NCAA Tournament Day One Open Thread

After what seems like years of waiting, one of the best days of basketball of the year is finally here.  The good folks at CBS Sports have been kind enough to partner with SB Nation to provide us with links to watch the games online. Here it is:

Just click on the game you want to see, and if CBS isn't showing it in your area, you'll be able to watch it.  Here's the link if you want a larger version of the player in another window:  Launch Player

This is our first time using live video, so either comment in the thread or shoot me an e-mail at pete.rossman@gmail.com if you're having problems with the site.

Enough tech talk.  LET THE GAMES...BEGIN!

May the best men (or women) win.

Kalin is Pissed

At MSU’s presser today, Kalin Lucas called Jahmar Young’s comments from the other day “disrespectful.” Later, in the locker room, Lucas said: "We’re just gonna see tomorrow. He don’t know me now. Tomorrow he’s definitely gonna know me."

New Mexico State is up in a little bit. We’ll see what they have to say about what MSU said about what they said. Lucas is pretty fired up, I don’t think I’ve seen him ticked off like this before a game. Draymond Green showed him the comments two days, and then Lucas said he started getting calls left and right from people back in Detroit. Tom Izzo downplayed the comments and said he hopes Lucas doesn’t need something like that to be motivated. I’d say it’s definitely added some fuel.
Also today, I had a pretty good one-on-one with Durrell Summers, here’s one of his comments with more to follow:
"I just came away with stuff I need to do different, stuff I need to get better at," Summers said of his talks with Izzo. "Coach made his decision and at the time I might not have been happy with it, but in the end you see that it helped."

I am surpised by the Ohio victory but not at all shocked.

I’ve watched them many times this season and their talent is for real. When Bassett, Cooper, and Freeman are hitting like that, they are tough. I thought one of the keys was keeping DeVaughn Washington out of foul trouble and he only picked up two all night. Huge for OU.

Again, picking my second team for the Sweet Sixteen wasn’t purely delusional bias. They’re hot, playing their best, and can flat-out ball. I’d watch out if I were Tennessee or SDSU.

But the Syracuse Memorial Ridiculously Overseeded Big East Team of the Year (usually due to a late run, often in the conf tourney) is a tradition that goes back at least to 2006.

no defense

Georgetown did not play any defense. They almost gave up 100 points! the talking heads keep talking about Marquette’s toughness, but they barely defended. all the big eats teams I saw today seemed overconfident, and then played tight once it was a game.

by Anderlecht on Mar 18, 2010 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

You know, that last part makes sense

Haven’t seen too much Big East action, but “overconfident and playing tight” certainly describes Louisville last year. Once we got up more than one basket in the second half, I knew the game was over – Louisville expected to run us off the floor and when that didn’t happen it seemed as though they were saying “Wait, we actually have to work for this? Screw that.”

by SpartanDan on Mar 18, 2010 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it's a function of the bottom of the league

which is just atrocious. When you play against the likes of St. Johns, Depaul, Rutgers, etc. on a regular basis it is easy to rack up pretty gaudy efficiency margins and get a little full of yourself.

by TheCrestedHelm on Mar 18, 2010 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions

No defense in the Big East

Check out the conference efficiency numbers. Every team except Syracuse (at .99) over 1 PPP. Despite the horrible bottom of the conference. That’s got to raise some questions.

by Con-T on Mar 18, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Is it good offense or bad defense?

Hard to say in a vacuum. (Unless it’s Providence. Then it’s abysmal defense.)

by SpartanDan on Mar 18, 2010 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Good question

There are several offenses at or below 1 point per trip but only one defense. Would seem that there is not a culture of D as the Big Ten has.

Wretched..

SDSU getting hosed on several posessions here now i thought.

I love the announcer...

a few minutes ago slobbering all over Bruce Pearl.
“He’s amazing”.

Meh.

This has been an insanely good first day.

Plenty of upsets and close games, few unexpected blowouts (Kentucky, K-State, and Kansas don’t count).

makes it harder

to bail out on the late games.

Looked like a foul on the Texas shot that got blocked

Follow-through on the block clocked the guy across the face.

Whacky...

Hate when two really close games are ending at the same time.

by MooTheKow on Mar 18, 2010 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

did SDSU miss a free throw?

by my2fish on Mar 18, 2010 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

No

Tenn was up 1 before that exchange

by SpartanDan on Mar 18, 2010 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

CBS pissin me off

they keep switching back and forth!
I finally pulled up the CBS thing on the computer to watch both games

Foul on Wake

That one looked like a travel first – he palmed the ball, took two steps, decided against dribbling, took another step, and shot.

by SpartanDan on Mar 18, 2010 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

yeah

exactly what I was thinking

by my2fish on Mar 18, 2010 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

the last 2 drives to the hole by texas

have been ugly.

it looked like he might have walked, too??

by my2fish on Mar 18, 2010 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

Wow..

crazy end to regulation in the Texas game.

by MooTheKow on Mar 18, 2010 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

Pulling for Texas

Have them beating Kentucky. Can at least come close in the athleticism department.

Me too

I thought they’d take this first one without this much difficulty.

I have Wisconsin over Kentucky

I know Bo’s history as “Mr. February”, but Wisconsin is exactly the sort of team that can give an undisciplined Kentucky squad fits.

by SpartanDan on Mar 18, 2010 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

I had sdsu

but I also had G-town winning 2 games, so that little piece of the pie was already screwed

by my2fish on Mar 18, 2010 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

um

not using MMOD right now, but ESPN360 does the same thing to me – if I’m running it full-screen, a commercial locks up my whole machine

by my2fish on Mar 18, 2010 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

again, on ESPN360

so hate to muddy the water, but when I’m watching ESPN 360, only the ESPN commercials will play… any other commercial, the screen just goes blank

Different Texas than we saw in December

J’Covan Brown the go-to guy, Pittman a non-factor, Balbay gone. . .

by Con-T on Mar 18, 2010 11:25 PM CDT reply actions

Texas trying to fail.

Not a fan of J’Covan Brown.. something about him rubs me the wrong way.

by MooTheKow on Mar 18, 2010 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

Epic choke job by Texas

Appropriate end to their season.

by Con-T on Mar 18, 2010 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

Was just thinking the same thing...

sucky way to go out for Damien James… and how sucky would it be to be a Texas fan this season?

by MooTheKow on Mar 18, 2010 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh well...

Barnes is more concerned about getting players to the NBA than winning these games anyways, right?

by MooTheKow on Mar 18, 2010 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Beating MSU in the non-conference schedule

Appears to be the kiss of death for your season.

You must be joking.

New Mexico guy runs full bore into a Montana defender at the top of the key. Montana guy holds his ground and gets whistled for the block because he didn’t flop.

16 games today

Three went OT (including a 2OT), five others (not even counting NM-MT yet) decided by three or less.

I love March Madness.

Till I can watch them (or more of them) on TV. Taking tomorrow off. Feeling clammy. . .

feeling clammy

heard on the radio today: this is the busiest season for vasectomy surgery…. guys figure they can rest the boys a couple days on the couch

Good night, all

Here’s to another great day of basketball tomorrow—although I could go for a blowout by the favorite in that 5-12 game in Spokane . . .
