The only “consistent” thing about Comley’s teams has been their inconsistent play. The 2007 National champs had the most losses of any titleist in NCAA Div I hockey history. This means they either underachieved during the regular season (strong possibility under Comley) or they overachieved during the tourney and rode a very hot goalie (they gave up 4 goals in the tourney). I actually think it’s both.

I’ve thought about this a lot this season, whether or not I have been fair to Coach Comely vis a vis my treatment and expectations of Coach Izzo and the basketball team.

Izzo after 7 seasons: 1 National Championship, 3 Final Fours, 4 Big Ten Titles, 2 Big Ten Tourney Titles, 5 NCAA appearances(16-4 in the tourney), 0 losing records (overall and conference).

Comley after 7 seasons (this one still is incomplete): 1 National Championship, 1 Frozen Four, 0 CCHA Titles, 1 CCHA Tourney Title, 4 NCAA appearances (6-3 tourney), 1 losing record overall, 2 losing conference records. It should also be noted that his 2008-09 team posted the fewest wins by a Spartan Hockey team since 1978.

Apples and Oranges maybe…but after the success Mason had, it really feels like Comley has underachieved. It’s easier to make the NCAA hockey tourney than basketball…yet (if we miss this season as expected) he’s missed the tourney in half his seasons coached, that combined with 0 regular season titles and 1 Tourney Title (a Tourney we own 11 titles in 28 years) leads me to believe that we should make a change.
