With the injuries, and exhaustion...

I thought today was to be Thermopylae: the worn down team would courageously hang in there before being overrun by hoards of orange-clad volunteers.

Instead they gritted out yet another victory. Unbelievable. On to Indy!

You are the Michigan State Spartans and Tom Izzo, even Rodney Dangerfield is disgusted with the lack of respect!

KL2 will have a week to recover and by then he will be an experienced 40 minute PG ;P

this tournament games have not been good for my heart conditions… but I don’t mind it.

I thought I would be happy with sweet 16 in the beginning of the tournament, and this is just overwhelming….

Izzo for President

And half the team for his cabinet. As if there’s any reason to justify his greatness, it ceases to amaze me how much he can do to disrupt an opponent’s strengths on such a short time frame, with so little. Heart >>> physical, when it comes to resources.

It's going to be a good night.

Congrats, y'all

Pretty devastated right now, but it was a great game. Good luck the rest of the way, I’d like to claim that we lost to the National Champs.

Tomorrow will be fun!

I flew down today, just managed to catch the 2nd half (almost changed my ticket) and tomorrow will be teaching in Chattanooga at the new VW plant. Trying to come up with a gracious opening line…..5th trip this year and I was born in Tenn, so they don’t think of me as all Yankee.

bracket foolishness

I’m so pissed at myself – normally I always pick MSU to go the distance, but this year, I didn’t think there was any way we’d get thru Kansas and OSU…. little did I know we wouldn’t have to, and on top of it all, we’d do it without Lucas!

by my2fish on Mar 28, 2010 3:56 PM CDT reply actions

I picked WVU, Michigan State, Baylor, and Butler to the Final Four

And I’ve got MSU over WVU in the finals.

I’m waaaaay too biased, but since I’m an MSU alum, it works out well for me. Every year!

I try not to homer it too much

Doubles the gut punch when you lose. Did have us in the final last year (losing to UNC, naturally), but nowhere near it this time around.

Summers for Midwest Region Most Outstanding Player

Summers was clearly the best player in the midwest region. Don’t go pro, please!

by Granger on Mar 28, 2010 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

God I want Summers to stay

But if he has a decent final four, this may be his best chance ever to be a first rounder. If he’s got a good shot to be a top-20 pick, Izzo will be shoving him out the door.

by theRPS on Mar 28, 2010 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

From what I've heard

He’s a borderline second-rounder right now. With Appling coming in we can afford to lose either Kalin or Durrell, but not both.

by Pete Rossman on Mar 28, 2010 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Is that pre-or-post the last two weeks?

The biggest star of the tournament always seems to get bumped up twenty or thirty spots from where he should be taken. Durrell is on track to be that guy right now.

Would Lucas would even be drafted with the ruptured Achilles?

After the first, but before the second

I don’t know how it’ll alter the talk. I just hope both Kalin and Durrell stay for one more year.

by Pete Rossman on Mar 28, 2010 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't imagine Kalin will leave

With no workouts and a rehabbed Achilles, I can’t imagine anyone would even draft him.

2005 all over again

Lose the first BTT game on poor free throw shooting, then tear through the regional. Let’s hope the comparison ends there and we can switch over to, say, the last time the Final Four was in Indy.

by SpartanDan on Mar 28, 2010 4:15 PM CDT reply actions

One big difference

In 2005, there were two utterly dominant teams in the Final Four. Is there anyone this time around you think we don’t have a puncher’s chance at beating? I don’t.

by LVS on Mar 28, 2010 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I've felt like it was anyone's tournament since last night.

Really, I could have seen Butler, MSU, Tennessee, Duke, Baylor, or West Virginia as National Champions. I’d still say that of the four.

by intrpdtrvlr on Mar 28, 2010 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Although it should be noted that we led at the half against UNC ’05 before the Sean May Elbow Show took over.

One of the biggest ironies of today

Adam Hoge, who writes a Wisconsin blog called Bucky’s 5th Quarter for SBNation, will be going to Las Vegas as part of the Last Fan Standing contest because he was assigned MSU.

Now may he never speak ill of Izzo again.

by Pete Rossman on Mar 28, 2010 5:18 PM CDT reply actions

Harrumph

That guy dissed me in the post-game thread to the Wisconsin loss and didn’t have the courtesy to respond. I guess there’s some irony here but I’d prefer the trip was to Milwaukee or Eau Claire. . .

But thrilled to see what MSU did. What an accomplishment.

Perhaps this other classic dance video more accurately captures the rollercoaster you’ve had throughout this year. A victory like this deserves more than one video.

cute article! But...

it really indicates that sports outcomes are not really throws of the dice. Yes, we can identify the frequency with which 1 seeds, 2 seeds, and so on make the Final Four, but each of those teams that made it had its own story – and each that didn’t, as well. Tom Izzo is clearly one of the greatest tournament coaches of all time – maybe the best, and the odds of an Izzo team making the Final Four are far better than that of any particular equally-seeded team. Why? Now, that’s the really interesting question!

by nothsa on Mar 28, 2010 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Vol fan here

Congrats to the Spartans. You guys played well and deserved to win a great game. Tom Izzo is a great coach, maybe the best in the country. Good luck in the Final Four.

Well, we got bounced in the same round, but it was nice to be alive a day longer. And at least the Vols won’t be vacating our tournament wins…
