2013 PG Target Demetrius Jackson to Decide Soon
Demetrius Jackson, a 2013 Mishawaka point guard, stated on his own (public) twitter account that he has moved up his decision timetable unexpectedly and then later confirmed to others that he plans on making a decision by or during Christmas Break. For Michigan State, it appears to be Jackson or bust at point guard for 2013. Prospects such as Jalen James and Derrick Walton are headed to opposing Big Ten schools while other in-state players like Monte Morris and Denzel Watts are not receiving significant interest from MSU. Even though Dowagiac G Dontel Highsmith has been destroying the competition, he stills appears to be a darkhorse to garner an MSU offer.
Jackson's sudden announcement suggests that something has happened to change his recruitment. Earlier this month, he stated no intention to rush things and wanted to take his time. It's not crystal clear who has given Demetrius committable offers but it appears that Notre Dame, Butler, MSU, and possibly Indiana are the leaders vying for his services. He would be a curious fit for Michigan State. The 2013 roster may already have a senior Keith Appling, a junior Trice, and sophomore Denzel Valentine. Looking beyond, Michigan State has been heavily pursuing elite 2014 PG Tyus Jones of Minnesota. There are currently only two open scholarship spots for 2013 with the possibility of one more being available due to attrition. With one almost definitely reserved for Jabari Parker and the academic waiting-game on James Young, accepting a commitment from Jackson would pack the house a bit and fill a position that isn't a need. Recently, ND's Mike Brey was in to watch Demetrius and this smells like a Fighting Irish commitment to me but that's just a guess.
On the flip, Jackson has been someone who gets more and more praise as his game develops and might end up a solid college talent. There are definitely opinions out there preferring him to the other PGs I've previously mentioned. In the name of brevity and spreading the blog love, Indiana's InsidetheHall has a nice recruit page on Jackson and has collected the numerous videos of him in action. You can judge for yourself how he'd look in Green & White.

Interesting
I think you laid out the case nicely as to why Jackson would not be coming to MSU.
With so much high level talent out there for 2013 / 14 and our current tight scholarship situation I’m not sure adding another pg helps our team get better.
Good luck to him wherever he's going
Really just want to say I’m glad our freshman are sticking with the program and working to get better which leads to more PT.
Seems like there’s a rash of high ranked freshman leaving schools this season.
Looks like Pitt is losing a kid that was actually starting.
Kind of brings to light reasons why Coach Izzo might back away from a kid.
I think the coaches added some really good people as well as players this season.
"Brick killed a guy! Did you throw a trident?"
Yeah we don't need this guy
Tyus Jones is a much higher priority and I’d be willing to gamble on him and Okafor over this guy. He’s not a big loss. Also is there any news on the progression of our big recruiting targets, i.e. Jabari Parker, Jones, Okafor, Drake Harris (who seems more and more like a longshot in comparison to the first three since James Young seems to have a similar skillset and we’re absolutely loaded on the wing for a while)?
Hmm
Well, sure, if Izzo signs 3 guys in the national top 5 of their class (Parker, Okafor, Jones) or maybe settles for a guy who’s only top 10 (James Young) he doesn’t need Jackson. But not even Calipari can count on classes like that. MSU could do a lot worse than Demetrius Jackson.
Wow that would be amazing to get three top 5 recruits in one class
But I don’t see it happening – just doesn’t fit the normal Izzo pattern, and seems to me like it would be an absolute best possible case scenario.
With that being said, knowing how laser focused Izzo is on getting that second NT while he’s coach, I wouldn’t put anything past him. And at least those guys you mentioned are all midwestern recruits, which obviously is where Izzo focuses his efforts.
