NCAA Tournament Day One Open Thread
After what seems like years of waiting, one of the best days of basketball of the year is finally here. The good folks at CBS Sports have been kind enough to partner with SB Nation to provide us with links to watch the games online. Here it is:
Just click on the game you want to see, and if CBS isn't showing it in your area, you'll be able to watch it. Here's the link if you want a larger version of the player in another window: Launch Player
This is our first time using live video, so either comment in the thread or shoot me an e-mail at pete.rossman@gmail.com if you're having problems with the site.
Enough tech talk. LET THE GAMES...BEGIN!

Wanna see Pomeroy's bracket?
True to his recent blog post (“Kansas Will Not Win It All”) he has West Virginia over Georgetown in the final. At least he has the Spartans in the Sweet 16. It can be found here.
I can’t believe it’s not 5:00 yet. . .
WV
Glad to see him high on WV. I picked them to make the final.
Was it just me or was that "Kansas Will Not Win It All" post kinda odd?
For a change of pace
It’s nice to see a rout. K-State is destroying North Texas. Vanderbilt still trailing Murray St., and I will be screwed if Baylor loses to Sam Houston.
Understatement
Amazing buzzer beater. Falling away, looked out of control, swish.

Had to follow by the equivalent of telegraph – “live” game feeds. Still, the drama was great.
Missed out
When they inbounded, it looked like he was bottled up. But two passes later… Boosh! fadeaway at the buzzer. Soooooo goood!
Baylor's pulled away
I can breathe easy again, as can anyone else – unless you had Vandy going to the Final 4. Then I feel sorry for you, and you got what you deserved for picking Vandy to go to Indy.

Kalin is Pissed
At MSU’s presser today, Kalin Lucas called Jahmar Young’s comments from the other day “disrespectful.” Later, in the locker room, Lucas said: "We’re just gonna see tomorrow. He don’t know me now. Tomorrow he’s definitely gonna know me."
New Mexico State is up in a little bit. We’ll see what they have to say about what MSU said about what they said. Lucas is pretty fired up, I don’t think I’ve seen him ticked off like this before a game. Draymond Green showed him the comments two days, and then Lucas said he started getting calls left and right from people back in Detroit. Tom Izzo downplayed the comments and said he hopes Lucas doesn’t need something like that to be motivated. I’d say it’s definitely added some fuel.
Also today, I had a pretty good one-on-one with Durrell Summers, here’s one of his comments with more to follow:
"I just came away with stuff I need to do different, stuff I need to get better at," Summers said of his talks with Izzo. "Coach made his decision and at the time I might not have been happy with it, but in the end you see that it helped."

I am surpised by the Ohio victory but not at all shocked.
I’ve watched them many times this season and their talent is for real. When Bassett, Cooper, and Freeman are hitting like that, they are tough. I thought one of the keys was keeping DeVaughn Washington out of foul trouble and he only picked up two all night. Huge for OU.
Again, picking my second team for the Sweet Sixteen wasn’t purely delusional bias. They’re hot, playing their best, and can flat-out ball. I’d watch out if I were Tennessee or SDSU.
not me
I haven’t watched them at all, so this one caught me way off guard. luckily I only had G’town winning 1 more game. 1st team out of the sweet 16 for me.
should clarify...

Good point

Just a Sweet 16 for me
Though I’m suddenly extremely nervous about my Syracuse and West Virginia Final Four picks.
I'm nervous about mine too
I had Georgetown to the sweet 16 along with Villanova, and Syracuse and West Virginia making it to the final weekend (but neither in the final game). Given the Big East’s performance so far, those picks are looking iffy. If I had to guess I’d say it’s going to be a Big 12 year.

3 Big East schools out. All lower seeds. Nova just survived. Maybe next year the Big East doesn't get the benefit of the doubt?
You'd think so
But the Syracuse Memorial Ridiculously Overseeded Big East Team of the Year (usually due to a late run, often in the conf tourney) is a tradition that goes back at least to 2006.
Ya mean when Syracuse...
went from like a bubble team to a 3 seed because of the big east tournament?
But yes, that was why it's named for Syracuse
Don’t remember if Pitt’s adventure with that category was the year before or the year after – think the year after.
no defense
Georgetown did not play any defense. They almost gave up 100 points! the talking heads keep talking about Marquette’s toughness, but they barely defended. all the big eats teams I saw today seemed overconfident, and then played tight once it was a game.
You know, that last part makes sense
Haven’t seen too much Big East action, but “overconfident and playing tight” certainly describes Louisville last year. Once we got up more than one basket in the second half, I knew the game was over – Louisville expected to run us off the floor and when that didn’t happen it seemed as though they were saying “Wait, we actually have to work for this? Screw that.”
I think it's a function of the bottom of the league
which is just atrocious. When you play against the likes of St. Johns, Depaul, Rutgers, etc. on a regular basis it is easy to rack up pretty gaudy efficiency margins and get a little full of yourself.
by TheCrestedHelm on Mar 18, 2010 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions
No defense in the Big East
Check out the conference efficiency numbers. Every team except Syracuse (at .99) over 1 PPP. Despite the horrible bottom of the conference. That’s got to raise some questions.
Is it good offense or bad defense?
Hard to say in a vacuum. (Unless it’s Providence. Then it’s abysmal defense.)
Good question
There are several offenses at or below 1 point per trip but only one defense. Would seem that there is not a culture of D as the Big Ten has.
Emphatic finish to the half for Wake
Missed three, thunderous put-back. Texas up one at the break. And Lehigh hanging with Kansas still.
