MSU's Big 10 Dominance at Breslin

Disclaimer: I had been meaning to post this before Big 10 play started, but didn't finish compiling everything until yesterday, the day of the IU game. Given MSU's crazy long streak against IU at Breslin, I didn't want to take any chances of jinxing it, so I thought it would be better to hold off a day. I think we can all agree that was the sound, logical thing to do.

Since the Breslin Center opened for the 1989-90 season, MSU has been, how you say, really good. From winning a Big 10 title in the building's first year to the four-year run of dominance in the Flintstone era to the back-to-back titles in '09 and '10, "The Bres" has been home to a glorious age of MSU establishing itself as a conference powerhouse.

It is widely known that MSU enjoys great success at home, as evidenced by such things as the 53-game winning streak from 1998 to 2002 (incidentally, that winning streak started with the first game of my freshman year in the Izzone, meaning we didn't lose a home game until the second semester of my senior year). Now that we've got 22 full seasons under our belt in the arena, I thought it would be interesting to see just how successful MSU has been against conference opponents at Breslin since its opening. I've also broken it down to show Izzo's record separately. Some bullets before the team-by-team breakdowns:

  • An amazing .825 winning% for all conference games at Breslin
  • An even amazinger .852 winning% under Izzo
  • Only 1 losing record in conference play (4-5 in 1992-93, an NIT year)
  • Since 1996-97, MSU has not lost more than 2 conference games at home in a season
  • Izzo has only lost 20 conference home games in 16 seasons

* In the 1996-97 season, MSU played 19 games against Big 10 opponents instead of 18. From what I can tell, MSU was only scheduled to play Michigan once (in Ann Arbor), so they scheduled a home game that did not count toward the conference record (Michigan won 74-61). I included it here for the sake of completeness, but technically, MSU's conference record at home against Michigan is 14-5. It should probably also be pointed out (because I enjoy doing so) that Michigan's wins in 1993, 1996, and 1997 were vacated by the NCAA (fun fact: the 26 regular season wins vacated from the 1993 season are the most to ever be vacated for any program in one season). My understanding is that we don't get to vacate our losses, but they don't get credit for the wins. So there. Cheaters.

Good stuff

How much work would it be to dig up similar snapshots for other B1G venues?

Tonight's going to be a good night.

Depends

For newer arenas, not that much. For places like Williams Arena in Minny or Assembly Hall in Bloomington… a LOT more. I thought about doing comparisons to Kohl Center and a couple others, but I also wanted to get this up before 2012.

Awesome work

I nominate this one as “Fan Post of the Year.”

The only thing that is missing is some colorful chart/graph that puts our team’s awesomeness in picture form.

That loss to M at the Bres really, really sucked last year – I would trade any of last season’s wins, save for the B1G Tourney victory over Purdue, for that one.

That '09 season was something huh?

Going into the season we hadn’t lost to NU at home in 25 years and hadn’t ever lost to PSU at home. Then we lost to both at home just over a week apart. Who would have thought that this could happen in a season that we won the B1G title and played for the NC?

Completely bizarre

Consider this: not only had we beaten Northwestern 16 straight times at Breslin, the last 14 of those were BY DOUBLE DIGITS, before that ’09 loss. The closest game before then had been a 7-point win in ’91. We absolutely OWNED Northwestern in Breslin until then. And pretty much the same with PSU. A freak occurrence if there ever was one.

They were looking ahead

likely didn’t take those games all that seriously, or were focused on the next big oppenent that was coming up. Let’s not let that happen his Saturday against Nebraska.

And Battle did pretty much the same for PSU.

If you had told me we would have our first-ever losses at Breslin to both Northwestern and Penn State and win the conference by four games in the same year, I would have wondered what you were smoking.

I've got this terrible pain in all the diodes down my left-hand side.

Bres vs. Kohl

Kohl Center (MSU’s personal house of horrors) opened for the 1998-99 season and seems to be most commonly referenced as the toughest place to play in the conference. I’m pretty sure I heard that Bo Ryan’s record there is 900-1. However, here’s a comparison of Wisconsin and MSU’s conference records at home since the Kohl Center opened:

Wisconsin (home conference games): 96-12 (.889)
MSU (home conference games): 95-13 (.880)

That’s actually a lot closer than I expected it. Without looking at all the other schools, I doubt any come close to those records over the same time span.

Wow, just a game behind

Definitely closer than I would’ve guessed, too.

Tonight's going to be a good night.

Chance to pull ahead!

With Iowa’s win in Madison, that means that MSU could actually move ahead of Wisconsin in home conference record since the opening of the Kohl Center with a win tonight. Of course that’s like saying MSU could end its five-game bowl losing streak by beating a 10-3 SEC team like Georg—- oh, wait.

Kohl Center

In the Kohl Centers defense it did have to make up for the lack of talent on the court compared to what the Brez has been hosting on its court.

Really good read

Purdue has the best record at 69%? That is truly remarkable.

The Bres is a terrific college bball venue

Truly terrific. In my opinion it does not get the credit it deserves for its college sports atmosphere. Some of that is due to the “wonderful” sports media in the state of Michigan. However some of that is due to MSU fans. We need to thump our chests a little more about who we are and what we have. Modesty is nice, but needs moderation.

So with our next win at home against Iowa we could tie UW for the best conference home record since 1998-99?

The Breslin is known for it’s home court advantage…do you think announcers will say anything about this against Iowa?

by MSULaxer27 on Jan 3, 2012 9:15 PM CST reply actions

Correct

IF we beat Iowa, we will be a game up on Kohl. Right now we have a half-game lead (same number of wins, they have 1 more loss). In fairness, though, I haven’t actually run the numbers on all other teams. I just can’t imagine anyone else coming close over that same period of time. At the end of the year, I’ll try to get a breakdown of each school’s home record.

That was heading into this season

So add 1 win for us and 2 losses for them.

And there you have it

Breslin: 97-13
Kohl: 96-14

I won’t be making any more updates until the season’s over, but I thought this was worth mentioning now.

The win over Iowa was also the largest margin of victory against them in Breslin and extended our home winning streak against them to 17. It’s also the 3rd time since 2006 that we’ve beaten them by 30 at Breslin.
