NCAA East/West Regional Final Open Thread
Regional finals often produce the best basketball games of the tournament (although that's a tall order this year). We're down to eight teams that have proven they can play the game at a high level, but the often crushing pressure that comes with Final Four week hasn't arrived yet.
The East Regional final, Butler-Kansas State, begins at 4:30.
The West Regional final, West Virginia-Kentucky, tips off at 7:05.
We're done with keeping track of multiple games at the same time, but in case you're not in front of a TV, here's your game video:![]()
And, here's the link to a larger video player: Launch Player.
Enjoy the action. And rest up for tomorrow afternoon.

Updates from Rexrode
Allen says his foot actually feels better today.
I worry more about Roe’s knee. At some point, it just seems like the thing is going to stop working.

at least Allen is feeling better
We knew Roe was never gonna get better and was likely going to feel a little worse on the quick turnaround. Allen was the X factor. Glad to hear he is filling good adding him at full or next to full strength would help a lot.

Butler up 6 with 53 sec to go
I could see the KSU coach murdering someone. He just has that look to him.

Watching Adreian Payne's team
I say his team because he hasn’t been able to stay on the floor. Picked up his fourth midway through the third quarter. He’s not especially Roe-like, as someone in another thread suggested. Doesn’t play with a lot of energy. His game is more that of a 5 than a 4. Seems to have problems playing defense in the paint without fouling. In fact, the team has played better with him on the bench.
I believe the Roe comment was because he is playing hurt
From what im hearing his team is not making much of an effort to get the ball down low to him

Wow. The Bulldogs dance on.
That’s a hell of a 1-2 combination to beat in a 48 hour span. Kansas State and Syracuse?
I think we can strip the Mid Major label from Butler.
If Hayward stays, they’re top 5 to start next season.
Butler, yeah!
Best possible matchup for MSU. Butler has faced four uptempo teams so far (UTEP, Murray St., ’Cuse, and KSU) and forced them all to play too slow for their comfort.
(Season Avg. Posess. / vs. Butler Posess.)
UTEP (70/67)
Murray (67/58)
Cuse (70/63)
KSU (70/62ish)
Those last two games also featured two of the worst well-thought-of coaches around.
MSU would be totally fine with a 60 possession game, and has a pretty decent coach.
Tennessee and Butler are both extremely good basketball teams, and a loss to either would be wholly unsurprising. But there is a very real path to the championship game now. A truly amazing thought, given what four weeks ago looked like.
Bizzarre game
WVU leads by 2 at the half without making any field goals within the arc

Was just about to post the same thing...
not sure I’ve ever seen that before… funky.
It's hard to "root" for either of these teams.
They feature two of the seediest, most unlikable coaches in the game. That coupled with the ridiculous Kentucky fans…If i have to choose, it’s WVU barely.
+1...
or should it be -1? I’m not rooting for WVU in this game – I am rooting against Kentucky.
How Does Calapari.....
…..Keep getting jobs?…..Umass mess puts univeristy back 10 yrs with all his violations…..memphis next with more voilations and wiins removed…..Then within 3 days is hired at kentucky?….I just dont get how he gets jobs when he puts every school behind the 8 ball then leaves beofre it gets to risky while he is there….Shafy

That last 3
I don’t know what Kentucky is thinking there. You can’t back off a guy like that when you know WVU will take 3s all day long on you.

Hate both of these coaches with a passion
Huggins at least has some ability as an in-season coach. Calipari is done for the year when the recruiting class is signed. Huggins is dirty as hell, but Calipari runs a pure semi-pro team without apology.
The funny thing is watching a game knowing that in five years, it will not have happened. No matter how many games UK wins this year, the official total will be zero.
If they win it all the NCAA wont do anything
They never come down on the champs that would look to bad

I've got Baylor too
But many, many thanks to West Virginia: first for defeating Calipari, and second for ensuring that my no 0-for-4-in-the-Final-Four streak continues.
The difference between Cal and Roy "Mr. November" Williams
When Cal has 4 NBA ready players on his team he goes out in the Regional Final. When Roy has 4 NBA ready players on his team he wins the National Championship. It will be interesting to see what UK puts on the floor next year, because none of these guys are going to be back. The Coach Cal formula, “One and rebuilding.”
Contest update
Assuming I’ve done the math correctly, TMadison25 wins only if the final is Tennessee over Duke. Every other possible scenario gives it to rook34. Link is here, will be updated with today’s results shortly.
