The Michigan State women's team lost last night to Ohio State, but thanks to our good friends from West Lafayette beating Penn State, won the outright Big 10 title.
Per the official site, this was the first outright regular season title for the Spartans and the third overall after sharing titles 1997 and 2005.According to the LSJ, the team found out about the Purdue-PSU score while they were still on the floor celebrating the seniors—Kalisha Keane, Brittney Thomas, Cetera (Go, Kzoo) Washington and Jasmine Holmes—so they got to celebrate the title on the floor.
The endgame was irksome in that point guard Brittney Thomas fouled out on a missed call. I don't watch enough of the women's game to know if Samantha Prahalis always gets the....err benefit of the doubt, but she decided to bellyflop into the lane searching for contact and while Thomas didn't touch her, the refs decided it looked enough like she'd been tripped that they called it. On replay if was crystal clear she hadn't been touched. Prahalis soon fouled out herself on the play where Kalisha Keane (who was playing with four newly-aquired stiches) tied the game. (Prahalis apparently then treated the Breslin Center to some sort of display upon fouling out that was enough to be commented on by the announcers, but weirdly not shown on BTN.)
Without B. Thomas, Jasmine Thomas took over the point and was really bothered coming up the floor with 10 seconds left and missed a contested jump at the buzzer.
Thanks ladies and hooray for banners!
