Raymar Morgan to play in Israel

Morgan has signed to play with Maccabi Rishon LeZion, located in central Israel, which is part of Ligat HaAl, the top professional league in Israel.

seems like Raymar has as much potential as any of the MSU players who either fell out of the league or couldn’t quite make it. He has NBA size to go with his athleticism and is a versatile defender. He’s not a primary scoring option but certainly can make some plays. It doesn’t surprise me that he wound up in a high-caliber league and I won’t be shocked if he eventually finds his way to an NBA bench.

It’s very legit competition over there. In 2005 the top team, Maccabi Tel Aviv beat the Toronto Raptors in an exhibition game in Toronto. Last year Omri Casspi became the first Israeli player to make the NBA. Doron Sheffer and Anthony Parker also used the league as a springboard to the NBA. I hope Raymar gets a chance to do the same.

I really enjoyed Raymar’s tenure at MSU, even in its most mercurial moments: if he doesn’t step up as a freshman our NCAA streak is probably over. He’s joining a really good league that is certainly on the radars of those who are scouting for NBA teams. I’ve never been convinced that RM is a particularly elite (in NBA terms), or consistently explosive athlete—the put-back dunk to beat IU aside—and his jump shot is flat and funky, but he really became an outstanding defender. He does a lot of things well, and hopefully will be given a chance to make a team stateside in the future.
