Ain't it (a) grand?
On November 3, 2007, the Michigan football team beat the Michigan State football team 28-24 in Spartan Stadium. Also on that date:
- The Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 13,595.
- Barack Obama trailed Hillary Clinton by 23 percentage points in national polling for the 2008 Democratic primaries.
- Bruce Springsteen had the #1 album on the Billboard 200 charts.
- Bee Movie was the #1 movie at the box office.
- I was just about 3 weeks away from becoming an MSU sports blogger.
In the 1,000 days that have transpired since that date, the following contests have occurred between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University in football and men's basketball (i.e., "sports we care/blog about"):
- January 27, 2008: Michigan State 77, Michigan 62 (Basketball; East Lansing)
- October 25, 2008: Michigan State 35, Michigan 21 (Football; Ann Arbor)
- February 10, 2009: Michigan State 54, Michigan 42 (Basketball; Ann Arbor)
- October 3, 2009: Michigan State 26, Michigan 20 (OT) (Football; East Lansing)
- January 26, 2010: Michigan State 57, Michigan 56 (Basketball: Ann Arbor)
- March 7, 2010: Michigan State 64, Michigan 48 (Basketball; East Lansing)
If you're keeping score at home, that's six victories for MSU. And zero victories for . . . The Victors.
P.S. I thought twice about posting this, as I hate to be seen as a bad winner who's rubbing our in-state rivals' noses in their recent misfortunes. Then I remembered that the rivalry they really care about is the one with Ohio State, so I figured they wouldn't mind.

Nice postscript
Didn’t someone say something after that last M win about their time coming, or something along those lines? Why am getting the urge to scowl just thinking that?
Don't feel bad
We Spartans sure took our years of lumps while the UM fans puffed their chests at us, so turn around is fair play!
i read mgoblog.
it may not be a universal fact for all UM fans, but brian at least spends a lot of time obsessing over MSU, making us emblematic of the anti-UM. he very obviously cares as much about MSU as he does OSU. it seems the entire fanbase does not know how to live in a world in which success for UM is not guaranteed, particularly when accompanied by success at MSU.
You read mgoblog?
My condolences. It’s tough to get through some of those comments without gagging, though it’s always interesting to see the level of delusion there. You’d never know it’s been a thousand days since they beat us at something important.
I guess for the small group of people who read this blog and are interested in Spartan Hockey...
(You know the only other revenue sport on campus)…it hasn’t been 1000 days since they beat us in something important. They bounced us out of the CCHA playoffs and with it any chance at making the NCAA tournament last season.
What a depressing thing to share
But apt. Sparty can still claim bragging rights in the series based on the most recent national title.

The mgoboard
makes the RCMB look like a MENSA meeting, but Brian himself is a good writer.
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
It's really....
…the emblem of about the best a school-specific sports blog can be. Too bad it’s about that school, but I gotta read it because Cook really is excellent.

Bingo
And yes, some of the commenters are nuts, but there’s a pretty solid core of good contributors if you can filter out the noise.
Same here
I’d argue that Brian focuses as much as he does on MSU because Ohio State has been kicking U-Ms ass for quite a while now. It’s like when you can’t beat your rival, at least you can beat your second-place rival.
The only problem is that when your second-place starts to beat you on a regular basis, you really don’t have much of a leg to stand on.

If you're talking Justice Hayes
He just popped to Notre Dame. Not at all surprising given McCall’s commitment a couple days ago.

Yup...
Just saw that literally after I posted.
Any word on Ed Davis? Does he come to MSU and make us Linebacker U Jr.?
Showers...
According to Matt Dorsey:
Showers’ recruiting stock has skyrocketed this spring. He holds offers from all over the country, including Big Ten schools MSU, U-M, Iowa and Wisconsin, as well as Florida and Auburn of the SEC. Showers visited East Lansing with his family and told SpartanMag.com he was able to spend extensive time with the coaching staff to get to know it better. Showers did not say that he has a leading team or a timetable for a decision, but he did say that MSU coach Mark Dantonio and his staff is one of the reasons why he is looking closely at the Spartans.
I understand why you did it.
I just hope we get to the point someday that beating UM on a somewhat regular basis is not anything to stop the presses about.
I’d prefer us to be like Barry Sanders. Score a touchdown, flip the ball to the referee. Act like you been there.
But if this makes you feel better, have at it man!
The Last Time
I think some historical perspective is in order to appreciate that this “1,000 Days” milestone IS, in fact, a pretty big deal. From a review of the football and basketball media guides, the last time this happened for either school was 1975-1978, when MSU went 1,127 days between victories (this was in the midst of an 8-game losing streak to UM in football from ‘70 through ’77). Interestingly, had it not been for the basketball team’s victory in 1975 (thanks Gus!), the drought would have stretched all the way back to 1972 (my condolences to you Spartans who were enrolled during that 6-year stretch).
Since joining the Big 10, MSU has been on the good side of this “1,000 Day” accomplishment only one other time: from 1957 to 1960 (1,090 days), and that stretch included a tie in the 1958 football game.
So, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about in celebrating this today – in the history of the rivalry, it’s only happened a few times and it’s been over 30 years since the last time. Here’s to hoping that it continues.
Good stuff
500 bonus points to you sir.

Es gibt keine Freude wie Schadenfreude
Did I get that right? My German is rusty and I’m considering using this as a new sig. Seems appropriate enough.
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.

No reason to hesitate posting this.
If we win in football this fall we’re looking at a minimum of another year added onto the streak.
Hey now
While there’s no way we should lose to Michigan in basketball … there’s no reason we should have lost to Northwestern and Penn State at the Breslin Center two years ago. There is no such thing as a sure thing in sports.
ssshh
Whatever you do, don’t tell the commenters on the Freep’s site or MLive about this or it will start a flame war that might shut down electricity to the entire Midwest.
Sore losers make bad winners
Congrats on a great 1,000 days. Please don’t stop as I’d like to see us keep winning.
