Blogpoll Ballot: Week 2

EUGENE OR - SEPTEMBER 04: Running back Kenjon Barner #24 of the Oregon Ducks is mobbed in the endzone by his teammates after scoring a touchdown in the second quarter of the game against the New Mexico Lobos at Autzen Stadium on September 4 2010 in Eugene Oregon. Barner had 225 total yards and 5 touchdowns as Oregon won the game 72-0. (Photo by Steve Dykes/Getty Images)

Without further ado:

This week's full poll and awards, here.

As always, my ballot is a seat-of-the-pants mixture between resume and power rankings.  Hence, Boise gets the top spot because they had the best win this week; if Alabama beats Penn State this weekend, I'd expect Boise's current ranking to be a one-week-only thing.  TCU makes a similarly big leap by beating Oregon State, a top-25 team.

Elsewhere:

  • Oregon makes a huge jump because, uh, that's what happens when you win 72-0.  Having seen bits and pieces of that game, I think I underrated them at the start of the year.  We'll know more after they play Tennessee this week.
  • VT doesn't lose much ground, and they shouldn't lose much when losing by only three points to the now-#1 team.
  • In retrospect, Texas probably didn't deserve to fall 5 spots, but they looked pretty shaky at times on Saturday.  Florida and USC, conversely, looked awful on Saturday and deserve their respective falls.
  • Very impressed by FSU, Georgia, and Arizona; they were the other big jumps.
  • Michigan slides in at #25.  UConn played terribly but it'd be foolish to think that Michigan didn't have a whole lot to do with that.

So, who impressed/disappointed you in the first weekend?  Did I screw anything up?  (More than I usually do?)

Resume ranking would account for the first two

Pounding cupcakes isn’t all that impressive.

Fresno and ECU up that high, though … absolutely indefensible.

No kidding.

ECU gave up 49 points to freaking Tulsa.

Maybe I'm biased

but I don’t think Michigan is a top 25 team. Denard Robinson was definitely impressive as was their O-line, but I feel like they played the perfect game where everything went right. Their defense is still lousy. Uconn receiver were open all day but they either dropped passes (one on the two yard line) or were missed by their QB. UM fumbled 3 times but they recovered 2 and the other one went out of bounds. The one time Uconn fumbled at the goaline UM recovered it.

A good win on the road at Notre Dame will give them a lot more credibility, but I think they lose that game.

I agree with you

They looked good against what is supposed to be a pretty good UConn team, but we’re talking about a club that won only one Big 10 game last year. They’re certainly looking like they’ll eclipse that mark this year, but I have a hard time seeing them as a top 25 team until they actually beat someone that’s top 25 caliber.

boise state?

maybe I don’t understand the ranking system, but do you really think that Boise State is the #1 team in the country?

by my2fish on Sep 8, 2010 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

After their performance on Monday, yes.

They were ranked very high already, and by winning a de facto road game against a top 10 team, they’ve proven their mettle much more than any other team so far. They’re an easy #1 for me.

by LVS on Sep 8, 2010 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

ok

I didn’t watch their game. I’m prolly just letting my expectations for their weak(er) schedule to give me prejudice against them.

by my2fish on Sep 8, 2010 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

And their schedule means

that there’s virtually no way the end up #1 in my ballot later in the season.
