CONFIRMED: TOM IZZO IS STAYING AT MSU

UPDATE 4, 8:27 PM: The presser starts in just a few minutes.  We'll update as things happen, or you can follow Sean Yuille's liveblog at the new SB Nation Detroit.

UPDATE 3, 7:45 PM: The athletic department's release, with statements from Hollis, Simon, and Izzo, has been posted.  Quote from President Simon:

"Tom's integral role and respect at MSU earned him the right to take the necessary time to reach his decision. Like others, I wanted the good news earlier, but the wait was worth it. Tom did what Tom does best: he devised a rigorous and thorough game plan that put him, his family, and this university in the best position to win. His decision is a winner for all of Team MSU, the state of Michigan, college basketball, and intercollegiate athletics in general."

UPDATE 2, 7:40 PM: The Detroit News has Izzo's full statement:

It's been an agonizing week as I tried to make a decision about a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Izzo said in a statement. "I apologize for the time the process has taken, but sometimes there are opportunities that come about that must be thoroughly examined. I'm no different than any other successful coach in that I've had multiple inquiries before, but this one was uniquely intriguing. There was a lot of information to gather and consider and some of it wasn't easily obtainable. But when making a life decision, I owed it to myself and my family to do my due diligence. From that I never wavered. And I'm pleased to say I am here for life at Michigan State.

Emphasis mine; read his full statement here.  Now we are so happy we do the dance of joy!

UPDATE 1, 7:30 PM: There will be a press conference with Izzo, Mark Hollis, and Lou Anna Simon from the Smith Academic Center at 8:30 tonight, live on the Big Ten Network.  No confirmation on Izzo's decision one way or another, but it's difficult to imagine that he would be announcing his departure from the campus, with the athletic director and university president by his side.

----

Original story:

WILX in Lansing is reporting, as of 6:58 pm this evening, that Tom Izzo has turned down the Cavaliers' offer, and will remain at Michigan State.  Apparently he told the players earlier this evening, and, depending on who you believe, will have a press conference to announce the news either this evening, or tomorrow morning.

Given the mostly-shambolic reporting of the past week, a healthy level of skepticism is probably warranted until we hear/read something concrete from 1) the athletic department, 2) the Cleveland Cavaliers, or 3) Tom Izzo himself.  However, WILX is confident enough in their sources to not hedge at all in their headline: "BREAKING NEWS: Tom Izzo Staying at MSU."  Resolution may be coming soon, and it looks like it might be highly, highly positive news for MSU fans.  Stay with us for updates . . .

Press conference at 8:30

Per Joey Nowak, who was the State News Sports Editor last year. That’s the most legit piece of information I’ve heard all day, so we’ll see.

by Pete Rossman on Jun 15, 2010 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

Not enough time

they promised to give 2.5 hours notice to news crews so the Detroit media could be present. I am still skeptical

by kingma10 on Jun 15, 2010 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Nowak's trustworthy.

Also been confirmed by The State News.

by LVS on Jun 15, 2010 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, and also confirmed by Brent Yarina of the Big Ten Network.

Izzo, Hollis, and Lou Anna Simon will be there. This is looking really good.

Here's part of the release

@joeynowak

Athletic Dept. has issued a release. Izzo: “I’m pleased to say I am here for life at Michigan State.” #MSU

by Pete Rossman on Jun 15, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

Congrats, guys

I’m a Penn State fan, and though we’ve had our moments against you lately, I know we aren’t comparable programs. But I’ve always admired Izzo, and I’m glad he’s staying—for the sport of college basketball. There aren’t many better coaches, and even fewer who do it the right way like Izzo has and has made his mission. Good for him, and better for you guys.

Somewhere

Lynn Henning is weeping into his maize and blue corn flakes.

by Flying J on Jun 15, 2010 6:47 PM CDT reply actions

Meh.

It was a monumentally stupid column, but Henning’s said plenty of stupid things over the years about Michigan, too.

by LVS on Jun 15, 2010 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it was B10 expansion that clinched it.

Dude simply wanted to play the Huskers. Stuff it, LeBron.

From erstwhile TOC author Rob Visconti:

Just as I read this

The sun came out for the first time all day. No foolin’.

Yes!

Huge relief. The quote about him staying for life at MSU will help ease any worries recruits will have about him jumping to the NBA in the future.

Thankyou Izzo!!!

i have a feeling he prolongued this to bring attention to the program…

"You're in this dark tunnel and you've got no way out, you're waiting for light, and you see that light, what do you do? What do you do? You start digging, and getting out. ... I've always beleived you stay in the tunnel and you keep digging when you expect no light. You have the same faith when you expect no light. You have the same beleif in what you're doing when you expect no light. ... It's dark and I'm going to dig through. by Stones1981 on Jun 15, 2010 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Two things...

Big 10 and the rest of the Div 1 basketball world should be on notice, because Iz and the Boys are in fight mode, and that doesn’t and cannot bode well for any of our opponents.

Second…

Best line of the night:

The guy tells it like it is

Or certainly the way he sees it, and I respect him for that. I think he took care of any worries that his heart won’t be into it. We can look forward to a coach who is ready to bring some more championships to State. I’m looking forward to those LeBron recruits.

by donaldo on Jun 15, 2010 8:58 PM CDT reply actions

Thank you for airing press conference, big ten network!!!!

I have never thought that the press conference would be both exciting (since he is coming back) and suspenseful (thanks to L.Henning).

by MKgreen on Jun 15, 2010 9:11 PM CDT reply actions

The Only Thing...

That was suspenseful about the Lynn Henning portion, was weather or not Coach was going to leave the podium and beat Henning over the head with the microphone…

Pete's tweet while it was going on:

by LVS on Jun 15, 2010 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Irony

The blanket indictments of the media from Simon/Hollis/Izzo were over the top.

Henning, who decided he’d be the media’s defender, was one of the media members who clearly deserved to be indicted.

I’ll admit I wasn’t sure about hiring a college coach, even Izzo, who would be the best possible one. I feel he’ll be much more appreciated in EL.
