Trey Zeigler to play college basketball at CMU
The Morning Sun is citing sources close to the CMU situation. Zeigler will choose to play for his father at Central over U-M, MSU, et al.
This has been a strange situation for the last few months, as Michigan State hasn't had a scholarship spot open for Zeigler, but remained on his list, presumably to leave the option if a spot opened up and he decided MSU was the right destination. (We still don't know what Tom Herzog's status is for the next season.)
Anyway, it's over now. On to the 2011 class.
Best of luck to Mr. Zeigler as a Chippewa. As a basketball fan who lives in Michigan, it'll be nice to have a specific reason to follow MAC hoops action.

Be like Hayward.
I agree. I am a State student who grew up in Mount Pleasant and obviously around CMU. It would be really cool to see the Chips do something in basketball.

One and Done
While I know it isn’t Izzo’s style, if there is a scholarship available this year, it might be intriguing to try to land a one-and-done player who coud provide some insurance and impetus for another Final Four appearance. Other than having to wait for the late signing period in 2011 to fill that scholarship, I don’t see much downside. This would seem to be the year to do it. With a terrific core of returning players, a top-flight recruit would find the Spartans a good bet to make a run deep into the tournament. I don’t follow recruiting close enough to know who is out there, but I’ll bet there is someone who could fit into the system and make a difference.
As a friend...
of Tom Herzog he most likely isnt coming back so we should have another scholarship open up

At this point
I bet that scholarship is used for someone like Big Daddy Thornton or Mike Kebler in 2010.
I think that would be well earned
I would happy to see those guys rewarded for their senior years (not sure about eligibility status, but I think both guys are entering their 4th years). Plus, might as bank one for a thorough search on a 2011 prospect, than a haphazard move on a 2010 last minute guy that will eat up the scholarship for another 4 years.
Both are on scholarship this year, I think
We only had 11 standard scholarship players on the roster this season.
I’d think Thornton would keep his scholarship for another year—since he was the preferred walk-on and has seen more regular PT. Kebler may push him to be the top walk-on in the rotation next year, though.

Right about the scholarships
Yeah, that’s right, KJ. I imagine Thornton gets first shot followed by Kebler next year. After those guys’ contributions, I can’t fathom anyone being added for 2010 on scholarship as a freshman. I could be wrong, though, but I have to think Izzo will reward one of those guys or both if he can (transfer?). As DP99 says, they earned it.
And DP, Thornton has another year of eligibility after next. He’ll enter 2010 as a RS Jr. He arrived in the Lucas, Allen, Summers class but redshirted.
This is all assuming Herzog doesn't come back, of course

This is the best case scenario actually (other than him signing with us).
He gets to play with his Dad and possibly be the savior of a “middling” program.
We don’t have to play against him 2x a year like if he’s in Ann Arbor.
We also don’t have to hear it in the national media if he were to perform very well at UCLA or ASU (ie. “The one that got away”).
Just like Jamil Wilson…if a kid looks at all that Coach Izzo and our program has accomplished and doesn’t want to be a part of it…so be it. I don’t quite understand it, but everybody’s different.
Good luck, Mr. Ziegler.
Best of luck to Ziegler
Kinda happy he ended up at CMU.
There are other guys Id rather see us go after in the 11 and 12 classes.

Go Spartans
Ray McCallum to Detroit
To the surprise of nobody. He, like Zeigler, will play for his dad. And the early entrants to the draft keep rolling in. Now Gordon Hayward is in, but also without an agent. Fear of a lockout must be fueling this: I can’t remember anything like it before.
this is insanity
I agree that if you are a player you will be found but then you are talking about scholarships from Duke, UCLA, MSU etc you are severly limiting your career. I’m surely jealous that Troy isn’t going to state, but he would’ve been a one and done. He will have to play 2-3 yrs at a cmu to be a lottery pick… just to play for daddy??

Naw
I don’t think TZ is a one-and-done at all. I’ve never heard anyone suggest it. Most look at him as doing many things well but nothing outstanding. He has good court IQ but needs to work on his shooting amongst other things. I don’t think he’s ready for the NBA in two years no matter where he went. If anything, the sheer spotlight at CMU might up his potential to be a three-year player instead of four.
A lot of State fans would tell you that TZ is a nice player but the alternative prospects in 2011 might be a trade up – not unlike when missing on Jamil Wilson (indirectly) influenced Izzo’s ability to woo Adreian Payne.
It was exciting to think about him coming here but I wouldn’t make Zeigler into something he’s not.
Don't begrudge a man for sticking with his family.
If he is going to stick around for 4 years it makes no difference in the long run whether it is at State or Central. If he’s good enough to play in the NBA, he will be found by scouts. Why not play for his father. It’s admirable.
I don't...
…think the idea of lack of exposure at CMU is even as true as it once was, with elventy billion college basketball games televised, the Internet, etc.
And if Ziegler was looking at it purely as a career move, he’d have to balance higher profile at the above schools versus higher playing time at CMU. I’m not sure how that evens out.
