Around SBN: Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant's Post-Game 5 Outfits

Some updates from Mike DeCourcy: Lucas and Payne are both working their way back on to the court. Sherman missed a month due to foot surgery.

Most interesting bit: Summers missed out on a chance to work with the USA Basketball Select Team due to a knee sprain.

Despite the injury concerns, MSU is #1 in the Sporting News' preseason yearbook. If you buy the TSN book, be sure you have enough money left over to buy the hefty Spartan-centric tome the three of us TOCers are contributing to later this month.

No mention of Byrd or Thornton?

Last I heard, Byrd was limited until at least this month. Is he now a go? I also heard rumbling that AT had damaged his back but no follow up. Weird.

Yes

I thought about Byrd too while reading that. I had forgotten that Sherman had some foot surgery before last season. Probably could expect improved movement out of him and Nix (269!) both.

267 and 229

Best part of the article:
Derrick Nix, a 6-9 center who played last year at 285 after hitting 340 near the end of his high school days, is lean and mean at 267 pounds.

"He’s got good feet and hands, and what he didn’t have is conditioning," Izzo said. "Now he’s got that. And he’s got toughness and strength."

Draymond Green, a versatile 6-6 forward who was a pudgy 235 last season, is at 229 and "looks great," in Izzo’s words.

"He’s done a hell of a job with his body," Izzo said. "If nothing else, we’ve had good body work."

wow.

at 6’0" i used to weight 285. i lost 85 pounds of fat and then gained 12 pounds of muscle. i am really impressed with what nix is doing with his weight. that is really hard to do, and few people actually put it together enough to accomplish that.

I'm really getting encouraged about

Green’s ability to fill the Raymar Morgan role. Raymar was listed at 6’7" – 6’8" and 225 lbs. Green is still a little more stocky but I think he’s dropped enough weight that he may be able to guard on the perimeter adequately. I’d rather not see him out there all the time but given our injury situation and thin backcourt someone that played inside last year is going to have to spend some time on the perimeter.

If Nix can fill in for Green down low then I think we’ll see Green at SF quite a bit of the time – with a starting 5 of Lucas/Lucious/Kebler (depending on how fast Lucas comes along in recovering from his injury and how many games Lucious is suspended for) Summers, Green, Roe and Nix.
