Blogpoll: Preseason Ballot
Once again, yours truly is privileged and pleased to be a BlogPoll voter; the ballot below is my preseason ranking. Of course, one of the most salient criticisms of the polls that actually matter is that there are preseason polls at all: they're based on flimsy evidence, and they set an artificial baseline for the the rankings going forward. But, our poll doesn't affect anything other than our pride (or lack thereof), so here goes:
The Only Colors Ballot - Week 1

SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings "
Comments/criticisms welcome, with the caveat that I didn't put a ton of effort into putting together this ranking. (How can you spend much time when there's no evidence to use?) Future ballots will be more than an exercise in throwing darts at the wall.

To touch off the debate
I would’ve done a couple things differently:
— Until the existence of Nebraska’s offense is verified, I don’t think they should be any higher than 10th.
— I’d flip Iowa and Wisconsin.
I would also have ranked USC – Yes, they’re not bowl eligible, but I think we can’t ignore them based on that fact, even with their probationary status.
The preseason ballot is always a crapshoot; there’s no right or wrong way to do it.
One more thing – Orson ranked MSU at #16. It looks like he is going to live every week like it’s SARK WEEK.
Retorts!
I think Nebraska’s defense alone makes them the 7th best team in the country. Even without Suh, I think they’re going to be nearly-dominant.
I ranked Iowa and Wisconsin next to each other because it’s awfully difficult picking out the better team of the two at this point. Iowa’s defense vs. Wisconsin’s offense is a push, but I think I like Iowa’s offense slightly more than Wisconsin’s defense.
USC’s 15 in my poll, but I’m tempted to rank them lower because Kiffin is garbage.
PP-TPW.
The Only Colors
Penn State
My first glance through I thought “doesn’t Penn State have too many unanswered questions at qb, and other losses from last year’s team”. But I don’t know if I can think of 25 teams with more talent so I guess youv’e got them in the right place. You could almost say the same about Texas and Florida having some question marks. Of course you know those programs have blue chippers coming in to replace the guys they have lost. It’s asking a lot for first time starting qbs to lead top 5 teams. Then again, I don’t know which teams I would bump above them.
In general I think you’ve done a nice job throwing darts here. We’ll know more in a month.
pre-season pools
Pre-season polls are fine with me as long as you don’t use it as a template for the following week. The whole notion that you can’t drop in the polls unless you lose is baloney – especially in the first half of the season. As you admit, the preseason poll is based on minimal evidence so it should not be used as a guide for future polls but rather as a conversation topic while sipping brews at the Riv.
orson can rate us wherever he wants.
we have to be more careful, or we’re homers. we will have more latitude if we start to prove it on the field.
also, has anyone seen where the NY times quad blog has us ranked? i either missed us deep into the 40s, or we’re in the top 15.
It's deep in the 40s
I can’t remember where, but Pre Snap Read should have the exact number.

thanks.
i guess i shouldn’t be surprised. still, i wonder what constitutes expected improvement. our linebackers are better. our secondary is better (even if it isn’t good). our DL is better. our OL is a question mark, but our skill positions are all better. even our schedule is better. and we move back.
talk is cheap. prove it on the field, huh?
I don't think Boise State is one of the 10 best teams in the country.
Hopefully, VT will prove that in Week 1.
Then VT can have one of those 5-3 7-5 seasons the ACC is so fond of and we’ll hear no more about BSU at the end of the season.
Can't disagree more there
Boise State is returning almost everyone back from a team that went undefeated. And in that undefeated season, they beat the Pac-10 champs and another great unbeaten mid-major. I’d put Boise at 3 or 4.

I'm pullling...
…for a Boise State/Iowa national title game, because it would make ESPN cry the hardest. I’m with Orson Swinde, Go Chaos!

Should have thrown the 25 vote to Michigan
I mean, Spurrier used to throw a 25 vote to Duke every year.
Es gibt keine Freude wie Schadenfreude
That's just another reason
That Spurrier is a total jacka$$.

True but I'm glad he is still in college football
What other coach would say “you can’t spell Citrus without UT”?
so, Jack Allen called...
Said someone said something about an article about him?

He must be very insistent.
If you Fanposted something on him, I bet our benevolent TOC overlords would bump it.
