New football commit
[Bumped. Hey, we have a football team! -KJ]
Taiwan Jones is the third player to commit to MSU for 2011. He's listed by Rivals as an athlete and comes from New Baltimore, MI.
Given his size and speed, he's probably a Safety prospect. Per the Spartan Tailgate boards, he's very young for a H.S. junior. Rivals hasn't rated him yet and he's not on any of their watchlists, which apparently means he's unlikely to be rated above 3* by them. Chose MSU over offers from Indiana, Purdue, CMU and Toledo. Goes to Anchor Bay High School.

I trust our coaching staff on recruiting...but....
Recruiting is a tricky art. Guys who are rated “5 star” can be a bust and walk-ons can make the 1st Team All Big Ten. Still, I’m hoping we get to the point (sometime soon) where our recruits are turning down offers from BCS power teams not MAC schools and Indiana. You must have talent to beat talent, coaching only goes so far. (Not that talented players don’t go to MAC schools or Indiana, but if we want to compete with OSU, PSU, UW and when they get their feet back under them UM, then we have to poach some players from their wish lists).
That being said, Mark Dantonio has made it a point to start all recruiting looks in the state of Michigan and this commit fits with that outlook.
I think...
…we’re a lot closer to that point than your post seems to be implying.
William Gholston and, this year, Lawerence Thomas certainly fit that description. If the current prognostication holds, Dantonio will have gotten the highest-rated player in the state of Michigan in two straight years, something pretty unheard of for MSU lately. (Over the Dantonio era its been Ronald Johnson-USC, Nick Perry-USC, that big DT whose name escapes me-UofM, Gholston-MSU)
Of the 2010 classes’ top-rated players, per Rivals.
Gholston- turned down a who’s who of Bama, Florida, OSU, Oklahoma
QB Joe Boisture- turned down BC, Wiscy, KSU, UCLA, Pitt, CMU
LB Max Bullough-turned down Iowa, ND, Wiscy, Standford, UCLA,
S Isaiah Lewis- turned down the rest of Big 10, minus PSU, OSU, UofM and NW
OT Skyler Schofer- turned down Boston College, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Purdue, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin
Also punter Mike Sadler reportedly turned down an 11th hour offer from Kiffykins at USC.
2011r’s second commit, Lawrence Thomas, turned down Bama, Florida, Miami, Michigan, ND, OSU, Oklahoma, USC and PSU
That looks to me like we’re competing pretty well with our fellow mid-level BCS programs and grabbing a few that the real bigs wanted.

Yep
In a few years when these guys have experience we’ll see the results of improved recruiting by this staff. Our recruiting is at least good enough to threaten for the Rose Bowl every few years or so.
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
