Big Ten Tournament Day One Open Thread

Here are today's games (all times Eastern):

2:30 - #8 Michigan v. #9 Iowa, ESPN2

30 min. after UM-Iowa - #7 Northwestern v. #10 Indiana, ESPN2

7:30 - #6 Minnesota v. #11 Penn State, BTN

To reiterate, Michigan State gets the winner of Minnesota and Penn State tomorrow sometime around 9 PM Eastern. As for today, let's try to enjoy these games even though they'll involve four of the five slowest major conference teams.  Ugh.

G-town vs Cuse

sort of off-topic from B10 games, but since Game #1 hasn’t started yet….
Georgetown is giving Syracuse one hell of a game right now… they’re up by 4 with about 4 minutes to go.

by my2fish on Mar 11, 2010 12:52 PM CST reply actions

Not happy

Georgetown will compete with us for a higher seed in the tourney. C’mon Cuse!

I don't like them

I feel like they’re always overrated.

Syracuse

Last 5 years:

08-09 – 3-seed – lost in Sweet Sixteen
07-08 – Missed the tourney
06-07 – Missed the tourney
05-06 – 5-seed – lost to 12-seed in first round
04-05 – 4-seed – lost to 13-seed in first round

I didn’t want them to win, but wanted Georgetown to lose much more.

by TMadison25 on Mar 11, 2010 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

Actually

I meant Geogetown is overrated. Think last year where they were top 10 and ended up missing the tournament. But hey, I learned Syracuse is way overrated today too. Maybe they could be the first 1 to lose to a 16.

Kansas

is also having a hard time putting away Texas Tech. Interesting day for a couple expected #1 seeds.

Michigan killing Iowa so far

This game was all ready boring since both teams aren’t even in NIT consideration (or eligibility) and Lickliter’s possibly a dead man walking, but it’s also uncompetitive so far. Michigan just beating Iowa at about everything so far.

Iowa transfer

John Lickliter is transferring . BHGP says Butler would be ideal. No word on Todd Lickliter’s transfer plans.

Last paragraph

truly hilarious. Great sense of humor.

by TMadison25 on Mar 11, 2010 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

Funniest read in a while

I can’t decide if my favorite line is “Ten times Lickliter was not named Big Ten Player of the week” or “he would be a better fit within Butler’s philosophy of winning lots of games.”

Any chance

Michigan could knock off Ohio State?

by TMadison25 on Mar 11, 2010 2:29 PM CST reply actions

not likely...

I might see it if it was OSU’s 2nd or 3rd straight game of the weekend, but not the 1st one.
U-M would have to be shooting lights out, and then some…

by my2fish on Mar 11, 2010 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

if Matta decides to rest his starters for significant parts of the game. If I were him I’d be tempted to bow out of the BTT ASAP to get the starting 5 some decent rest before the NCAA’s. I’m not sure they have much to gain by winning the BTT.

by TheCrestedHelm on Mar 11, 2010 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

Potential #1 seed

Now that Cuse lost two in a row?

by TMadison25 on Mar 11, 2010 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Purdue, though?

but if OSU and Purdue both would make it to the B10 final game, don’t you think the nod might go to Purdue (only 4 losses instead of 7)?

by my2fish on Mar 11, 2010 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

The media has been drinking the "the 3 losses w/o ET don't count" kool-aid

There’s no way Purdue gets a 1 unless they win the BTT, and even then maybe not.

by rcpratt on Mar 11, 2010 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Nova falls

Nova just lost to Marquette.

ESPN’s bracket had Nova as a #3 – so does this help MSU’s chances of getting at least a #3?

by my2fish on Mar 11, 2010 3:50 PM CST reply actions

I doubt Nova falls to 4

They still seem like a pretty solid 3 to me.

by rcpratt on Mar 11, 2010 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Seemed like a lot of people took NU in the contest

Come on IU, you need to get me that book.

On the note of contests, will last year’s NCAA pick em’ work the same way again this year? I rather enjoyed the non bracket style contest.

Know what IU needs?

Armon Bassett! Sixteen points with 7 minutes left in the Ohio vs. Kent State first half and he’s led the Bobcats to a 13 point lead!

Sorry, MSU undergrad turned Ohio grad student.

Because your view of PSU

is skewed by freak performances against us? I know I had to resist the urge to pick them over Minnesota.

by Seer on Mar 11, 2010 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

I'm fairly sure I did the same

Mostly because Minnesota lost by 30 to Michigan, which seems impossible.

by SpartanDan on Mar 11, 2010 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

More interesting question.

It’s probably academic at this point, but who’d you rather play? Battle has given us fits, obviously, but it’s not like we’ve handled Minnesota with ease this season.

by LVS on Mar 11, 2010 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

With Battle hurt, that’s an easy call. PSU minus Battle (or with him playing at 50%) is Indiana 2008-09 bad.

by SpartanDan on Mar 11, 2010 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

Read Hammer and Rails prediction.

Unsurprisingly, he picked PSU to upset us. Would be “nice” if PSU loses to “throw” off his scenario. Although we really should beat whoever comes out of that game. If we don’t we don’t deserve a 4 seed or higher.

Been reading that blog all year…can anyone answer me why Purdue fans view the Big Ten Title in basketball as a birth right? I know…22 B10 titles…winning record against all other schools… Most of their success came in the 20’s and 30’s (10 B10 titles between 1921 and 1938) they were impressively expert in the use of the two handed set shot. I think they should be justifiably proud of their overall Big Ten Title history, I just don’t get this opinion if they look at recent history.

Thoughts?

by MSULaxer27 on Mar 11, 2010 7:17 PM CST reply actions

Doesn't make much sense to me either

Though I don’t get the sense that they are that over-the-top about it (certainly not like Alabama football fans or Kentucky basketball fans). But the Big Ten doesn’t really have a team that in recent history can claim the conference title as theirs to lose – four teams in the 2000s won at least one title outright and won or shared at least three. Four teams won two conference tournament titles (and one of them never won the regular season title!). This isn’t like the SEC, where the conference title standings look something like Kentucky 45, Everybody Not Named Kentucky Combined 35.

by SpartanDan on Mar 11, 2010 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I'm certainly biased, but...

First of all, it’s not any fun if you don’t pick any upsets. I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t think MSU is good or anything like that.

I honestly have never personally felt that the Big Ten title is a birth right, nor have I ever heard that sentiment expressed by any other fans. Yes, the 22 Big Ten titles and winning records against all other Big Ten schools are occasionally mentioned, but I don’t really think it’s excessive. They are certainly interesting facts, and things that most casual fans wouldn’t expect. I’m sure if Purdue had a more successful recent history, you wouldn’t hear those facts mentioned nearly as much. Until we make another Final Four again (if ever, curse our luck) that’s pretty much all we have to hang our hat on.

by rcpratt on Mar 11, 2010 7:41 PM CST up reply actions

You guys had a run from '87 to '96 like our current run.

6 Big Ten titles, multiple NCAA bids…then a dry spell till this year. So I know it is possible for you guys…what scares me is that when our run ends…will we have to wander in the wilderness as long?

Good luck. Solid team.

by MSULaxer27 on Mar 11, 2010 8:25 PM CST up reply actions

Well, that's a bit of a stretch.

But I guess it depends on how you define a run. Purdue has always had a ton of success in conference play, but absolutely none in the tournament. Purdue had just two Sweet Sixteens from ’87 to ’96, while Michigan State had FIVE Final Fours from ’99 to ’10.

Our dry spell was caused by hanging onto a fantastic but past his prime coach for far too long. It doesn’t look like Izzo is ever leaving East Lansing, and he’s a long ways from past his prime. I don’t think you need to worry for awhile.

by rcpratt on Mar 11, 2010 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

I meant in conference.

MSU 1998-2010 – 6 Big Ten Titles/13 years
PU 1987-1996 – 6 Big Ten Titles/10 years

In both those time periods both schools were expected to be in contention for the B10 title if not the favorite.

It’s funny that long past his prime thing…How do you know when that switch flips?

Keady – 1980-2005 Age 44 – 69 last B10 title in year 16 at age 60.
Izzo – 1996-2010 Age 40 – 55 this is year 15.

Keady finished 2nd in the Big Ten in year 19 and 3rd in year 23.

Now I hope that Tom has better success than Gene in years 16-25, but you never know. Their Big Ten coaching careers are very similar to this point. (Again – only B10)

by MSULaxer27 on Mar 11, 2010 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think that picking PSU to beat us is completely insane.

They’ve given us so many problems over the past few seasons — as recently as last week — and Travis knows that. I think Boilers, on the whole, are fairly good people. I do get annoyed with how Boiled Sports constantly plays the DISRESPECT!!!1 card, but that’s a pretty common thing on the internets, as you might have noticed.

by LVS on Mar 11, 2010 7:46 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe I was confusing Boiled Sports with Hammer and Rails.

I won’t ever play the disrespect card (especially when we have at least 2 NCAA berths this decade that we probably didn’t deserve). Still, I believe of the 3 co-titlest’s, our full strength team is the least highly regarded in conference and nationally. It would be nice to beat PU and OSU on the way to the BTT title.

by MSULaxer27 on Mar 11, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Upsets

I personally picked two of them. It’s not fun to pick if you go with the safe team all the time.

Plus, given how they played the past couple weeks, who could have guessed that they’d come out tonight and just give up?

by AustinP0027 on Mar 11, 2010 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

PSU down by 22

unless Penn State mounts one hell of a comeback, we won’t have to worry about them… it’s on to Tubby and the Gophers.

Big East upset city

Pitt is now the latest Big East team to get upset today. crazy day in the Big East, that is for sure.

MAC upset city, too!

9th seed Ohio beats RPI Top 50 and MAC leaders Kent State 81-64 behind 38 points from Armon Bassett.

FWIW

Izzo admitted he hasn’t placed a high priority on the BTT in the past at the pep rally tonight. Joked that he supported creating the tournament only because MSU wasn’t very good at the time and it was a potential way to make the NCAA Tournament. Said he wants to win this year for all the MSU fans who show up every year.

Also

As tweeted earlier, he was vague about Allen. Said he’d “be back” this weekend but whether he played would be up to Allen. Talked generally about the needing to do what’s best for members of team in terms of holding them responsible even though it may disappoint the fans.

Just saw the Rexrode post

reporting that Allen traveled with the team. Seems like a lock he plays Saturday if MSU wins tomorrow.

Does anyone want in?

Arizona State lost to Stanford, Washington trails Oregon State (though as I type they’ve gone on a 17-2 run to take a 3-point lead), Clemson lost to NC State (they’re probably okay anyway), Kent State (the MAC’s only marginally plausible candidate) got destroyed, San Diego St. barely escaped, UAB got crushed, Memphis lost, Wake Forest got blown out by Miami. About the only teams to make a positive statement are Big East teams that went from “in as long as things don’t completely fall apart” to “in as long as there’s no meteor strike wiping out the arena”, plus a couple of teams who beat bad teams to stay in the discussion but didn’t really help themselves so much as avoid hurting themselves (Minnesota, Florida, Cal if you think they’re not a lock)

Update

I posted this in the original thread, but probably belongs here

By my count…

11 entries have three points
31 entries have two points
9 entries have one point

Unfortunately, no one picked Iowa, Indiana and Penn State to win.

Delvon Roe

This came out a couple of days ago but I haven’t seen it mentioned here. Apparently Roe has been playing in pain for a while this season but didn’t tell the coaches. Probably not cool, but he is a tough kid.

Due to technical issues I have not been able to FanShot this so here’s the link.
