BCS Computer Rankings
Quick question here:
Why do the computers hate us so much? Why are we .8 behind Michigan and further behind every other team thats remotely close to us. I understand that the computers hate the Big Ten, but our schedule was harder than UM and we beat them... how does that make any sense?

My guess:
Our non-conference was pure crap. We have one good team (Notre Dame, who’s shared with Michigan) and three utter abominations (a 1-AA team, a bad Central Michigan team, and an unbelievably awful FAU team). Michigan’s cupcakes were respectable. Big XII teams only have three non-con games this year, and the conference as a whole did so well in those games that it’s boosted them all.
I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.
Bradley-Terry rankings for college football and basketball: because there aren't enough computer rankings already.
Don't forget Indiana
and we’ve played 3 of the 10 worst FBS teams in the country. MIght as well assume we’re really just 6-2 as far as the computers go. (Minnesota only marginally better than those first 3). Loss to ND hurts more every week.
This is the correct answer
Michigan’s non-con this year (and next) is impressive. 3 bowl eligible teams and 6-win Eastern, who isn’t bowl eligible due to two 1-AA wins, but it’s still 6 Win Eastern Michigan.
The Ohio State victory looks less impressive as the Buckeyes’ swoon continues.

It could be worse
We could be Wisconsin: 23 in two polls, unranked (outside the Top 25) in two others.
The computers are wacky. Massey, for example, is totally nuts. Kansas State #5? Baylor #7?!?!?
I think we should start a petition to replace Kenneth Massey with the BlogPoll. I mean, the BCS could probably be convinced that the BlogPoll comes out of the computerbox, therefore it’s a “computer poll”.
No, no
Replace with Massey with Bradley-Terry!
Although Dan’s rankings aren’t any kinder to us at the moment. End of the day, we have the same record as Michigan against comparable schedules. The win over Wisconsin is being offset by weaker nonconf opponents, I guess.
Anyway, I’ll take the head-to-head win and the BTCG slot. BCS ranking doesn’t really matter to us at this point.
Wisconsin suffers because the computers aren’t allowed to use margin of victory.

Oops
Was looking at margin-aware rankings. As of last week, Dan’s basic rankings (which would meet the BCS requirement not to use margin of victory) had us two slots ahead of Michigan. I assume they’ll probably flip this week given the disparate levels of competition this past week.

Computer Consensus
Is that the Big 12 is the best conference so far this year.

With good reason.
A full list of their non-conference losses: Arkansas (over Texas A&M), Arizona State (over Missouri), Georgia Tech (over Kansas). That’s it.
