MICHIGAN STATE 70, NEW MEXICO STATE 67: AFTERGLOW THREAD

Truly a game of two halves, as Your Spartans dominated the first twenty minutes and then were blitzed by scorching-hot Aggie shooting in the second frame.  Somehow (read: great play down the stretch by Raymar Morgan, key points from Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers, and improved defense), we ended up with the victory . . . barely.  It may have come at some cost, though: Chris Allen appeared to re-injure his foot, and it wouldn't be a surprise to not have his services for the rest of the way -- however long that may be

In any event, we survived and advanced, as they say, though the thousands of mini-heart attacks along the way weren't exactly fun.  Next up: Maryland or Houston, on Sunday.  Until then, here's your celebration-ish thread, and it doubles as open thread for tonight's remaining games.  GO STATE!

+1

But I don’t have a good feeling about this.

Well, at least we averted that disaster.

Great D the last few minutes.

Exhibited some good old fashioned toughness. We didn’t want to go home.

Maybe Jud has some sort of magical healing potion at his house for Chris.

Survive and advance.

Hooray Big Ten. Let’s do it again Sunday. Hope everyone on MSU turns out uninjured.

P.S. (points sheepishly to the score you wrote and notes the margin is right but…)

Ha, oops.

Brainfried after four days of Las Vegas and two hours of . . . that.

Jud, via Boylen

Jim Boylen was part of a panel on the CBS College Sports network last night. He said that Jud always said that to go deep in the tournament you have to win one you don’t deserve. Hopefully, this was ours.

How about putting it away earlier next game?

It never gets to be easy

In my opinion

Allen looked like he cramped up more than anything else, meaning he should be fine foe Sunday.

Just my two cents.

by Pete Rossman on Mar 19, 2010 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

who would we rather play?

Houston or Maryland? tight, back & forth game.

by GreenMitt on Mar 19, 2010 9:50 PM CDT reply actions

Houston...

seems smaller teams can come out and play great one game but having trouble putting together a weekend.

by MooTheKow on Mar 19, 2010 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Certainly Houston.

I’m not scared of General Greivis, though.

Lane violaton call being overblown

MSU would still have been up 2. Officials were a failure in this game.

by Con-T on Mar 19, 2010 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Yup.

Their performance will be graded poorly. Zero consistency. Must have been very hard to play in that game as what was a foul changed constantly.

by rook34 on Mar 19, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's take a deep breath and look at some facts

New Mexico State did not have a field goal between the 8:35 and 0:22 marks of the second half
NMSU took two shots in the final 6 seconds and missed them both
The lane violation DID occur, and could be clearly seen on replay

So calling the violation that did occur was what cost NMSU the game? Yeah, the NCAA conspiracy in favor of the major conferences extends this deep. Give me an effing break.

by Con-T on Mar 19, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

No kidding about the lane violation

People are acting like that never happens, but I see at least a half dozen every year.

by SpartanDan on Mar 19, 2010 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Mostly when Ibok (last year) or Morgan (this year) is shooting them. They have a weird hitch in their stroke that throws everyone off.

by SpartanDan on Mar 19, 2010 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

As a basketball fan, I’m not wild about the call, but 1) it was correct, and 2) it hardly decided the game. I think a worse decision was not looking at video to see if more time should have been after the out-of-bounds at the end of the game. But the referees didn’t hand us this game. Not remotely.

by LVS on Mar 19, 2010 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

And finally

Just watched the replay analysis on ESPN. The call was made before Morgan released the ball. Agree that NMSU should have had .6 seconds to shoot, though.

by Con-T on Mar 19, 2010 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure

Reaction time is not instantaneous, and they don’t usually review the clock unless it’s obvious that it ran and shouldn’t have (which wasn’t the case here). That’s an inconsistency that maybe ought to be fixed – a “correct” stoppage of the clock is usually 0.2-0.3 seconds slower than what they’ll put up if they do go to the monitor.

by SpartanDan on Mar 20, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but they've been reviewing those kinds of plays routinely during the conference tournaments

and the early parts of this tournament. They’ve got replay available. Might as well use it.

Brando really slurping Vasquez.

The guy’s a clown. Good player, but he’s damn lucky someone hasn’t sucker punched him in four years.

Wow...

nice shot at the end of the half.. hope houston wins by 1 :-)

I've been messing with this since this afternoon...

…ever since I saw it on deadspin. I want to have little Gus Johnson exclamations punctuate my everyday life. Make a good point in an argument with a colleague: “Puuurrrreeeee!” Parallel park into a small spot on the first try: “And buries it!” Finish the NYT’s Sunday crossword: “Here comes the pain!” Yep, that’s what I want.

On a next year note...

Looks like Payne’s squad survived and advanced too. He’s the only recruit still playing this season. Hopefully the others are at the gym shooting free throws on a Friday night.

Promising news on Allen:

He returned shortly thereafter, in noticeable pain, when junior guard Chris Allen went down himself with an ankle injury. Allen did not return but both he and Lucas said after the game they would be ready for Sunday.
