Recruiting data

And thought it was pretty interesting...
I was unable to locate after a reasonable Google search a historical database of recruiting class rankings by school, but I was able to locate RSCI Hoops, which gives us the consensus class rankings since 1998. Statsheet has further cut these statistics, and here is the best meaningful comparison I could come up with:
| From 1998-2011 Top Ten Recruits By School |
||||
| Team | 1998-2009 | 2010 | 2011* | Totals |
| North Carolina | 13 | 1 | 1 | 15 |
| Duke | 9 | 1 | 0 | 10 |
| Michigan State | 6 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
| Kentucky | 6 | 2 | 3 | 11 |
| UCLA | 5 | 0 | 0 | 5 |
Good To see MSU in the Top 5, And good to see who MSU is getting compared too. ( I still feel like MSU is the little brother at times when trying to compare them to Duke,UNC,kentucky,UCLA)
MSU could drop down out of top 5 by 2013(considering we already are locked through 2012 and don't have a top 10 commit, unless Dawson climbs the rankings a few more spots).
Of course MSU has done great lately, but makes you wonder if u need a few more TOP Talent to get the championship, as was the case in 2000.
(Still no complaints at where we sit now, we still have the top talent.)
A bit more data I looked up:
Top 100 Recruits, last 10 years.
*I removed teams that had duplicates, such as Duke 1999-2008, and Duke 1998-2007
| 1 | Duke | 29 | 1999 | 2008 |
| 2 | Kansas | 28 | 1999 | 2008 |
| 4 | Florida | 27 | 1999 | 2008 |
| 4 | Connecticut | 27 | 1998 | 2006 |
| 6 | North Carolina | 26 | 1998 | 2006 |
| 10 |
Arizona | 25 | 1998 | 2007 |
| 15 | Michigan State | 24 | 1999 | 2008 |
Since 2000 - McDonald's All Americans By College
| Team | Total | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| Duke | 21 | 9.95% |
| North Carolina | 19 | 9.00% |
| Kansas | 11 | 5.21% |
| Texas | 9 | 4.27% |
| Florida | 7 | 3.32% |
| Ohio State | 7 | 3.32% |
| UCLA | 7 | 3.32% |
| Kentucky | 6 | 2.84% |
| Michigan State | 6 | 2.84% |
| Georgia Tech | 6 |
2.84%

Id like to know
who besides Shannon Brown, Jason Richardson, Zack Randolph (and Delvon?) was a top 10 overall recruit? Also, the comparisons arent really meaningful in my opinion because Izzo basically recruits Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Not many recruits from outside that area. The other schools recruit nationally. And if you look at the talent pools of those four states, you will probably find that Izzo (and Ohio State) dominate the cream of the crop.
Ooonst ooonst muthafucka!
Top 10s
Marcus Taylor was a pretty highly regarded recruit.
Tolbert, too, he was def top 10.
Paul Davis may have been that high.
Finally, 3 games & out Brandon Cotton was def top 25, perhaps top 10.
Here you go....
McDonald’s All-Americans since 1999:
Year Player RSCI City State High School
2003 Shannon Brown 3 Maywood IL Proviso East
2003 Brandon Cotton 23 Detroit MI St. Martin De Porres
2002 Paul Davis 7 Rochester MI Rochester
2001 Kelvin Torbert 2 Flint MI Northwestern
2000 Zach Randolph 1 Marion IN Marion High
2000 Marcus Taylor 5 Lansing MI Waverly
1999 Jason Richardson 14 Saginaw MI Hill
danke
wow, Torbert was a bigger bust than i previously thought. Cotton too, although I think had he stayed he wouldve developed into an NBA talent, really foolish and selfish of him to transfer.
Ooonst ooonst muthafucka!
I suppose you are right
But I hate to label torbert that way because he was my favorite player on those teams. Played consistently outstanding defense, rarely complained about anything. He was just rock solid for them.
He was a phenomenal athlete coming out of High school, but I don’t know if he should have been rated as highly as he was. I mean, the guy’s jump shot had to be completely rebuilt from scratch. He came in letting his jump shots go as he was on the way down. It looked rediculous even to the untrained eye. And he’s listed at 6’4" but I used to have a class in the same building at the same time as him so I would see him all the time in the halls and he looked like he was maybe 6’2 1/2" at most.
Anyway, you are probably right, but I always loved KT, and thought he was stuck with some unreasonable expectations that have unfairly contributed to his “bust” label. He had the the unfortunate timing of inheriting both the Jrich comparison as the high flying wing player, and carrying the flint torch. Not fun expectations.
Besides, the kid did make it to an elite 8 and a final four. Not bad for a class that supposedly didn’t fulfill its potential.

Torbert
Here’s a spirited defense of Torbert by Patrick Hayes of the Flint Journal you may have already seen (I think it has been linked here on TOC before).
Criticizing that Charboneau article was shooting fish in a barrel
He took a lot of heat for that article, as well he should have. Just horribly, horribly thought out. The Torbert comparison, plus putting Marcus Taylor, Chris Allen, and Paul Davis in the same boat despite their very different MSU careers and exits was the height of lazy analysis. I signed up for their comment section just to reply to that piece.
