we managed not to be in a close game, and the FT shooting came around in the tournament.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

Or my memory is way off

How did we end up only a 5 seed that year?

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

If we don't figure it out in the second half

it will be hard to make a tourney run from a 5 seed.

by donaldo on Feb 9, 2010 9:03 PM CST reply actions

Anyone saying that Izzo yelling and screaming is the solution..

is a moron. This team is way past that. There are serious tactical and structural problems that are on display.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions

Purdue's first half efficiency

146 according to SCACCHoops. Their live stats aren’t always 100% accurate but that seems about right.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Anyone else as depressed as I am about now?

Man.. thought this season was headed somewhere special… enthusiasm about at 0 now.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 9:08 PM CST reply actions

If we can't start defending, yes

Seriously, our defense looked atrocious against Illinois and again so far today.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

It's one play.

We can’t defend a ball screen to save our lives.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

I think the book is out on our D

They’ve all seen something on film and will keep exploiting it until we prove we can stop it.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

I knew we had a problem...

when Davis was open for an entire game against Illinois.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

I'm almost kind of resigned at this point.

Everyone is playing the game of their life against us, and we’re a mess.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

I'm reaching the

“Well, we’re not going to look that good, I suppose. Perhaps some March magic will strike the team” mode.

by intrpdtrvlr on Feb 9, 2010 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

At some point

“Everybody playing the game of their life against you” isn’t a random occurrence.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:11 PM CST up reply actions

Until a week or so ago

Didn’t we lead the conference in defensive efficiency?

by Con-T on Feb 9, 2010 9:13 PM CST reply actions

I love Delvon Roe....

but I have contributed more this game than he has.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:19 PM CST reply actions

Green's third

As if things weren’t already bad enough.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:20 PM CST reply actions

that’s 3 straight mistakes by Lucious

by my2fish on Feb 9, 2010 9:22 PM CST reply actions

At this point

It’s probably 3 straight mistakes by everyone. Absolutely nothing has gone right tonight.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure what explains this

It’s not the shooting that bothers me so much – sometimes you just go cold. But fundamentally sound teams don’t forget how to play defense and rebound.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST reply actions

Confidence is shot.

Guys are literally afraid to make a move.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

I'd be tempted to put Kebler, Dahlman, and Herzog in...

since the guys on the floor are punched out and seemingly down for the count

by donaldo on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST reply actions

No kidding

They can’t be any worse.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

Man, the baseline violation call

Happens five times every game, never gets called.

by Con-T on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST reply actions

They are loving this in Columbus...

every bit as much as in West Lafayette.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 PM CST reply actions

One of these two teams is winning the B10.

Evan Turner is good, but there is no doubt in my mind that these are the best two teams.

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

MSU having a Texas style fall...

Wheels have completely fallen off this team.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 9:24 PM CST reply actions

Except that with Texas it almost makes sense

Their abysmal FT shooting and lack of a coherent plan on offense (their best defenders are sophomore-Walton-level liabilities on offense) are catching up to them. With us, I don’t understand. We shouldn’t have completely forgotten how to play defense over the past week.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

Izzo has a major job on his hands...

just getting this team to believe it can do anything correctly again.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 9:26 PM CST reply actions

This team has yet to play to its potential

The coach has to take some responsibility for that.

by donaldo on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

We're winning the turnover battle

But you don’t win games when the opponents’ eFG% is north of 70 and you’re barely cracking 40.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 9:28 PM CST reply actions

The shot of Izzo

He looked like a guy that doesn’t have an answer.

by donaldo on Feb 9, 2010 9:34 PM CST reply actions

We didn’t win the first nine by accident, and there’s no way we lose all of the last three with a healthy Lucas. Won’t be easy – our margin for error is totally gone – but 5-1 is still possible and that would get us a share (unless you think Purdue or OSU is winning out, and I don’t). If we can remember how to defend – we weren’t anywhere near this bad at it earlier – we can get there.

Finally just got home.

Seems like an incredible performance by Purdue, and especially E’Twaun Moore.

At least we fought back

First sign of life since that huge run against Illinois at home.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 10:15 PM CST reply actions

Yeah...

though honestly it just makes the game that much more disappointing… after fighting back they absolutely folded and fell apart with new found vigor.

Ran out of gas

Happens all the time to teams that have to make a huge comeback like that.

Don’t dig such a hole next time and it won’t be a problem.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

not the 1st time this year

this is probably the 3rd or 4th game we’ve done this – started a comeback too late in the 2nd half, and just didn’t have the time to finish it, or ran out of gas. sucks

by my2fish on Feb 9, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Second, by my count

UNC, yes. Florida, didn’t get to see it but I don’t think we fell that far behind. Texas, we got there but then Lucious did what he does best. Wisconsin, was a full on whipping. Illinois, we got there but left McCamey all alone at the wrong time.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

ok

sure, I didn’t mean Wisconsin, and maybe the gap wasn’t as large in some of the other games – but it seemed we always were too late to step on the gas

Someone guard the S....

don’t let Kramer pull the nonsense he did at IU

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 10:16 PM CST reply actions

Yup.

He was strong. Gained even more respect for the kid.

by rook34 on Feb 9, 2010 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

Uh, Lavin?

Purdue hasn’t outrebounded us. Not even close. 35% OR for us, 24% for Purdue.

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOO AHAHAHAH AYAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

This is like the best day of my life in the last 6 months. Because of sports. Is that okay?

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 10:19 PM CST reply actions

Ooops wrong blog.

Didn’t mean to rub it in. You guys showed up in the second half, you will finish the season strong.

by rcpratt on Feb 9, 2010 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

If nothing else...

that’s the last time we have to see Kramer play at Breslin.

Great game, everyone

Amazing fight in your team. I thought it was safe at 18 and you had it to three in no time.

A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Wouldn't quite call it great...

Goodluck to Purdue rest of the way – clearly the class of the conference.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

Y'know, he had a rough three-game streak recently

But for the most part, Chris Allen has showed up this season. I respect that guy.

by intrpdtrvlr on Feb 9, 2010 10:27 PM CST reply actions

+1...

Chris Allen been a bright spot lately. Only player with toughness on this team (aside from Green i guess) lately. He’s been playing like he actually cares if they win or not.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

oh come on

that isn’t what anybody would be saying 10 games ago. the guy had a god game, no reason to say that he is the only one who cares.

If the others do (and I think they do)

I wish they’d start playing like it. Until that late run tonight, it looked like we mailed in about five consecutive games.

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

Well I'd say Lucas has shown some toughness as well

But Allen is at least giving 100% on both ends of the floor. Not sure about others.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely

Allen has taken over Walton’s “underappreciated guard” spot, if not in exactly the same role (more of a bomber than a defensive god, though he’s been pretty solid there too).

by SpartanDan on Feb 9, 2010 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

He plays like he gets it

And now that his confidence is back on offense, he’s playing aggressive and looking for the ball to get open and shoot. Like I said, no one is on every night but he’s becoming one of those players I don’t worry about. And really, Green and Lucas are the only two right now.

(Yes, Green had a bad night but everyone does sometimes).

by intrpdtrvlr on Feb 9, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

What happened?

Where was durrell summers? Did he only play 5 minutes? did he get hurt? he only took 2 fg’s

by dcspartan1 on Feb 9, 2010 10:29 PM CST reply actions

Haven't heard anything about an injury

but I don’t know why his minutes disappeared.

by TheCrestedHelm on Feb 9, 2010 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

My guess..

lack of defense, offense, and rebounding.

by MooTheKow on Feb 9, 2010 10:34 PM CST up reply actions

he has been such a solid defensive rebounder

i mean, ,is it effort on defense or cluelessness. I don’t know if pulling him for the game is a good idea. we really lost a scoring threat there
